Luck!

Post by Terrier » Sun Oct 03, 2021 6:10 pm

I realise many will see this as an excuse but if we had lost cornet against man city i doubt it would matter as we will lose anyway but i really think he
would have made the difference v norwich.
We did not deserve to get beat with brighton after hitting woodwork twice.
Leeds very late ( lucky ) equalizer.
Deserved a draw v Arsenal after being the better team
And wood was very unlucky not to get the winner late on against leicester

They say luck evens out through the season, hopefully it will but not until after our next league game as luck will not help us with that one!

4 wins out of 27 games and one win at home since January I have read on here. That’s nothing to do with luck.

In the past 4 or 5 years we've been the masters at hanging on to a draw or a one goal lead and pinching a win when we've spent most of the game on the back foot.

Quite rightly we have laughed off other fans claims we are lucky and instead we have proudly recognised that dogged defending and taking your chances is just as much part of playing well as dominating the ball and creating chances.

I therefore suggest we haven't been unlucky but we have just been beaten or held to a draw by teams who have been more dogged in defence and more clinical in attack.

Dont get me wrong playing good football and looking easy on the eye is great to see as a supporter but if we arent good enough to covert it into points then it counts for nothing

There is an element ofluck involved in our plight, no dobt as everything that can go wrong seems to be doing at the minute.
Our losing leads and failing to win has been because we are not strong ehough to be able to add to our lead or defend it .
It's not through lack of effort or poor play as some of our Rovers-wannabees might argue, it's a midfield, particularly, that becomes overwhelmed very quickly.
We even saw it yesterday against pitiful opposition.

Agree, midfield is shocking and Dyche is so rigid he won't or can't figure out how to play a 5 either to start a game with or make a tactical change to protect a point or lead.

Usually reliable players like Pope, Taylor, Westwood and Wood are all in poor form at the same time.

We do well in the first fifty or sixty minutes - it;s then when the opposing manager's tweaks begin to take effect and, as pointed out above, we can't react.
Cornet will, hopefully, ease some pressure by getting the attack fired uo but we can't continue to try to rely on a tiring, outnumbered midfield to protect us.
We're playing well but the system is demanding too much over 90 minutes. It's making our better players seem ordinary at best. They're not.

Talking of luck, that cross by Norwich late in the game that clipped the bar could have gone in . Instead we are still two points ahead of them rather than bottom of the PL with just 2 points. We tend to remember the luck we didn't get when attacking, rather than the bad luck our opponents got

It’s nothing to do with luck or “having no plan b”.

Since January we’ve been trying to evolve our style to be more attacking and attractive to watch, but we’re constantly on the wrong side of results, arguably because we don’t have the quality to play that way. Better teams can let us come on to them, then pick us off.

We’re in no mans land; neither defensively solid or good/clinical enough to capitalise on good attacking play. We either need to dramatically improve in the oppositions box or quickly revert back to our more rigid, “keep it tight and nick a goal” approach.

I’m very worried that we’re watching history repeat itself from when Stoke tried to evolve their style - they failed & went down.

My only hopes are a) Cornet, who could be the quality we need to tip the balance, and b) the January window, where hopefully Pace has plans to add to our quality.

So I’d stick with it for now, but if results don’t improve by January we need to revert back. Sadly.

Will add a further point to the above. By stuck in no mans land, I also mean that we’re not prepared to really commit to the new style. We get in to decent positions, but instead of overloading and really trying to cut teams open, we opt to keep in shape and put speculative crosses in. If we are going to do this, we can’t be half-hearted about it - we need to fully commit and see where it takes us.

We certainly haven't had much luck in the games so far
and we can debate whether we should have a few more points on the board.
But I'm thinking we're going to need at least one or two players in January
to make a difference to our chances of staying up.
Even more so if we're likely to lose Cornet and Wood to their international commitments
in January. Possibly Dyche is going to have be more flexible in his formations as well.

There's no doubt that whilst we haven't played particularly well, we have often played worse in the past and picked up points, we have been rather unlucky so far.
We hit the woodwork 4 times in the first 2 home games, and had 2 very marginal VARs go against us against Arsenal and Leicester. Correct decisions but "fine margins" as Dyche often says, and tbf the penalty against Arsenal wasn't a "clear and obvious" error so should probably have stood.
We played yesterday without our "star" player who had scored a wonder goal at Leicester, and we also lost Vydra to injury in both our last 2 games.
Yesterday we were on the wrong side of just about the worst refereeing display we've witnessed in the PL.
Whilst we didn't play well, Friend had a massive role in this, not just in his failure to award us a penalty and red card Krul, but by penalising us virtually every time we went for the ball, and only awarding 3 fouls against Norwich all afternoon. No wonder they grew in confidence in the 2nd half: half our team were on yellows, so had to tread carefully, and Norwich knew that if there was any physical contact at all they would get a free-kick.
We were also unfortunate yesterday in that VAR let us down. Two different officials yesterday and it could have been rather a different game.
We must make our own luck though.
