On February 3, 1959, American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and ‘The Big Bopper’ J P Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson.

The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died" after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie".

It's something I wasn't aware of at the time but that was some loss to music

I seem to remember there was another major star who was ment to also be on that flight, but arrived too late. Wish I could remember who it was, but how lucky were they that night.

Buddy Holly, like Hendrix later was a far bigger star this side of the Atlantic at the time of his crash; it was the crash itself that led to his adoption by the majority of the American market where he was popular but not the shining megastar he would become post-crash. Some great talent on that plane, I am always amazed when I hear of the other passengers, although the names seem somewhat unfamiliar now how many of the top music of the time they had a hand in. It was a major losss of top talent.

Waylon Jennings says it was him... but Dion claims it was he! Jennings was in Holly's backup band and Dion was also on the tour

Just been reading up on the tour. It was a horror show in itself, in freezing conditions with inadquate tour buses.
Holly was a rare talent, like many I often wonder where it would have taken him if he lived

Definitely a tragic event for music lovers as well as the families of those involved.

I certainly did. I was either on my way to catch the bus for school or on my way home. I cried bucketsful.

Oh Boy!

Buddy Holly was a very talented musician and was rumoured to be re- forming with the Crickets after a short period as a solo artist. Always one of those ‘what if?’ discussions as to how big he would have become if he had lived.

Rave on Buddy.

He did read this link I posted earlier in the thread, https://www.liveabout.com/buddy-hollys- ... h-2522176

Talk about a lucky escape for the guy who didn't get on the flight.

I suspect many people would be unfamiliar with Waylon Jennings, but if you're over 40, you've almost certainly heard him ....

He was the narrator for the original series of " The Dukes of Hazzard ", where every episode would start with something like " Now those Duke boys always seemed to be gettin' in trouble .. " Jennings also sang the theme tune ...

Much more famous as a Country Star and also a member of the super mates group, The Highwaymen.
Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson and Jennings.

I used to live up Rosehill at the time and had a paper round with Fred Rycroft who ran the newsagents / Post Office / library in the parade of shops opposite the Rose and Crown .I was a big Crickets / Holly fan and remember reading about his death on the front page of the Daily Mirror..at the time I didn't realise how good that music was...and still is .Buddy ( Charles Hardin ) was only 22 when he died but by then he had written , produced and played and recorded music that will live on forever .How lucky was I to have been a teenager in the late fifties to mid sixties ? It was pretty good being a Claret then too...still is !!
