First half was a struggle. We gave them far too much space and they were on easy street. Second half I thought we were excellent. Whatever Dyche said at half time clearly worked because we looked like a different side.
For the first time in a while we've got something to cling to. Some hope we can build on. Very good performance and a great result.

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Player Ratings
Pope 9 that was one of the best keeping performances I have seen.
Roberts 5 really struggled defensively
Tarks 8 the guy is just next level.
Mee 6 thought he looked really rusty first half but brought it back.
Pieters 7 thought he was great
McNeil 7 good game and some good passes. Sometimes tries to do a bit too much.
Brownhill 4 I’m sorry I just can’t mark a CM with 58% pass completion higher than that. His job is literally to distribute the ball and he was abysmal at it.
Westwood 6 some good, some bad but all in all not bad.
Cornet 4 I thought he really struggled all game tonight. Not sure what his best position is, I would like to see him on the opposite side.
Weghorst 7 poor first half, excellent second half. He’s clearly good with the ball my concern is how often we are going to be able to get the ball to him on the deck.
Rodriguez 6 great finish and showed desire throughout.

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Player Ratings
Pope 7 - a couple of good saves first half.
Roberts 6 - good energy but thought his quality on the ball was perhaps lacking at times.
Tarkowski 8 - very solid tonight, passing also much more assured.
Mee 8 - some fantastic blocks, particularly second half.
Pieters 7 - thought he was very solid, did well drawing attention to Pogba having two hands wrapped around him for the disallowed goal.
McNeil 6 - tough to mark as there were moments of sheer class but also some real sloppy play. Thought he was poor first half, but not on his own.
Westwood 7 - really good second half, played it quick and simple and worked extremely hard.
Brownhill 7 - his pressing was fantastic in the second half. He's not the most comfortable on the ball but his energy really helps set the tone.
Cornet 6 - a little quiet but some moments of quality.
Rodriguez - 7 excellent finish for the goal and much better second half. Was getting extremely frustrated with the service first half.
Weghorst 8* - phenomenal work effort and loved his physicality in the second half. Also has some quality on the ball, unlucky not to score.
The first half was far, far too passive. We let United dictate the play and settle into a groove, we can't allow teams to do that. The second half was fantastic however and the tempo was much higher - I'd love to see the comparative amount of sprints first half v second half.
Let's hope we continue with that sort of fight for the rest of the season. Even if we go down I can live with us performing like we did in the second half.

Westwood 7 - Also much better, kept the ball well
Brownhill 5 - Not his finest, lost the ball a lot but drives us forwards well
Cornet 6 - Quiet, but good movement. Will score goals
Weghorst 8 - Great game, like Wood but he can play football

Strange one to mark as we looked like a different set of players second half, apart from Tarkowski who had an excellent 90 mins.

Pope 8 Couple of world class saves
Roberts 6
Tarks 8 Needs to play like that for the rest of the season ditto Mee
Mee 8
Pieters 7
Mcneil 5 hopefully the idea of him ever playing as a ten is banished tonight, his fannying about losing the ball in dangerous positions nearly cost us on several occasions,
Westwood 5 tried his best to pass to the wrong team
Brownhill 5 an imposter at this level im afraid how many times did he and westwood pass to utd players, would love to see the stats
Cornet 6 didnt get going really, great pass which everyone missed in the box was offside tho
Weghorst 8 lovely reverse pass for the goal
Jay Rod 8 +1 for the excellent finsh, looks like a huge weight lifted off his shoulders , needs to get on a goal streak if we are to have a chance

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Player Ratings
I wish the side that started had started against Watford, with Stephen’s for Brownhill.
Pope - 8 - a couple of superb saves in the first half and very assured in tough conditions in the second half.
Roberts - 6 - the weak link in the first half when he was too deep and nowhere near enough close enough to Sancho, and culpable for the goal, but showed a real energy and dynamism as the game wore on and he got the chance to attack, and played much closer to Sancho in the second half, allowing the whole team up the pitch.
Pieters - 7 - stuck at it gamely, although I wish he’d put the volley back in the locker.
Tarkowski - 10 - absolutely imperious at the back.
Mee - 9 - close to his best and threw himself in the way of virtually everything. Set the tone after the break by stepping high to win the ball back and get us on the front foot.
Brownhill - 6 - ratted effectively, but gave the ball away far too frequently and in bad areas. Composure and focus in possession must improve if he’s to make it at this level.
Westwood- 8 - slow first half but won the midfield battle after the break, doing all the ugly stuff and using the ball better than he has at times recently.
McNeil - 7 - worked his socks off and when he got the chance looked to be creative played 3 or 4 sumptuous through balls and a couple of wicked crosses. But at times he’s still over thinking it when he’s got the ball and he got caught in possession in dangerous areas three times, which is at least two too many.
Cornet - 7 - in and out and let runners go a few times, but he looks more comfortable on that wing, and carried a threat with his trickery.
Rodriguez - 8 - he should have started on Saturday and he made a big difference, even in the first half. Took his goal beautifully. Not sure the partnership with Weghorst always came off but boy did it for the goal.
Weghorst - 8 - a slow first half but grew into it and showed the class he possesses after the break. If we can find a way of getting runners around us, he’ll give us a focal point. Super for the goal and unlucky with a piledriver minutes later.
Lennon - 7 - worked hard and was bright enough.
It’s a tough ask to survive, but the intensity and bravery to get up the pitch we showed in the second half is the template. We lack pace so we’re going to have to gamble on leaving space in behind - we did that second half and we’re as convincing against a big 6 team at Burnley in some time.
But we have to back it up - that’s the second good point in two games, but the failure to take more from the game in between and before means we still need snookers. But the template - cornet wide and joining in, Weghorst as the focal point and a bit more ball on the ground - gives us something to build on.

Brownhill - completed 19 passes to Burnley players and gave the ball away 13 times. Pass completion percentage of 59%

Dreadful the pair of them. Although I gave them both a score of 4, I was being a little to generous with Brownhill who was diabolical, he really wasn't worthy of a 3Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 10:50 pmWestwood - completed 28 passes to Burnley players and gave the ball away 9 times. First half their movement was just too good for us and we not worked out that lumping up to Jay and WW was a waist of time. Second half we were aggressive, we played the ball into feet and tried to move it, we were fantastic and I really enjoyed it.
Pope 9
Roberts 6 (given a torid time by Sancho at times but stuck at it)
Pieters 6 (all at sea on occasions, but stuck at it and once some really important back post headers)

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Player Ratings
Pope - 9 - kept us in the game first half - at his best
Roberts - 6 - poor for the goal and really struggled generally first half. Credit where due though, stuck at it and much better 2nd half
Tarkowski - 9* - put simply - back to his best
Mee - 9 - another terrific performance
Pieters - 7 - the odd scary moment but solid and got forward on occasion
McNeil - 7 - much better - used the ball well
Brownhill - 8 - some staggering marks. Was the man pressing, breaking up play and winning the second ball that was so desperately missed Saturday
Westwood - 7 - more like it - second half particularly
Cornet - 6 - the odd moment but just doesn’t look quite back at it yet
Jay Rod - 8 - always been an intelligent footballer. Linked up well and what a calm finish. The pairing looks promising
Weghorst - 8 - terrific shift. Some really good link up play and brilliant for the assist. Unlucky not to score
Lennon - 6 - kept the shape
First half United were terrific to be fair - movement and pace too much for us. Second half though we gave it a real go and deserved at least a point.
A performance that gives us some hope at least

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Player Ratings
I see the anti-Brownhill mob are out in force again.
Part of a 2 man mid in 1-1 away at Chelsea, 0-0 away at Arsenal, and 1-1 home to Man U. And people are only interested in quoting his passing stats. He’s not in there just for that he’s in there for the work rate and ratting that contributed to those results. Because Cork and Westwood certainly aren’t.
I’m amazed that people see it so superficially

Game of two halves so hard to score them.
Pope 8
Roberts 5
Tarks 8
Mee 8
Pieters 7
McNeil 7
Westwood 5
Brownhill 5
Cornet 6
Weghorst 7
Jayrod 7
Lennon 6
Personally thought Roberts had a bad game albeit against a tough opponent, he just backed off far too many times.
Nothing wrong with Brownhill and Westwood's endeavour again but severely lacking in quality, too many easy passes going astray week after week, Brownhill the worse passer but slightly more industrial than Westy. Thought McNeil had a better game and showed in spells during the game he's still got the quality.
Thought Weghorst and Rodriguez went for a lot of the same balls first half, attempting to be the flick on man with neither chasing in behind. Second half different story with Weghorst dropping in as the deeper striker to link the play, an encouraging sign.
A great point but is it enough?

Re: Burnley v Manchester United - Player Ratings
Pope 8- Amazing stop from Cavani for what should have been a tap-in.
Roberts 5- Did not impress me today, poor for the goal and frustrating going forwards, felt like Weghorst would have loved Lowton's deep crosses today.
Mee 7- Disallowed own goal aside, had a decent game, good second half.
Tarkowski- 8 * - MOTM very solid second half performance especially.
Pieters 7- Enigma of a player. I think Taylor is better yet as a team we seem more effective with Pieters. Does everything well without ever catching your attention.
McNeil-6. Some moments of good skill, battling runs in tight spaces where he had no support, but still lacking that creative spark he once had.
Westwood 6- Was a passenger in the first half which knocks him down a point, did much better second half.
Brownhill 5- A trier and a battler, but his passing limitations cost us a couple of good breaks.
Cornet- 5. Aside from the (offside) cross, an unusually subdued performance from Max. I said the other day I'm not sure I'd move him away from goal when we need goals, but Jay scored in his place up top. Got to get him in the side, his quality is obvious, but he needs to get the ball more and our midfield is too easily zoned off. Think his natural role is as a wide member of a front 3.
Jay- 7. I thought he'd overplayed his goal but took it brilliantly. Dwelled too long on a good break and crossed over to Cornet when Weghorst made a clever run for a simple slide pass- if he'd spotted it we could have won it.
Weghorst- 8. Didn't quite get enough good opportunities in the box through no real fault of his own. Fought hard, showed his skill and technique with a superb assist, was mobile and at times carried ball from deep, made some clever runs which just didn't quite pay off and unlucky to not score a screamer. Hope he scores soon to get that first one out of the way, on that performance it shouldn't be long.
Edit- I'm being very harsh on my ratings I appreciate and they could all easily be bumped up a point given the opposition and result, just trying to very strictly stick to average/below bar/above average.
