Quite frankly, if the rules deem that goal to be onside, then the rules are just wrong

I assumed he had to be onside from this because frame, but if the decision was made because Garcia (i've since learned his name ) made contact with the ball in trying to prevent it reaching Mbappe then that's a bullshit ruling or rule.

I've been reading the relevant rules on the BBC live text. I think they are poorly worded, but I think if you read them literally, then it was actually offside. Mbappe received the ball from Hernandez's pass. The Garcia touch is irrelevant, because it was still Hernandez's pass that led to Mbappe receiving the ball.

Indeed. And it was a pass that was clearly intended for Mbappe too, which i believe is important.

I'm baffled how the VAR team can see it as onside.

The entire of football is baffling me at the moment. It used to be such a simple game...

There were also 4 offsides not given in this game that led to corners. The first was Benzema in the 6th minute and then another around the 20th minute when Simon just about managed to put the ball out for a corner but two players involved in the build up were offside and not flagged.
I didn't bother with the second half because the first half was a bore fest.

"a player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball... is not considered to have gained an advantage".
The defender deliberately played the ball, so he was onside.

How can they deem that to be onside?
Has nothing to do with the defender deliberately playing the ball or not, if you couldn’t be offside when the opposition player attempts to play the ball then you could never be offside when the keeper makes a save. That is offside. And it isn’t even close. You don’t need lines to see that and they have still got it wrong. When that is deemed onside but Chris wood the other week against Leicester was offside the. You have to winder what is actually going on in football. Something isn’t right.

I agree this confuses things. But the rules also say "A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate". It makes the rules almost contradict each other. But Mbappe was in an offside position. He touched the ball. It was passed to him by a team mate. Even though Garcia touched it too, the ball was still passed to Mbappe.

Either way, if the official interpretation is that its onside, then thats a joke

He's obviously "interfering with play" because he's making a play towards the ball which causes the defender to have to also make a play on the ball. But apparently because the defender makes a play on the ball the player causing him to do that is now onside? What the ****?

Yep, the more I read the rules, the more I think this paragraph is deliberate, and last night's goal was allowed by design. There are some interesting bits at the end of the offside rule which also make no sense. If you foul a player who is in an offside position as they are about to touch the ball, then it's offside. But if you found them just before this, then it's a foul. And probably a red card or a penalty. So if Garcia had left the ball. Offside. If he'd fouled him early before he'd touched it. Onside. But if he'd fouled him later. Offside. If he'd touched the ball, but waited to do that until Mbappe was about to touch it. Offside. It ridiculous

Very strange rule and think they need changing as that should have been flagged. I was very surprised when they checked and didn't chalk it off and was all ready for 30 more minutes.

Chris Wood would score loads, of that was onside!!!

It highlighted for me that you can pass and dance with the ball all match, however, if no one has that killer instinct, you won't score!

I think it was allowed to stand because the current laws make it clear the attacker in this scenario (i.e. where the defender deliberately plays the ball) is not deemed offside. It was therefore the correct decision.

Offside, and by a country mile.

Correct decision by law but it really does highlight a law that needs changing.

Great finish in fairness offside or not.
