Will most children require an adult to accompany them ?

Absolutely brilliant to see children benefiting like this, but I have to agree… Are there really 1000 pairs of seats available? Assuming parents must attend. All the same, brilliant to see

I noticed on twitter today it appears they’ve been handing out leaflets about College Memberships.
£20 and you get a free shirt, 50% off match tickets and 50% off food and drink in the ground.

Really good initiative. I'm sure Pace realises the ground is better full, and in doing this he might entice five, twenty, or 500 kids to want to come back and start following us. Good stuff.

Really good initiative but just shows how bad our support is, we can’t even sell out in what is our biggest game in years.

This is stuff Championship teams do, we should have no tickets to give away.

Tend to agree. It’s been poor this season.

I’m sure that making ST’s hard to renew is high up there on the list of reasons, alongside Covid, etc. but I really think the town and fan base should be offering more support to the club. The club is so important to the town you’d think people would really want to back it, especially when they’ve never needed them more.

But I also think Alan Pace and ALK need to do more to fill the ground through marketing games (and more widely than just Burnley) and particularly going out of their way to attract younger fans. This is a great start but needs to carry on.

Problem being having an element who would rather illegally stream games, some while living walking distance to the ground. Be a lot better if they found a way to end the availability of streaming games.

The only way that they will ever be able to do that will be to stop showing live games anywhere in the world.

Correct, although I noticed hesgoal.com was down during the Arsenal game so maybe they’re cracking down. I can’t really see how Sky & BT - the two rights holders and probably biggest ISP’s in the country - can’t just block these sites, particularly when it’s in their commercial interests?

But I don’t see that problem going away very soon - so all the more reason to double efforts at the younger fans though who will otherwise only ever know watching football through an iPad! I often walk through Towneley and see kids playing football before the match and think what a shame they’re not going to the game.

Good point. I don’t think it’s true that kids will always follow the team their Dad’s told them to support. I’d say their mates are more influential at a young age. If you give away 1000 and gain 20 lifelong supporters each time, that’s a good investment, I think.

I’d give any unsold seats away to schools and charities a few days before. Not just in Burnley but further afield as well - Rossendale, Todd, Ribble Valley, etc. Besides the obvious long term and charitable benefits, every empty seat is a missed opportunity to maximise matchday revenues.

Good to read something positive on this site for once, and well done Mr Pace, far better to get the ground as full as possible for such a key fixture.

And if only a few of these youngsters then become regular ST holders this incentive will reap dividends in the long run.

A great initiative by Pace. All those saying our support has been poor this season, that may well be but there are other factors involved other than illegal streams. We are coming out of a pandemic and, particularly over the last few weeks, uncertainty whether games will go ahead.

Watching a report in the great levelling up on BBC this morning has Burnley down as one of the poorest towns in Britain with a very high percentage on UC. People just don't have the same disposable income they may have had over 2 years ago when the country was a different place.

I don't blame people for diverting their money in other places that may be of more benefit to them...

Nor do I, albeit with national unemployment levels really low I’m not sure how Burnley is in that situation.

Either way, it would be fantastic for the club to run more initiatives to support under privileged families and youngsters by getting them to the ground on match days. It’s those families that will enjoy and remember it most when their fortunes turn. That’s what “one club for all” should mean.

Or you could look at from the kids point of view. Maybe some of them would never otherwise get to see Burnley as it is really expensive for a family to go. If it gives them a good day then great

On a one game basis it’s a great initiative. And if it fills 1-2k seats overall in fam stand and gives a cheap day out all round ,it can’t be knocked. It’s a massive massive game and could very well determine wether we’re full of optimism or the death knoll starts to ring out .

I've long believed that this should be done.
If we can't fill the Turf, then seats should be given to kids to fill the ground. It gets expensive for some families to go on together, and we need youngsters to fall in love with the club, just as we did in our day. It can reap rewards in the future.

I suppose its the sort of gate that you might get with a population like ours. Population of Watford is getting on to nearly twice ours , In the early 60s as one of the top teams in the country we were getting some gates down to 22,000 (Man City)

I gave a couple of kids the news that I’d rewarded them with tickets for the game today. It was superb to see their faces light up and their appreciation for them. They’d have not have gone on otherwise.

You would think so but no mention of this in the info from the Club. Whilst the free tickets are a great initiative, take-up may be adversely affected if the accompanying adult has to pay full price.

Interesting that it’s been advertised as “Alan Pace has donated…”

Is it him out of his own pocket? Or is he using the clubs own money again?

Have to say I’ve got absolutely no objection to the donation, just interesting how it’s been advertised.

I would very much doubt it’s coming out of his pocket. It’s more the club handing out the tickets.

Not all the "kids" will need accompanying as not all kids are youngsters. Tickets have been given to secondary and college students as well. Also the £20 college membership is actually only £10 as the season is half way through so it's an even better deal.

Fantastic to see we are trying to fill the Turf, by whatever means and trying to engage the kids which are the next generation of claret fans, but we must turn in a performance to get them interested/entertained, put in a performance like Leeds away it may well become counter productive....even if we don't win, put in a performance that fans can see and get behind.

I manage a kids team & over the Premier League years it’s been interesting to see the shirts they wear at training switch from the big clubs to Burnley. I’d say now it’s half and half whereas it was very different a few years back.

Many have never been to TM. Some ask me to take them because their parents can’t or won’t - either they support another team, can’t be bothered or its unaffordable (which I can’t because there are no spare seats near my ST and tbh it’s my family time). Some I know are desperate to go and I hope this initiative will give their parents the nudge they need to get them on. And hopefully come back.

One of the lads whose parents I’d probably say would find it unaffordable turned up to training having received a gift from someone earlier in the week. He couldn’t wait to show me, tell me about it and was smiling from ear to ear. He’s such a lovely boy. Anyway, I’m hoping that this initiative makes a few smile like that, gives many their first experience of live football and one they’ll never forget. I hope we do it for every non sell-out going forward.

Let’s make it an atmosphere to remember and get behind the lads throughout, whatever the score line.

It's a good idea, but looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow it might be a bit grim sat in the lower tier, where I'm assuming the free tickets will be.

To be fair we would be fined and possibly have points deducted for fielding an illegible player. So yeah I would be really naffed off with him.

It seems you would be an ideal team to take on the Turf for a half time kick about if the club still do it.

It is boring and bordering on childish. If this gesture came from Barry Kilby or some of the previous board who were popular it would be a fantastic thing for him to do.

Even the freezing of season tickets which you would expect everyone to be happy about was met with ahh but he was going to raise them, he has been mocked for flying out to try and complete a signing and that he was wrong to be doing so.

The local club for local people has never been stronger.

When I was a young lad the youth club got free tickets for us to go on.
We went in the CF box in the now away end. It has a room underneath the stand where a member of staff made us all a brew at half time.
It was around 1988 so the football wouldn't have been any good, but kids love atmosphere. Where else can they go locally with an atmosphere like the Turf?

No idea if they still do this as I’m usually in the bar beforehand and at HT but would definitely take them on if we could.

My eldest son got to hold a banner on the pitch before a match once and absolutely loved it - anti-racism one or something. Still talks about it to this day. We should go fully overboard with things like this before and at HT to create as many memories for kids as possible.
