I've just text my nephew and asked him if he remembers what I said after beating Ipswich in a midweek league game some years ago, that was the first time I'd seen Tripps I was amazed I said firstly 'he's too good for us' and then told him 'he'll captain England one day'. I'm so pleased for him.

The boy done good, has battled back since his rejection by City and has had an outstanding career. A credit to many including Burnley FC and seems a decent lad as well.

So Trippier being captain, great achievement, means Kane isn't playing, is Bamford the other striker in this squad or was there someone else?

No surprise Kane isn't being risked especially with the plastic pitch.

And let's be honest England should still win comfortably even without Kane leading the line.

I just saw this news on football focus. He may not have been our player for a good while now, but it’s still something to be really proud of.

I’m really pleased for him - alongside being a great player and professional, he always comes across as a bloody good person.

A big congratulations to him.

Couldn't find a player who played for Burnley captain England at the same time.

But ex-players I saw we have, Trippier, Gary Cahill & Joe Hart.

I would absolutely love it Tripps came back even if just for one season.

Trippier definitely has held the armband before, even if only for parts of matches, not sure about the other 2, but you may well be correct.

Michael Keane is another who came to my mind. But I'm not 100% on him.

Tarks I don't remember ever having captained England during his international appearances.

There could well be some in the dim and distant past, however if there was it's long before most people will be aware of.

I think the Saudis might be aiming a bit higher than Tripps.

He was fabulous for Burnley. Really pleased for the lad.

That's because he can't imagine himself launching a 94th minute corner 13 minutes after time to have one of their french superstars handball it over the line to beat us.

We moan that our players today don't really get the recognition they deserve, looks like thats been forever.
With the question of england captaincy in mind i read up on jimmy adamson, footballer of the year 1962 and yet never made the full england team!!

Some will say not but I agree, and accuse us of tinted spectacles; but yes it’s always happened. It used to be a practicality… on the doorstep in the eye of London; your seen more regularly and the Lancashire big city giants. Interestingly, watch Brian Moore’s Big Match… completely representative of the attitude. Centred on London teams… Northern games are usually a London club away at a northern ground, or tasty looking big city derbies. Not much has changed in attitudes, it is partly why clubs like Charlton and Brighton, and indeed southerners generally have no real love for anything Northern (until they visit)… we don’t exist except where we impact on their lives with football, socialism and comedy.

Granada started showing football highlights on Sunday afternoons in the late 60's. I think Barry Davies hosted at the outset of the new show and was followed as host by Gerald Sinstadt who went on to do it for many years if my memory serves me correctly.

I think the programme was originally just called "Football" and showed highlights of north west teams.
Burnley fans' friend Elton Welsby took over as host at some stage, I seem to think that he started on Friday evenings with the "Kick Off" programme.

Could very easily end up at Newcastle soon...

If I remember ITV got the Saturday night slot with the Big Match at MotD’s expense, and Granda showed Kick off on Sunday afternoon (after church)
