Nice pubs/bars and cafés - town centre

Hi.
I’m moving to the edge of Burnley town centre and wondered if there are any recommendations for nice places. I’m looking for two kinds of places:-

1. Somewhere nice to get a decent breakfast.

2. Somewhere I can go on my own in the evening (usually during the week) for a quiet drink where I can sit and read a book and relax or maybe have the odd conversation with people or watch sport if there’s any on.

I’d rather avoid a Wetherspoons if possible. Been a long time since I’ve gone out for any drinks in Burnley so not sure where there is any more, except for the bridge.

Thanks

For the breakfast recommend JJ’s Diner, especially now it’s relocated to the Dugdale Arms and there is more room

Agree that JJs at the Dugdale is your best bet for breakfast

Nice pubs, I’d probably stick to those on the outskirts of town if you’re wanting a nice view like Fence gate & Forest at Fence, although there are one or two nice bars in town like Cork House, Williams bar & Kellys bar.

Brilliant. Thank you for your replies. Not heard of JJs so I’ll check that out and the ones in town. Good recommendations for those at fence but for now I’m just looking for walking distance of the town centre.

Much appreciated.

Never been but that Finsley Gate Wharf place looks like a decent set up and is walking distance to town.

Nice pubs to sit and watch the world away mid week. Given that most pubs are fairly empty mid week most would be glad for the trade, but here’s my list where you wouldn’t be out of place reading in the corner of a bar/pub based on you mentioning The Bridge. Good call on the Finsley Gate Wharf, whilst most of the building is a restaurant , there’s a large bar when you walk in which would fit the bill. The Loom makers on Bank Parade is also a bar as well as restaurant and serves tapas. Vintage Claret midweek is quiet and a really nice place. Thornton Arms, whilst a way out has good beer and few locals in. Any of the Cliviger or Worsthorne pubs. Not been for a while but the Town Mouse mid week was quiet. The Cork House would be a good choice, on the edge of town. Sure I’ve missed a couple, but others bound to throw a few more in.

Breakfast JJs Dugdale Rd and Bistro 197 located at Townley Golf club

Also Bistro 197 is also good for lunch and light meals too, never disappoints

Bellissimo and continentals are nice kittle cafe type places for light bites too, both very good, local ownership and located in the town centre.

Went the new Italian in Padiham Vetrano Sunday to try for the first time since it changed hands, and it was very good.
There was a great 3 courses for £20 including a wine or beer offer on, I came out stuffed and more than satisfied with the quality and value.

Quiet beers - New B-rewm sells his own real ales and more, good ocal atmosphere and also have a quiet upstairs, however they've no sky sports but do show sport if its on "normal TV"

Only 2 really in town I would recommend for what you want and Burnley1989 has mentioned them both.

Williams & Cork House, both priced to keep the scrote element out

The Angel Inn up Accy Rd is a Burnley mad pub and is very busy when we are on TV away from home. Bit rough round the edges but full of good people.

Brambles cafe is a hidden gem for a breakfast. Just over the road from Mojitos bar.

Ingham’s diner what used to be JJs on the way to Clivager is very good for breakfast, as is the new JJs at the Dugdale.

Finsley Gate Wharf is well worth a visit. Spent a fortune on it.
Towneley Golf Glub on Tod Road open to the public does a mega breakfast. Balcony has Nice views over over Towneley golf course.
Crow Wood has Bertram's and Wilfred's.
Plumbe street Miners does breakfasts.

As already mentioned The New Brew'm on St James' Row, (down the side of Barclays Bank) is great for a quiet drink or some good conversation if that is what you want, but no Sky Sports. Also if you visit on a Mondy i think it is discounted to about £2 per pint.

Kettledrum is a good pub on the edge of town, been in tonight and it was full - top food and drink. Usually loads eating and locals having a drink.

In town Hideaway, Cork House and Williams are good shouts, Bier House if it's open. Not sure on Loom Makers or the Circ Bar on Bank Parade possibly? Rifle Volunteer Tod Road?

I like The Angel but you're not going to sit and read a book in there surely!!!

Breakfast - JJ's, Bistro 197 at Towneley, Ingham (former J location), Read Garden Centre is recommended.

Bellissimo is brilliant for food during the day. Quick Crepes is worth visiting for food.

The town has come on for food over the last 10/15 years imo

The Bridge and The New Brew'm are the only 2 pubs I go in away from match days. Great choice of beers , particularly The Bridge, but the New Brew'm has a real cosy charm.

For something to eat , during the day, check out the Finsley Wharf. It's only been open since July and they've done a great renovation/ refurbishment of the canal side buildings. Ate there recently at a family gathering and , the food was very good.

Pollazzo hasn't been mentioned and we only went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The food was excellent and very good value for money. The buildings internal layout and decor are a really pleasant suprise. It was a Saturday night and not what you'd call an intimate atmosphere, but a lively and friendly feel. We'll definitely be going back.

A bit further afield is The Staff of Life at Cornholme on the way to Todmorden. A drive out but the food is topnotch.

For two alternatives for food and drink, try Hebden Bridgde and increasingly we're going to Rawtenstall. Both compact easily accessible from here .

Enjoy 😉

If the scope has moved to within 5 miles of turf moor, then I can only suggest The White Swan at fence. It’s a pub first and foremost, but with Michelin star for its food offering.

It’s not “cheap” but it is unbelievable value and the beer (Timmy Taylor’s) is good too

Burnley is absolutely dire for decent eating places and nice homely pubs compared to towns of a similar size. If you want to try some of the places mentioned I would take some air freshener with you.

There are one or two reasonable places, but Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall, Clitheroe and Whalley have far more on offer and these are far smaller than Burnley.

I can personally highly recommend The Vols for your requirements in No 2 above, but as far as watching sport is concerned they have terrestrial but no satellite TV.

"Some bloke" recommended 4 places in Burnley then suggested an "alternative" should he fancy a change of scenery a little further afield. Depending on where he's based he could be in Rawtenstall in around 10 minutes and if you go over the tops from the Kettledrum, you can be in hebden in 20.

🍺The renaissance of Rawtenstall began before I left buddy with the opening of the Hop on Bank St & Casked on Bury Rd,and now it's home to loads of great bars, with Casked opening another bar in Ramsbottom....I participated in them before I left I did my bit in bringing my town back to life again 😉

Honestly, if I was looking for nice bars and cafes Burnley town centre would be the last place on my list.

Having said that, The Bridge is the best of the lot.

Hiya Steve, hope you're well.

Yeah , Rocky is getting really good these days. It's, probably better than Burnley for decent places to eat and drink. We're going more and more. In fact , lady McCartney and and I are going , again, to Casa Tapas on Bacup Road on Saturday. Happy Days. 😊
