Gunna take the plunge and get one, should last me a good 5 years at least.
Anybody any recommendations on which one to get edging towards the expedition parka which is currently about £900. (Anybody got one how warm are they?)
This isn’t a thread for people to moan about what the fur on these coats are made out of, I’m fully aware animals are killed to make these jackets but that’s life and a whole different topic altogether.

Don’t get a Canada goose. Your paying for a brand which isn’t even a trendy brand anymore.

Plenty of alternatives available at nowhere near that money and easily able to cope with anything we might experience round these parts.

You can stand up from the floor and step out of a car but you can only get down off a duck.

I will buy into technical materials and well-designed, high-quality products where it makes sense.
I've got a Arcteryx jacket I adore and I regarded that as expensive.
There's is a degree of diminishing return, I'd first want to see if it was a better product, if that's even quantifiable (material, durability, temperature et). Then by how much so I could decide if that increase was worth the possibly 500% increase in price.

I went to that shop next to specsavers in town the other week to get a coat. The last one I got from there lasted me 5 years, 45 quid at the time. Went back bought a similar coat for the same price. Can’t complain!

He probably needs to go to next door if he’s seriously planning on shelling out £900.

Do people still wear Canada Goose jackets? I thought that fad died out a while ago.
The proper parkas are obviously very warm, but you won’t find many days where you can wear one in this country. I had a similar north face parka and never wore it as I was always too hot in it, even when the temperature was freezing.
You could get a much more suitable (and far nicer) jacket for a third of the price.

Better off with a North Face 3 in 1, goretex ripcord outershell, with a detachable fleece.
Or if you want a proper parka, a Fjallraven Greenland Winter. Reyt tackle.

One of the very best I've owned, a Special 6, superb performance even when wet and better still, made in the UK from proper materials.

What about if you're looking to annex Poland, will a buffalo smock (special 6) go well a pair German para MK2 boots?

I know the weather on the lower longside has been atrocious lately but spending just short of a grand on a jacket is extreme.

A mate of mine got one from the Canada Goose shop in Manchester and was advised to "try not to wear it in the rain" as the fur will spoil and the down inside wouldn't take much moisture

If you've £900 to spend on a down jacket then there are plenty of alternatives from proper makers.
Rab Expedition Series might be a place to start looking.
Arc'teryx gear is beautifully made as is some of the Mountain Equipment stuff.

One of the few things I can remember from A Level Economics. "Veblen" goods where the popularity increases as the price goes up. Essentially snob value or people paying more for a particular brand way beyond what the actual value would normally be for the product.

Certain people get sucked into it & get ripped off, people who have been about for abit shop & dress differently & usually have heavier wallets & savings.

I bought a Canadian made winter jacket almost 30 years ago, MacGregor. I was living in the Netherlands at the time. It was one of their rare winters when the canals froze enough to hold the Elfstedentoch, 200km ice skating marathon. The jacket always keeps me snug and warm. It was excellent one winter when I was in Chicago and day time "high" was (minus) -20c. I've used it as my skiing jacket since I started skiing in the mid-90s. If it's very cold in the UK I've worn it sometimes to watch the Clarets. It's probably got another 20 years use in it.

I doubt this was a serious question from the OP.
Anyhow, layers are best. Been out for hours (-12C wind chill) wearing a thermal vest, thin wool jumper, winter fleece and a windcheater. You can layer-down if you get too warm. Also, cheap Thinsulate lined hiking trousers will keep your legs warm.

Agree re layers. However the OP can do exactly what he wants with his own money and there are worse ways to spend £900 than on a premium jacket. People here are so quick to judge. Almost like they’re sat waiting for an opportunity.

There was a fancy dress shop at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham, but failing that I’m sure you can get a goose costume much cheaper from Amazon.

I policed a demo outside the Canada Goose store in Oxford Street about 3 years ago.
One of the demonstrators had a laptop which showed workers at the Canada Goose run farms entering the huge pens, and stamping on the geese to kill them.
It was horrific.

If the op hasn't already made their mind up about what jacket all I say is down jackets are not designed for this country, you'd be better spending 300 on a top quality walking jacket with synthetic fillet as it drys loads quicker even whilst wearing it.
I get haglofs clothes and they are top kit you could have a insulation jacket and a overproof for 600.
But if it that goose stuff you want be sure to think that it blends in with the fake ones you see coming out of the cricket field stand and around town. And that's before the thought of how it's been produced

Arc’teryx is also currently miles trendier than Canada goose. Go skiing anywhere in Europe and everyone has them!

Yeah after a lot of deliberation. Absolutely bombproof. Decided it would outlast me, justifying the price ticket. When you get it you'll see where the money has been spent. Good value. I take it with your pseudonym you're another big lad. You need to be because it's heavy. Probably too heavy if you do a lot of hillwalking. Customer service is exceptional and they do free alterations or swap it for a different fit if there's a problem. I slip into a sylph like XXL and it was perfect.
