Wood Move Changes Our Hopes

I hope people on here celebrating and joyous about Wood moving realise it starts to change the dynamics of relegation.Wood chose Newcastle as he would have strongly felt they would survive relegation. Thankfully for Newcastle they simply need to finish higher than Norwich, ourselves and Fulham, but they have really strengthened their team with a creator and a scorer and have not stopped yet.I think they will now fight themselves out of relegation and dont forget that home support will make them hard to beat at home

For us it means we need to now finish above Norwich & Fulham (which is quite possible) but also above Leeds or Everton. Its that last bit that tells me its unlikely to happen, whoever we sign in the next few weeks

Whoever we sign will need a few weeks to understand our system and get Dyche-fit before going out on the grass. We need to not get cut adrift for the next month or so before getting up to full speed. Wood leaving means a change and that's what we need

Wood didn't chose Newcastle for anything other than money, it doesn't matter to him if they're relegated, he won't be playing next season if they survive.

Newcastle have had that home support all season and have won 1 game.

All this crap about fitting into our system, it's lump it up field long ball hoof it football my friggin dog could do that all day because you just chase the ball, our tactics are based on rugby, lump it up feild hope it goes out or the other team make a mistake in their half and hit them with a set piece, nothing to learn, any player we buy should go straight in, wood will play this weekend unlike when Dyche brings in player's and they've got to wait week's, it's bloody puzzling why he does it.

Dyche-fit? What does that mean nowadays? The ability to have a gentle jog for a couple of hours... because at the moment, it isn't intensity and sprints

Isn’t Vydra unavailable due to a hernia problem?

I thought it had been reported that his hernia needs managing but he isn't unavailable. Leads me to believe he can play, albeit it not at 100%, if required. Not ideal and hopefully we can get bodies in and we won't need to use him.

The reason for starting this thread was to ask if fans believe we can finish above Everton or Leeds, because that is what its likely to take this season to remain in the PL, as I see Newcastle climbing the table, starting with the Watford game

Why did Wood leave ?

Posted: Thu Jan 13, 2022 4:01 pm
by FCBurnley
I have been trying to remember which away game it was when Wood threw a hissy fit after being subbed. I believe that was effectively the end of his Burnley career. Whether or not Newcastle had already tapped him up we will never know. I have been in and around football most of my life and one thing I can recognize is when a player wants away. He has not been the Chris Wood we all loved for some time. Had he left in different circumstances I would be the first to wish him well. But i believe we have been royally shafted. It is clear that we were left with no option other than to sell. No question in my mind now that we will be relegated ( not only because of this sale ) and that Wood will help Newcastle avoid relegation. The Premier League is a rich mans club as proved by Newcastle trying to buy themselves out of trouble. Howe Trippier Wood will have cost a pretty penny. Sadly we cannot afford to feast at the same table as the big boys

So reportedly, they have only paid us £5 mill now and will pay the other £20 mill in the summer.

The extra £5 mill was paid now to get him, rather than wait until the summer.

No. Read the article on then Burnley website. Woods had. A release clause, it could be triggered at anytime. £25m total. As it’s a release clause it’s all paid upfront. Burnley did not want to sell, they were forced too. Chris wood becomes the most expensive 30 yr old transfer in the Prem and the 6th most expensive 30 year old transfer in world football.

I've been feeling as disinterested as the players look.

He probably won’t be but the north east isn’t a bad area & next season he’ll have options anyway regardless if he’s starting or not & he’ll be more financially secure & you never know if he settles in the north east & Middlesbrough do well it’s not far down the A1 or further north in SPL the boys done good.

Wood left because of money, the same reason others will leave Burnley. They will dress it up as ‘bigger club’, ‘brighter future’, ‘needed to be part of this’ or whatever but if Barrow were paying the most, not a few would have agents their tomorrow.

Wood

We got £25 million for a bloke who is 30 and is having a poor season

Newcastle got a striker who has scored 10+ PL goals for the past four seasons

Both of us have reasons to be happy with the deal, and both of us have reasons to be unhappy with the deal

I don't think anyone on here wouldn't sell Wood for £25 million surely?

Newcastle are nothing like barrow it’s a massive dilution in comparison remember if the club didn’t want this to happen it wouldn’t have done, you sound like sour grapes.

Not sour grapes in the slightest, just fact. Recent history alone suggests I have far more confidence in the running of Burnley Football Club than your good self. I think it was absolutely right to sell once the dust settled. I have every confidence Mr Pace will be moving heaven and earth to sort the team this window. He wants a lot more investment not twitchy partners, just for starters.

Agreed Lancaster (I think)

At 30, and close to 31 and currently playing really poorly, I don’t see much chance of a dramatic improvement, In either his overall football skills or his form.

I have liked him, but this season, his efforts and results have soured the taste I’m afraid.

For me, what he has achieved in the past is pretty much irrelevant. It’s what he’s doing now, and for tha last six months, it’s been a very poor return considering what he’s been paid.

Absolutely. I remain confident. Wood has been able to sulk his way through games far too long. We’ll miss his goals only if we continue to need a big numb en up front… I hopeful we will be trading up not just getting a body in.

25m for Wood is as good as we could have wished for and just about
cancels out what we paid for Cornet, Roberts and Collins.
I would think all of those 3 have increased in value too.
So hopefully the Wood money gives us some considerable leeway
to bring in one or two more who hopefully will also increase their value.

Does it change our hopes of staying up?

Much depends on whether we can find and persuade them to come,
who they are and how quickly they can settle in and make an impact.

We've still 20+ games to play and it's a tall order admittedly.

But you never know. It's not impossible albeit improbable.

I think it’ll be £10 mil incoming & £15 mil trousered. The market we are shopping in is a complete lottery in terms of where we are & it’ll be heavily watched & saturated with scouts we won’t be the only 1s on a bargain hunt.

No I expect we’ll add to it. Pace does not operate like most chairmen. I suspect he has a network of long time associates and friends who sound out our business on the qt before any official involvement arrives from Burnley football club having got the fast track from the other clubs view of it, then, an approach is made. Is my guess.

Jacob, I would not worry too much Alan Pace is not interested in “turning us over”. He moves in mega rich circles, our footballers are paupers compared to the NFL players, just for example. At the moment Alan Pace knows he has to prove himself in his new venture and win us fans over to what they are about, but long term he’s got plenty of people in his corner, and quite a few who can tip in millions like we tip in a tenner.

Like I said, it is early days and millionaires don’t throw money into bad projects, that is why they remain millionaires. Whether you like Burnley becoming a hobby for people who have to shown the place on the map is a different question. But, it is one we have to accept it and move on, because if Alan Pace fails Burnley Football Club has failed, and none of us want that. The price we pay for that success is we ultimately become “pet project” to people looking for a sport in their portfolios rather than fans of the club… but it will provide the kind of money Alan Pace needs to keep pushing the (I hate the terms) franchise/brand forward. And hopefully make influential fans out of the investors, in the long run.
