Special memories of following our great Club.
We'd not long left behind that wonderful night at Maine Road in '59/'60 when we won the League and then the disappointment of the FA Cup Final defeat in '61/'62 to Tottenham.
Two memorable seasons soon followed in '65/'66 and '66/67. After sensational performances in '65/'66 against top sides we finished second and qualified for the Inter City Fairs Cup the following season. Superb wins over Stuttgart, Lausanne, Napoli and finally an unfortunate defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt could not erase memories of a fantastic season.
What a time to be young and part of a special history of our unique football club.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
You are just that bit more fortunate than me Roy because I didn't start going until 1960/61 so missed the title. I saw all the other years you mention and was fortunate to be at Wembley in 1962.
I also saw the leanest of years in the 80s and 90s and now enjoying these recent years back in the top flight. I'll continue to make the most of it while it lasts.

That's my Clarets watching span too, first game v Everton night match 1959, a 5-2 win. Plenty of gaps in watching them for me, though those Fairs Cup games remain in the memory, plus four trips to Wembley, and the awesome achievements of the Sean Dyche era.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 09, 2021 9:26 pmWe'd not long left behind that wonderful night at Maine Road in '59/'60 when we won the League and then the disappointment of the FA Cup Final defeat in '61/'62 to Tottenham.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
Born in 1962 and my family moved to Kent in 1968 so most of my time following the club we love has involved watching games at Orient, Brentford, Wimbledon. Never dreamt that I would ever see Burnley play in the premier league so even though this season is tough it still fills me with pride. My special memories, in no particular order are the Sherpa Van final at Wembley, beating Spurs 4:1 in the Milk Cup, winning at Southend to clinch promotion, the play off final against Stockport and when we played at Dartford against Maidstone the away fans were allowed out first ! Great thread and look forward to reading other memories. Up The Clarets !!

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
All started for me, Tony, some four seasons before the title win in '59/'60, although my one big regret is being unable to identify the very first game I attended. The first game I remember is the epic FA Cup tie against Chelsea in season '55/'56 when Dad lifted me over the Enclosure perimeter wall in front of the old main stand and a seat on a form. Even then I only remember the equalising goal from Parsons.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Dec 10, 2021 10:57 amYou are just that bit more fortunate than me Roy because I didn't start going until 1960/61 so missed the title. Just a little story attached to that Cup tie......after the initial draw on the Turf we then drew the replay at Stamford Bridge. I think it must have been an afternoon game as I met my Dad after he finished work to proudly tell him at least the third game would be on the Turf.
Of course Dad put me right that we would now be playing at a neutral venue and incredibly after further games at Birmingham and Arsenal grounds we eventually went out of the competition at White Hart Lane. Some five games to sort out a winner, four of which were after extra-time!....seemed so unfair that the replays were based close to Chelsea and the final game was just two days after the previous one at Highbury.
Think I'm right in saying that one of Chelsea's goals in the replay was scored by Peter Sillett who sadly passed away just a few days ago.
Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
I have been watching Burnley since my dad took me on in 1967. My special memory however was the second leg at Plymouth in the play off semi final. No it wasn’t top notch football and we were slowly working our way back but it was electric. I will forever be indebted to Super Johnny Francis.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
Strange rules - second replay on neutral ground (Birmingham) and then the clubs tossed a coin with the winner allowed to choose the venue. Chelsea won the toss and chose Arsenal but rather than us get the choice next game they tossed a coin again and Chelsea won again, this time choosing White Hart Lane.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 11, 2021 9:24 pmAll started for me, Tony, some four seasons before the title win in '59/'60, although my one big regret is being unable to identify the very first game I attended. One of the Sillett brothers scored a penalty in the draw at Birmingham but not sure which of them although it was John who died last week. Peter died back in 1998. They were both in the first Chelsea team I can remember. They were the two full backs the first time I saw Chelsea which was the 4-4 draw when we played our reserves.

Just winning the 2009 play off final. I never thought I’d see Burnley on the Premier League and I just sat there trying to take it in

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
I’d just moved to Burnley when I was 8, 1 day my dad said we were going to watch Burnley for my 1st game as it was kind of important.
That was the Orient game. Apart from that, I’d say the bulk of memories come from;
Wembley Stockport win
York
Chelsea away on the cup 09
Spurs at home in the cup 09
Wembley 09
Basically the whole journey we have been on ever since
Amazing… sometime you really have to pinch yourself that we ever made this league, even for 1 year.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
First game I went on with.my wonderful dad (RIP ) mesmerised late sixties everything as a kid was smokey grey and black. Turf Moor was a kaleidoscope of wonderful colours, Claret blue, light blue silk scarves ,noise like I had never heard, it instantly got me hooked, to this day I have.never had an experience on a football ground like it.
Close calls, Derby away amazing support, York, Wembley x 2, Orient game, winning at bstards , beating Plymouth at Turf Moor to stay up, Scunthorpe away, winning Anglo Scottish cup, beating Celtic qualifying for Europe, taking my children on their first home and away games late eighties, taking grandchildren on this season. So many TBH.

A midweek thrashing of West Ham in the sixties when we played half of our youth team Cup winners comes to mind .Hopefully we will beat them again tomorrow

Winning at PNE in 1988. Lifetime ambition to see Burnley at Wembley came true less than 12 months after Orient. Beyond any wildest dreams at the time.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
I was so young for so many, I think I'd go for Wembley 2009. That's the closest I've ever been to crying as a grown up.
I was hoping to pick something weird and special like huddersfield away, or boston in the cup....but why lie. That weekend watching Burnley in may 2009 was the best football weekend ever, as far as I'm concerned.

So many to choose from.
I’d have to plump for the one that nearly gave me a heart attack through sheer joy. Ings goal. 1-2. Bingo! (-Masters Breakout!)

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
I remember a lot of the above from orient in 87,which was only my second game after Southend the home game before. But I do remember following Inchys appointment and him saying he had a five year plan to get us in the premier league in five years, and being so excited only for my dad to day ‘that’s what they all say!! Haha

I was taken on in the 70s as a kid but didn’t really appreciate the football but can remember the atmosphere and banter in the stands. For me the stand out games that stick in the memory for unforgettable fan experience are York away in Division 4 1992, 2009 Play Off final, Burnley 1 Man Utd 0 2009 and Burnley 1-Middlesbrough 1 2016. My favourite season is the Championship winning season 2015/16.

visited my dad who was dying in Burnley General, and as I left a man came and sat by his bed. A while later I was casually leafing through books whilst waiting for my wife. The book was about Burnley, and I just opened it at a page which mentioned my dad at Maine road for that match. I bought the book and give it to my dad. Turned out the author knew my father from the turf before he was ill and included his memories of that famous night in his book.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
It’s been one hell of a journey, a bloody long one at that. From my first game in 1970 v Arsenal. Then to that day, 9th March 2014 when 12,000 miles away Melbourne Clarets was formed on the back of that incredible night.
Along the way, the promotion season of 72/73. The following couple of seasons in the First Division.
The 4th Division championship “Jimmy Mullens Claret n Blue Army” season, my only ever present season. In fact, during the decline of the 80’s, even though the football was dire. Had some really fantastic days, and weekends away following the Clarets, places like Hereford, Torquay & Gillingham. Of course there were unfriendly places, Hartlepool, Darlington, Cardiff,Grimsby & Lincoln. But Making lifelong friends along the way.
3 trips to wembley, the first after that memorable night at Deepdale. The last speaks for itself. Since then the climb, slowly edging our way up, and up. Then that unforgettable “Owen Coyle da da da da” season, absolutely superb. I even postponed emigrating to Australia by a year just to watch our first Premier League season. Then the 2hat went and spoiled it all. Here we are 11 years later still at the top table, all be it clinging on, but we’re still there!! Thanks to the incredible Sean Dyche.
Following the Clarets sure hasn’t been boring, if not always entertaining. But it’s a journey down and back up we’ve done ourselves. Proud to be a Claret.

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
I was in my front room waiting for the taxi that will take me to the airport. The taxi was late. So I thumbed through No Nay Never anthology reading about our previous European campaigns.
By the early evening I was in Athens.
When we used to finish lower mid table in the championship a lot I read a lot about our European campaigns in that book and was so proud of the town. Now I was living it.
Never have I been more astonished by what can be achieved by this incredible manager and team. “I am going to Athens to watch Burnley”. Just incredible and will probably never be surpassed.

I used to deliver milk to Peter sillett. I had no idea that he had played for Chelsea. At the time he wasn't thought of as a celebrity. The village celebrities were Don estelle and the manager of the pet shop boys who lived in "the white house" and has recently been on "grand designs" having designed his own bauhaus style place in the next village. That one is called "the big white house".
Most of my special memories are from the "when we were ****" period. A lot of them have as much to do with other things that happened at the ground as well as the football especially those games where my then small son (and sometimes daughter) had come along.
Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
Barnet away, Tuesday night, 1992, I think. I can’t remember the result, I can’t even remember the game. But I do remember getting off the tube at north Barnet and all you could hear was Burnley fans chanting. When i came out of the station there were Burnley fans everywhere. The street was lined with coaches. I left work early to go saying I had a meeting. The next day my boss asked me if I’d gone to Barnet. How could I deny it. The following year I came home and have been home ever since. UTC.

Only caught the very tail end of Adamson/Mac so I’ll start with the ‘66 side and the European matches that brought. He’s dead now but I’ll still spit if you mention Johnny Morrisey, we’ll never know what might have been if he hadn’t broken Willie Irvines’ leg.

That 65/66 team was special - I referred to it in the recent Ralph Coates article I wrote but what a forward line we had then - Morgan, Lochhead, Irvine, Harris, Coates.minnieclaret wrote: ↑Sun Dec 12, 2021 9:31 amOnly caught the very tail end of Adamson/Mac so I’ll start with the ‘66 side and the European matches that brought. Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
I have so many special memories of watching the clarets, from the games themselves to the memories of football trips with mates....that's what it's all about for me. Many special memories have been mentioned above, these are mine off the top of my head, in no particular order.
Dad taking me in 1966, Gordon Harris my 1st Claret hero.
Dad taking me to Hillsborough for FA Cup semi, couldn't believe the amount of Geordies and feeling crushed, scared and couldn't see a bloody thing.
The Anglo Scottish Cup run and winning it.
Going to Parkhead to see us beat Celtic and sitting in the main stand and not making a sound when we scored !
Milk Cup semi-final v Liverpool
FA Cup at Derby
Winning at PNE in Sheep Van Trophy...with the stand literally bouncing !
Beating little Stockport at Wembley
The happy times with 'Judas ...Capital Punishment run and beating Sheffield United.
Carlisle & York
Rangers friendly at Ibrox...great day out.
Charlton away.
Aberdeen away.
Winning at Ewood & Old Trafford is always special
Probably many, many more.
I like to think the special memories outnumber the not so special ones but I'm not so sure.

The Mullen adventure holds a special place in my memories of following our club....the play-off final a close second it was just so hard to believe we had made it to the Premier League with those players, and of course Robbie's volley against Utd in our 1st home game in the Premier league, even at my advanced years (was it 54)...I couldn't resist walking past the coach loads of Utd fans after the game and taunting them with the one nil signal, childish I know but it was a sweet moment

Re: Special memories of following our great Club.
Obviously, Ralph v Leeds 1968 comes out top, followed by Brian O'Neil making a tackle (any game) and coming away with the ball.
After that, watching Dobo Lord it over some of the great players in the 70's... all the way to watching the Beast (Home) v Reading. All my memories are Special.

So many memories, every time you think you've got them all covered, you think of more.
I know it wasn't the most important of competitions, but as some have already mentioned, that night at Deepdale in the Sherpa is one that stands out for me, because it marked a kind of coming together for the fans after the near disaster of 1987.
The atmosphere was incredible, I thought the wooden terracing was going to collapse, with all the bouncing around.
For me, it was better than the final, and not because we lost.
But so many great times....

Two for me , winning the title at Preston with Claret and Blue everywhere and the Play off final 2009 .
Remember waiting in the airport to fly home the next day after the final and a lad in a Claret top just smiled at me i nodded back no words were needed .

My first game was against Man United at the Turf either 56 or 57 season, definately before Munich,we lost the game 3-1 with jimmy mac scoring our goal
other memories include scoring 16 goals in two consecutive cup games (Chesterfield and New Brighton).
The most memorable was when we won the league at Maine Road and the european cup games (Reims and Humburg.
