Wood attacking Dwight’s crosses

Desperately missing from our armoury at present.
Think back to the 3-0 home win against West Ham a few seasons back. McNeil was bringing the hall down 40 yards from goal and then mixing it up: sometimes he’d get down the line and once past his man, cut back crosses for Wood and Barnes, or he’d knock it out if his feet and swing deadly curved balls into the box from deep…remember the offside goal (the bullet header from Wood)? It happened time and time again.
When it comes to crossing, Lowton appears to have offered our greatest threat this season.
And whilst I’m here, why aren’t we seeing the constant Taylor/McNeil overlaps that used to bring us so much joy…often resulting in crosses into the box from the byline or corners won?
Regardless, to win games, with our 442 setup, we need balls into the box. I sense Dwight’s current ‘role’ is not only stunting his play, but the performance and fluidity of the whole attacking unit in general.
Time to get back to basics, but with a positive outlook!
Free Dwight and Charlie and Wood will prosper!

How do you expect them to overlap? Every single time the ball gets to either of them there’s at least 2/3 players in front of them.
Until CM is addressed we will have much of the same

Wood's feet never left the ground today- and he's been like that for a while.
No wonder he keeps being subbed.

Just posted something similar jdrobbo.
Will concede that Wood is probably suffering from Dwight not actually playing as a winger and seemingly preferring to play with his back to goal.
But Wood is frustrating the life out of me. Bar one decent effort to press the keeper and close down a player in front of the BL, I thought he was dreadful again today. Falling over, ball bouncing off him, no attempts to control long balls, flick ons nowhere near their intended target and on the odd occasion he did get it down, he misplaced the resulting pass (just before he was rightly hauled off).
I’ll be first to agree that the service to him has been woeful too, but when your team aren’t creating much for you, you need to be way, way better in your general play than Wood is at the moment.
One more chance against Watford, then needs dropping for me.

I like Taylor and I think he really gets himself in some positions. But he is our version of Traore, great at dribbling but his final ball/decision making is very poor

A totem pole would have contributed more than Wood today, but apart from odd glimpses of the old Chris Wood he`s been sadly lacking for quite a while now, admittedly the service which forwards thrive off has been sadly lacking but despite only one win in 17/18 whatever it is Dyche persists with the same old boring tatics game after game, even the free kick and corner routine varies very little if at all. McNeill doesn`t help himself when he takes free kicks ie. gently floated in so easy to defend, WHU had a free kick early on today and it was rifled in from the wing and a more accurate header would have possibly put us behind, so much more difficult to defend and a dream for forwards like Wood. Something isn`t right and I personally don`t think it`s just down to Dwight, different coaching or whatever but it obviously isn`t working and as someone said on a different thread doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity, so is someone on our coaching staff mad

Just out of curiosity.......which stand were you sitting in at todays game?

Perhaps we sent Wood to the stand, as that is where any semblance of a McNeil cross went!

No wonder he keeps being subbed.
I know the service was very poor to him, but when he got the pall he could not get it out of his feet and he gave it to the opposition. Needs a rest from the starting 11. Vydra and Jay looked good together near the end

I think the problem is the lack of quality from our central midfield, right wing and strikers is allowing the opposition to dedicate a lot of resources to stopping our left wing.
One thing I noticed and didn’t like today was on two or three occasions Wood played a decent ball out wide to set wingers up for a cross but didn’t hustle into the middle - I think Dwight’s best cross in the first half was into an empty box because of this. Wonder if he’s tired which would be understandable.

Chances are created by movement. It’s no coincidence that Vydra comes on and we create more chances. The movement of wood is non existent.

Agree with this. While clearly Vydra has issues with composure when finishing, at least he makes useful runs and gives defenders something to think about. The first time in the game West Ham centre halves were actually turned around was when he came on. He should start against Watford.

At the moment, Dwight is receive the ball, do 3 full circles on my left foot, and pass back 10 yards thinking he’s done a job. I’m not sure if that’s tactics or what, but those days when he would roast Alexander Arnold or Clyne to the bye line and whip one in to Wood are definitely on pause.

I think it is an assumption that Dwight has been told to tuck in, I.e. not tactical so much as a confidence issue for Dwight. I don’t think it is coincidental he has been far more visible when sharing the limelight with Cornet for example.
