England - Hungary

Hoping Foden gets another chance against stronger opposition, but looking like he's going to miss out.
It's Hungary, not France, so I don't think we need both Henderson and Rice. I'd go with a midfield-attack of:
Henderson
Foden Mount
Sterling Kane Grealish

Gutted if Foden doesn’t make it. He is truly a top top player

I didn't realise that Kane is 1 goal away from Rooney's record in competitive England games - and also 1 goal away from Rooney's World Cup scoring record (according to a post on social media anyway)
Competitive Games (games played/scored)
Rooney 74 - 37
Kane 53 - 36
World Cup Games
Rooney 17 - 17
Kane 16 - 16

Pickford in goal.
Kane up front
The rest is fill in the blanks.

Given Southgate's tendency to play 2 holding midfielders against anyone stronger than the Morris Dancers 2nd 11, I think there's every chance that we'll see Henderson and Rice in front of a back four. The only question is how many right backs he'll manage to squeeze into the team.

England: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Mings, Shaw; Rice, Foden; Sterling, Mount, Grealish; Kane.

I reckon Id take Paul Merson's betting tips over yours.

Like that team! Looking forward to watching Foden again. Just an Alexander Arnold & Maguire off a very strong side there.

What a ridiculous penalty for headbutting a foot.

Luke Shaw has only himself to blame for having his foot so high, especially in the box.

Not too long ago that isn't even a foul.
Also, how long has 'fouls suffered' been a caption? I've never noticed that one before.

Sadly pens are given for this now but I agree with you, it’s ridiculous.

In today’s rules (which I really don’t agree with, by the way) that is a penalty.

Half hour in we have been awful and struggling badly to break them down and create a chance.

He was clearing the ball, which he did. I'm not sure what else he was supposed to do.

Except the one where a one two between grealish and Shaw led to a cross and last ditch clearance from the defender.

I’m too busy laughing at our hilariously soft riot police getting absolutely battered by a few Hungarians with bare fists . What on earth were the police going in with batons because the Hungarians booed the knee. Preposterous overreaction

The mistake Shaw made was not being the goalkeeper. Apparently they can virtually take a player’s head off without it being a penalty.

Because if you boo the knee, it is nasty and evil and you are going to hell. Obey the narrative....or else....

I’d take Kane off and play somebody up front that wants to play up front
The lack of the out ball is allowing them to hold their shape man for man
Possibly Sterling central play a few balls over the top and gaps will appear between their lines
Cue a Harry Kane Hat trick

I wouldn't be too surprised if it wasn't their own police that have travelled with them. It's most
unlike our lot to wade in with batons at, what seemed to be, the first sign of unrest.

Good point actually , though football does tend to give the old bill carte blanche

Or if you racially abuse a steward which is what one of the Hungary fans was arrested for. Still you keep getting your knickers in a twist about football players taking the knee if it helps you cope.

This is Southgate’s issue, he’s tactically poor and very slow to change.

Sterling was totally ineffective in the first half hour, but that was obvious after 10minutes, if we’d put him central to make runs over the top Kane may have got space in behind his runs and if their defence started dropping deep our midfield may have got men over and space.

Foden the one person with any creativity. About a dozen dangerous balls in, rest of team less than half a dozen between them.
Rice = backwards (at least Henderson goes forward)
Mount + what does he do?

Fair play to Southgate for experimenting but for those who usually moan about him picking a too defensive line up this shows that simply throwing on all your attacking players doesnt always lead to playing more attacking football.
Getting control of the midfield gives you control of the game and then push your full backs up and get your four attacking players in the game and you dominate and win games
