Minutes applause

Apologies if this going to sound controversial but this is getting ridiculous now!

While the families of the bereaved have my every sympathy for their losses, this 'process' is becoming a joke now.

Yesterday we had back to back minutes applause and another one about 10 minutes later. Its not inconceivable that we could be doing it for the full 90 minutes in a future game!

Even the Palace players were unsure if they were meant to play on during the first period of clapping.

Someone near me commented tongue in cheek that it had been a bad week (for Burnley deaths).

One other thing, if we do continue with this, aren't those aged over 90 who probably deserve a round of applause for their long term support more than most going to miss out unless we have significant injury time?

Have to agree. This could be done as a collective minute’s applause or similar either before kick off or at half time. I’m really not sure why this should occur at the corresponding minute of the person’s age when they passed.

Unfortunately a number of Burnley fans will die every week, and having 3+ minutes of applause every game is just unnecessary.

It's been done already on here, plenty of people agree with the OP, and plenty don't seem to mind. I don't agree with it personally, it happens so often now it's just lost all meaning, and most of the people clapping just join in without even realising what they're clapping for.

There must be more appropriate occasions to honour the passing of someone than the middle of a football game.

Totally agree with this. I don’t know why they don’t just do it at half time. It’s just completely inappropriate to do it while the match is ongoing.

If someone has lost a child for example in tragic circumstances, the Burnley FC community coming together to show support and solidarity with a message on screen is understandable, it’s heart warming.

For an adult passing off natural causes, it doesn’t need a minute’s applause. It needs to stop.

If my family put a message on the screen when I die I won’t be best pleased.

I’m against it, though Claptrappers makes a valid point.

The annual day that we have, to remember those that have sadly passed, is there for this.

I think people want their friend or family to have a minutes fame to be honest.

The club want to appear nice and probably get an extra 10 ticket sales from FnF going on.

I totally agree, and have had this discussion many times before. It might come across as heartless, but to me it’s people pushing their grief onto others.

We have a match in January where there is a minutes applause for ALL Clarets who have passed in the previous year. I go to watch football, not to make out one Claret is more important than another.

Through Burnley FC Supporters Groups we introduced the annual in memoriam in January each year. We were told several times that the club preferred this idea but could not stop people having pics put up on the big screen.

Wasn’t there a game about three years ago when we had five in one game?

I think standing in silence to remember everyone before one game each season is appropriate. I don’t think what happened yesterday was.

So weird, all of this. Why at football, why are we clapping a stranger who's died, what's the point of that thing in January?.. Do people organise a minute's applause at the Tesco they used to shop at regularly, or the cinema they went to? What is this oddball link between watching a football match and clapping someone dying? Genuinely curious.

I don’t see a problem with it. You don’t have to clap and clapping is not unusual at a football match.

There was a muted response for the 2nd which just makes the whole thing inappropriate. Have the one day for this, have the Rememberance Day silence and also for any esteemed ex players. The whole match can’t be spent clapping fans we didn’t know. It’s not the right time or place. Many people are going for escapism too and to be uplifted. What if the minutes clapping is when the other team have scored are we supposed to clap then too. I think it needs to stop.

None to those, like yourself, who don't support it. But it's an opportunity for us all to remember those who have gone in the previous year. It doesn't disturb the game, it's supported by the club and the players take part in it. I'm not being insensitive but I don't applaud during a game but fully support the annual minute's silence which I first put forward as an idea worth considering.

As it happened, the first of the two in successive minutes yesterday, was a friend of my brother and the second was a friend of mine, but we just got on with watching the match.

Interesting point about disturbing the game has a goal ever been scored during one of these minutes applauses?

Equating the team somebody supports all their life to visiting the local Tesco is arguably weirder. Some people have a slightly greater emotional connection to their football team than the slightly detached one you seem to have.

Agreed the applause was too much yesterday. I sort of understand for a perhaps unexpected passing away of a huge fan but for any fan is too much and they should maybe take a tougher line on it, as difficult as it is.

Getting ridiculous isn’t it. Personally thought it was mad that we marked Remembrance Sunday in October, never mind multiple minute’s applauses every match.

There was a woman a few rows in front of us clearly close to one of the people remembered yesterday, blowing kisses at the big screen and filming the crowd around her. Felt quite bad to be honest as her video will show that most people were completely indifferent to it.

Looks fine either way. People will rightly do what they want to do. Many clap and many don't. Not once have i heard anyone criticising other fans for not clapping. It's got a bit over the top although, as CT refers to, one game the other season was daft at the amount of times it happened.

Sounds like she made it all about herself. I bet she filmed the funeral as well. They’ll certainly be a Facebook post telling everyone about the big screen though.

Nothing says sombre remembrance like publicly blowing kisses at a 20ft LED telly in a damp football stadium while filming disinterested strangers trying to watch a game. It's a lovely tribute and I'm sure what they would have wanted.

We are conditioned to survive 1-0 wins goddamit, not 3-3 goal fests with a wonder goal

I think that we scored at Watford during the applause for Graham Taylor( about the 76th min), a free kick by Westwood and a header by Jack Cork. Not absolutely sure on the scorer but the applause stopped immediately. I felt some of our players lost concentration yesterday during the applause. I know I did. There is, also, an awkward feeling if you don't clap when others are both clapping and standing up, as they were doing in JML.

The Palace players thought we were subbing and were looking towards our bench.

I thought couple of years back this nonsense had stopped and a dedicated ( maybe 2?) day (s) per season were allocated for a remembrance collective round of applause pre match which is way more suitable . If anything it effects the passage of play .

What happens at the big clubs like Utd and Liverpool?

With the world wide fan base they must have over 100 of their fans die each week?

Even with Fergie time it's not enough for all of them.

I would agree but also, if I pop my clogs and my family insist on putting my pic up for a round of applause on matchday, I promise I will come back and haunt them! I can't think of anything I would like less as an act of memoriam for myself.

Maybe we should restrict it to folk who have made a request for it in their Will, or at least have told their family they want it to happen. I also agree that there are occasional exceptions to the rule eg. young children, ex players/staff, etc

It’s a difficult one. It’s a really nice tribute to have for a loved one, but on the other hand, it does lose some meaning when there are so many.

By the time they put up the last one, I just wanted to watch the game but also felt a bit guilty for not clapping with the same gusto. It shouldn’t be like that and is probably a bit of a disservice to those we’re supposed to be commemorating.

And finally, though this may seem cold hearted, it can kill momentum in a game when you have so many like that, as the crowd don’t react to on field events the same.

Do it before the game or at half time.

Taylor died in Jan 2017. We played there in Feb and lost 2-1 but I don’t recall anything. Barnes scored our goal on 78 mins but it was a penalty.

Cork scored there in the following season when there was a minute’s applause before the game for Ray Wilkins. Our goals that day were Vokes & Cork, 71 & 73 mins.

It's not suitable for mid games. Once a season maybe some sort of memorial event in the ground when there is no game on.

Don't even start me with the inane singing at a screen of "you'll always be a Claret", sorry but they they won't be mate.

Quite right CT on Taylor's passing and Cork with the goal given by line tech in April 2018. Watford have done a number of minute applauses for Taylor on the 72nd minute. Our son was there that day and says they were applauding as Cork scored. I promise you will hear it on the highlights clear as day
