Apologies if already mentioned on a thread.
The commentary I was listening to said that today's game v arsenal meant Burnley become the second team to reach 5000 league games today.
The first was PNE.
Is this correct, do we know?

Seems logical.
We were both one of the League founder members, and PNE will have spent more seasons in the lower tiers where there are more fixtures.
This was the list when PNE got there in summer 2020.
We overtook Notts County due to them falling out of the League
Preston North End 5000
Notts County 4986
Burnley 4936
Wolverhampton Wanderers 4924
Derby County 4894
Bolton Wanderers 4877
West Bromwich Albion 4866
Bury 4852
Blackburn Rovers 4850
Sheffield United 4845

Should have been today, but due to cancellations it will now officially be our home game to Man U I believe.

And Grezza had over 1000 in his career, seems a lot in this context!

it does, doesn't it? Hard to imagine that one player could conceivably have played in a fifth of our entire games 140 years after it all began.

He'd have some cup games too. And friendlies if those are counted.

This is correct. The people saying it was today are counting the 2 games we played at the beginning of the 1939-40 season which were struck from records when World War 2 started and the league disbanded. Therefore with the correct removal of those 2 games, it is indeed the Manchester United game

Ah! glad for the clarity, fitting that it should be Man Utd given our many epic tussles through the decades.

Shame it isn't against one of the original 12. Could we not get in a re-arranged game against Everton or Villa before the Man Utd fixture?

If we are striking games off......do I recall a team in the 1980/90's going bust and their record and results struck from the table......was it Aldershot?
Have those two games been struck from the 5000 total.....I wonder?
Good point about grezza, 20% of our league games, I still haven't worked out how that is possible.

Not correct - two to go.
We have played four other games - two to kick off 1939/40 and two against Aldershot in 1991/92 but they aren't counted, neither are test matches or play offs.

Hope we can celebrate the 5000 with win against United. How good would that feel

Back to Graham Alexander.
Perhaps it wasn't 1000 league games.
Was it 1000 games in total?
Wiki is giving a mere 833 league games
Burnley. I bet the two games that are causing the media problems are the 2 expunged Aldershot games. Surely they know about the war games.

I think the 833 is correct in terms of league games.
