Mike Riley

Some shocking decisions over the last couple of weeks from some of the officials. I do wonder if there’s anyone above Riley that questions some of the decisions made and if they do what can they do about it (Riley). In many instances some of the decision making even with the use of VAR is fast becoming farcical. Would an ex professional (s) that’s played the game at a higher level be more suited to that role?

Have a read of that explanation about yesterday's yellow for Kane and red for Robertson and you'll see the issue.

Absolutely correct. I know it’s not Riley and his team that’s making that comment but if that’s the line they’re taking (PGMO) then Riley as General Manager needs replacing.

Dermot Gallagher will be on Sky shortly and, in effect, he's representing PGMOL so will be worth listening to his interpretation of the events of yesterday.
A week ago we had penalties being given that were incorrect, this week we've had the reverse.
I thought Newcastle should have had a pen, I thought Liverpool should and I remain totally bemused that Kane wasn't sent off.
On Riley - I've been in meetings with him recently and he does come across very well but things are clearly not right.

We need to move beyond the same old "blame the ref" position. Cheating is endemic in football. Players deliberately set out to cheat and yet they get no blame whatsoever. I noticed 3 or 4 incidents over the weekends where players went down holding their heads. Clearly deliberately so the ref would stop the game. The replays showed the incidents involved no collision with the head at all. Yet the pundits never say anything. Why? Because they are all ex players in the same club.
Dele Alli deliberately threw himself on the ground to try and win a penalty. Did he get criticised for cheating? No.
So we have a sport where people deliberately set out to con the ref but then become outraged when he occasionally makes a decision they don't agree with. The whole thing is mixed up. VAR makes no difference. It actually makes it worse.

And some of the behaviour on the touchline towards the officials is ridiculous. Klopp is a disgrace.

Spot on.
They need to bring in retrospective charges for these cheating so and so`s, that would help put a stop to it. One of many things wrong with modern day football

Dermot Gallagher's view were that the Newcastle and Liverpool penalty claims should have been pens. Interesting his thoughts on why VAR didn't intervene on the potential red card for Kane. He said the VAR official (Kavanagh) will have seen the same as the on field referee (Tierney) because they are coached in the same way. Gallagher did think it was a red card though.
The two Spurs pen claims he said weren't pens - correct in my view - and he did think Xhaka was fortunate not to be sent off at Leeds.

For once I agree with all that Dermot has said.

The English referees are totally useless, they stick out like a sore thumb at International competition. It's about time the PL spent a few quid on buying referees from abroad, makes no sense to have the very best league in the world with the worst referees.

Kane should have gone. No doubt.
One rule Prem for the English captain, however, same rule does not apply to Scottish captain.

People on here that are old enough to remember Mike Riley when he was a referee will not be surprised at the standard of refs and decisions of var that he is in charge of, because when he was refereeing he was cr@p

There were some poor refs around back then. I can remember a number of them reffing at the Turf as they slithered up the ladder to the Premier League, often used to come into my bar after the game for a drink before they left, 2 of the worst were Mike Riley and Uriah Rennie.

I'm disappointed in Howard Webb, when he became technical director for the PGMOL I thought he would raise the bar but it's got worse.

How can any Burnley fan criticise another teams manager for whinging and whining when we have an olympic standard moaner in our technical area. OK so you don't like Klopp, but how would you have reacted if those decisions had gone against us in that manner? The assault by Krul on VYdra was difficult to understand but the Jotta non penalty was just ridiculous

But the officials were clearly to blame for not sending off Harry Kane.

I don’t understand all this ‘respect’ nonsense. How can players shake hands with opposition players who dive to win penalties and try to get other players sent off?
If I was a professional footballer, I wouldn’t be shaking hands with anyone on the field, before or after the game until it’s sorted.

Interesting chat on 5 live with Clattenburg on there.
I wasn't aware there was a referee "match commander" at games, who hears the mics, sees the var etc.
Clattenburg also states it was a red for Kane and suggesting he got away with it because Robertson didn't have a planted leg is just stupid and dangerous.

The EPL is a pile of bullshit.
We spend more time talking about referees than we do about players.
It's fast becoming some sort of pantomime with all the characters in it.

I've long held the opinion that referees within UEFA at the top level in each country should all be in the pot to referee the top flight games in each others leagues. Lets have 10 referees from around Europe refereeing the gameweek. That would surely improve the standard.

I wouldn't have been happy with those decisions but I don't understand the desire for perfection in every decision. I'm quite happy to play the game, let the ref get on with it as best he can, shake hands and move on. It's a football match that's all. Those seeking perfection in refereeing decisions are set for a lifetime of disappointment. They hoped VAR would sort it. Nope. Just the same arguments but now over the use of technology. It won't stop. I'd much rather scrap VAR, let the ref handle it but penalise players/ clubs retrospectively for deliberate cheating. And very severely as well.

Clearly there is deliberate cheating but let’s be clear the Kane incident is not an argument for scrapping VAR. It is an argument for changing the officials in charge of it

Newcastle have written to the PL to query recent refereeing decisions against them.

Problem is, since multiple tv cameras arrived in grounds. No one really cared. Then the so called experts analysed to the millionth degree every decision. Basically demanding perfection. VAR came in and in the pursuit of said perfection, we got the toenail offside, the millimetre of arm offside, the armpit handball. Now they’re not happy with this because they’ve realised it’s ruining the spectacle of the actually game. Premier league football is now just for those sat on a couch or in a pub. Because it’s being run by technology that’s a couple of hundred miles away. Turning the game into a tv show and not much more.
VAR killing the beautiful game. Let’s get rid and get back to playing the game on the pitch in front of the fans.
