BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Sporting Ability or Personality ??
Emma Raducanu = bags of personality and emerging ability (although only a one hit wonder so far).
Adam Peaty = fantastic ability but no personality.
Tyson Fury = doesn’t want it.
Lewis Hamilton = not included.
Dame Sarah Storey = who and why ?
Tom Daley = only one half of a successful team (but has probably knitted the producer a nice scarf).
And finally
Rahem Stirling = why ? Probably because he fulfills the BBC’s wish list - after all they are making a program for all tastes and football could never be omitted (could it ??).
In my opinion it’s Emma for Personality or Adam for Ability.

Almost every box ticked, but not all. Still, quite an achievement with only 6 names to work with.
Obviously, Raducanu will walk it by a mile, just a shame she won't be there to accept it.

Just 6 to choose from. Bonkers.
Well actually not the peoples shortlist. I really resent the way authorities like the BBC prescribed our choices.
It’s a similar thing to when they get a well known opera singer to drown out the crowd singing abide with me at the cup final. So get stuffed BBC , not going going to vote.
Had there been a fair choice I would have voted for the Welsh female gold medalist boxer.

Just googled her and she is indeed a remarkable woman. Sorry, I take my earlier comment back - I didn’t follow the Paralympics.
Number 3 on my ability vote - don’t know about her personality.

I'm pretty sure the intended meaning of 'personality' in the title is the more archaic usage to mean 'celebrity' or 'shining light', as opposed to their actual persona.
Which is just as well nowadays with all the media training.

Tyson Fury is by far the best personality but achievement wise for a boxer Josh Taylor gets horrendously overlooked.

England had their best tournament result for 55 years. No question that one of the squad would be on the list. Three goals in the tournament makes him one of the more obvious choices from the squad.

"Personality" in this context doesn't mean who can crack the best jokes or who you'd like to hang out with the most.

Fury has achieved the most from the list in the OP and, of course, he has by far the most "personality" there.

Only 2 goals I think in the finals (Czech + Germany)
Kane scored 4 (Germany, Ukraine (2), Denmark + Italy pen. shoot-out conversion)
Neither have set the world alight since and I would have preferred to have seen one of the midfield heroes (Rice or Philips) but I suppose BBC have to show balance in their selections.

In the 80's when there was little sport on the TV this was as much a review of the sporting year as it was an awards show and in its time it was a popular and very good show giving people sight of sporting events they'd never seen.
Its just completely out of date these days and is almost just a traditional show that is to TV what elevator music is to rock 'n' roll.
I dont get why anyone would want to watch it (but each to their own) but what really makes me laugh are the people who slag it off and run it down yet seem to care and get triggered by it in the same breath - If thats you then please have a word with yourself and sort it out

Agreed he has a personality which helps but is hardly a pre-requisite in order to win this award

Do people still ( after 40 yrs ?) not get that the “ personality “ bit in the title is figurative? and not referring to a cheeky chappy, whose sh@gged the most birds or greatest joke teller. It’s a ruddy awful year ,Fury is of course the rightful winner ( won’t happen ) though the Tennis girl surely wins hands down . I see the list has the requisite mix of colour ,disability and sexuality etc so all is in order . I’d love Fury to win and give Balding a good slap on the arse perhaps telling her to “ get me a pint love and try not to spill it “…

Fury has excluded himself from the running apparently. Is he THAT scared of learning he’s possibly not as popular as he thinks? It’s all a bit juvenile sadly.
Dame Sarah has been immense, Emma did really well and got us all in a good mood with her US open win, Peaty is outstanding in the water, but it really should go to the heavyweight champion.

YAWN!! Is it that time of year again? Who gives a t**s anymore? Stopped watching it 20 yrs ago, when the Beeb lost most of the live sport it WAS so brilliant at broadcasting. Inter County basket weaving never seemed so interesting. SPOTY? One big bore-fest.

The reference to "personality" is in the title and the meaning of this word hasn't changed since since the award's inception.
The personality of the winner has always been a key criterium. Obviously though, those who achieve success have most opportunity to have their "personality" (or more likely, some kind of persona) splashed around in the press. Ergo, it's a bit of a fudge really, isn't it.
However, if you consider personality to mean being copiously libidinous then that's your particular narrow definition.
Fury and Raducanu have achieved the greatest feats of the year but if we're to add in that extra factor according the name of the award I feel it has to go to Fury. Would be churlish to award it to him if he's deliberately ruled himself out though.

He got 3 goals, scored the only goal of the game against Croatia. Also won the penalty against Denmark that got us through to the final.
I'd have had Josh Taylor in there though and probably Joe Root. Only problem for Root is that the rest of the team is so shite we've won nothing despite his incredible form.

I give a nod to Tyson Fury too. The media will whip up young Rad, although perhaps that is an award she should win. Young or newcomer.

Raducanu is a stonewall winner this year. 1-14 in the betting 20-1 bar.

Fury is a champion. He's probably not everybody's Cup of tea but but love him or loath him, you cannot deny he has a certain charisma and a big personality.
Not at all surprised he's made the shortlist.
