A great piece. You don’t need to tell me this Tony, but I would have loved the Baseball Ground, wouldn’t I?

We crawled home going back up the A6 after that game.
I remember not seeing that evening very well.
Still can't drag it out though that they're 30 yo memories!

Honestl CT was there any need for you to remind me of that game, and the comical efforts at goalkeeping from mark Kendal! On top of that not getting home until nearly 1 am.

It was great for a cup game John, when you got a whole stand, but the view for a league game was one of the worst in the 4 divisions.

My dad took me to the replay. A brilliant atmosphere on that Saturday afternoon. Up there with the best.

Clean Rooms has to be one of the worse advertising slogans in hotel history. It made the town look shite as well. What a welcome to the town.

If you were in the lower terracing paddocks under the stands you couldn't see the ball much above head night!
It was a great old ground though, full of character.

It was horrendous coming home. The freezing fog had been heading south all evening with around four games abandoned at varying times. There was no chance of it finishing when it came down the second time.

The piece from the Sun shortly afterwards was an essential read, '4000 hard-headed Lancastrians'

I was informed that in the next round where Derby played Villa, the home response to 'Big Fat Ron's Claret and Blue Army' was a rendition of 'Jimmy Mullen's Claret and Blue Army' from the Rams supporters. Wonderful, if true. It certainly brought a sense of pride to my heart.

We ended up staying at Dave Hartley's (RIP) sisters house in Nottingham after the match, my boss didn't believe how bad the fog had been the day after when I got in at dinnertime.....the replayed replay will live with me forever....we just got into a chanting trance with swing low sweet Marriot in the middle of it.....I'd love to hear what he thought of it, he had a great view from upper tier C Stand to the right of us

I can only remember the Baseball Ground as a mudbath. Great team Derby had though with John Ohare Alan Hinton Todd Dave McKay et Al

It must've been awful getting back to Burnley; I was living on the south side of Chesterfield so only 23 miles up the A38/A61 to drive and even that took me about 90 minutes.

Can’t believe that was 30 years ago… might be my memory but I though my the song was “ we want more fog, we want more fog”

An odd but good night

I think we sang that during the replay when we went 2-0 down.

Good article. Was looking forwards to that one. Should we not have a reference to “who ate all the fog” in there for completeness though 😀

Probably one of the worst playing surfaces too. Always a mudbath. They once played a home game (I’m sure it was against Man City) when a penalty was awarded. The game was held up while the groundsman came out an repainted the penalty spot.

Getting back north after the game was abandoned was utterly horrendous. It was 20 mph tops on the motorway and I remember getting about 2 hours sleep before getting up for work. Absolute nightmare and made worse by the fact that someone who posts on here should have been coming with me and cried off at the last minute for reasons unknown and next day couldn't stop laughing!!!
