Car insurance question

I am currently shopping around for car insurance quotes, as my current policy ends next month.

I have spoken with someone this morning who works for a car insurance provider, and they asked me how many years' no claims bonus I had.

I advised that I have been driving for x number of years, have never claimed, so therefore I have the same number of years no claims bonus.

'It doesn't work like that', I was informed. 'Some car insurance companies cap no claims bonus at a certain level'. 'You need to check your renewal documents from your car insurance', she said.

I checked my renewal documents, and sure enough, the number of years' no claims discount is 6 years less than I have been driving for.

How does this work, and how is it fair?

To be honest if it’s around 9 years or so you wouldn’t get any more discount for 20 years etc. Mine always says 9 years but I have 35 years without a claim.

Some places cap it at 9 years I think. Tends to not make a difference on your renewal price above that amount anyway. Don't think you're missing out on anything.

How come you haven't noticed until now? You must get asked the same question every year

Not if he hasn't changed provider, for instance.

My insurers down the years have capped it at at 9 years, despite 51 years without a claim
that was my fault.

I've not had to change providers for many years, as my current provider have always been very competitive. Not so this year.

Ah, thanks. I didn't know that!
