Any recommendations on where to get one written at a reasonable cost?

British Heart Foundation or similar charity and leave a small contribution from your estate.

Age UK provide a free will writing guide. I recommend reading it and then deciding next steps.

If you're a trade union member then a lot of them provide it for free as part of your membership

Most reputable solicitors will offer a basic will writing service at around £100 each for Mirror Wills.

Don't just assume you can do it yourself though. My father-in-law passed away last month and left numerous 'documents' stating his wishes but none are acceptable for Will purposes. We are now going through Probate. Hopefully there won't be any issues but at least a Will makes everything black and white as to what is wanted.

If your estate isn't complicated you can do a DIY will kit from Smiths or similar. Ours isn't complicated and we did ours, a solicitor we use on other matters said it was perfectly acceptable.

I repeat this every time this topic arises but please, if doing your own, do not get anybody related to a beneficiary to act as a witness. They would take beneficiary out of the will.

Go to the library and get a book. Texts are readily available and suggestions.

Good advice. It's worth paying for peace of mind.

Try Farnworth Rose in Nelson they are very good.

It’s something you wouldn’t know about though it wouldn’t be your problem then, but I get the point of being as reassured as possible even then I’ve known wills being overturned by no win no fee solicitors.

If a will is overturned there needs to be a very good reason.


No reason not to DIY if you have the necessary intelligence and time.
Not too expensive if you use a solicitor.

I disagree.
My mother’s friend had been married to her husband for 20 years.
He left the farm to the kids but said his wife could live in the farm house till her death.

Judge overturned the will and the kids kicked her out.

It largely falls on peoples mental capacities when writing the wills & when contested & to defend it you have to prove the person had a sound mind which can be difficult especially in dementia & Alzheimer’s & easily overturned if doubt emerges.

There was no doubt, he was of sound mind and died suddenly.
The kids had money to spend and won.
Money always wins over reality and truth.

Luckily she was a self made lady who had resources of her own so it was no great issue. We rent her villa in Tenerife every year.

She would have a claim on the property after 20 years, regardless of what the will or kids said.

No matter, she was kicked out and the kids took over. Luckily she had her own money and property. She never wanted the farm or the house value, but still lost.
No will is ever a concrete sealed, it can be challenged and overturned

I would recommend using a good solicitor we used Farley's on Manchester road especially if you have a complicated family situation as we did.

Some of the charities offering will writing services also offer access to a solicitor. In the case of Cancer Research the two solicitors mentioned above are an option:

Can you please link to this ruling? It runs contrary to English law and I'm sure I would have read about it in The Law Society Gazette.

Also, if this is so, why did she go to court? Sounds like you are repeating hearsay, not facts.

She did and lost.
Money wins every time.
Lukily she was self sufficient so in the end it didn’t ruin her life. But lots of wills get over turned. Can a complete waste of money.

Having said all that I have one.
Both parties have a copy due t what happened to a friend.
Friend of mine mother died telling him he would inherit.
Dad ran off with carer a week after she died stating there was no will so he and his sister got nothing.

If you don’t have a copy, your ******.

I used Farnworth Rose, they were really good, plus they hold a copy of the witnessed will and have been paid to act on each of our behalf’s.
