Collins needs to play

Post by claretandbluesky » Sun Feb 13, 2022 4:42 pm

Don’t know why SD can’t see the blindingly obvious but Collins needs to play.
Either in a back three or in a midfield three.
Power strength and some decent skill.
If ever one player could make a difference to a season it’s him.

We keep on trying different players but ignore the jewel in our midst.

It’s goals we are lacking, nothing wrong with our defence

So we are lacking goals but you want to take off a forward player for another defender.

We could have one of the best back threes in the PL. Collins Tarks Mee. This allows us to be more aggressive going forward and potentially score some goals. Take your pick of the following players. Pick 7
Lennon
Westwood
Brownhill
Roberts
Taylor
Cork
McNeil
WW
Barnes
Vydra
JRod
Cornet
Cork
Stephens
Pieters
Lowton

I fancy SD will never venture to a back three, way outside his comfort zone, but as we know he does love his 4-4-2
Get Collins in midfield with Westwood Brownhill and McNeil

with Cornet and Weghorst/ Rodriguez up front.

We then have the extra defensive player when needed, a powerful midfield with some fluidity.
Goal scoring potential from set pieces, and no weak links.

Yes it might not work, all experiments have that possibility but given our position doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for success is the epitome of futility.

Get your best players out on the pitch.
Always a very good motto.

Get Collins and Tarkowski playing and we will avoid relegation.

uses the ball WAY better than Tarks, look at the first goal, I'm 80% sure Tarks hits it up to Weghorst, Collins takes a second, plays it to feet

I’d be interested to know our stats when Collins has played doesn’t feel like we have lost many, or even conceded that many when he has played?

Can’t not play tarks, he’s our best player by a country mile… you also can’t drop Mee, really tough decision

Exactly Vegas, and Tarky is worth his place in the side for the amount of blocks and tackles he makes i'd play 1 of them in the hole be a 4132

I'm too lazy to check, but it definitely feels like we've been solid when he's played, and it's worth remembering he's only 20, so he should only improve with gaining experience.

£12m looks a steal now, given someone like Ben White went to Arsenal for £50m as an example.

I don't wish to heap too much pressure on Collins shoulders, but I see him as future captain material for Burnley and the ROI.

Im with you on this, and if Dyche pushed say Collins into a defensive midfield role it would only be a tweak on a 442 and become 4132

Not to blow my own trumpet, but I've been getting heckled for that suggestion for the last 3 months.
It would give Roberts (not that he needs it) and Taylor, far more licence to get down the line and put the balls in the box.

Maybe now we have a striker who is more comfortable with his feet Dyche will be more inclined to changing things, Weghorst certainly doesn't want the ball hoofed up to him and by playing into his feet, it improves how we play and makes us look a better side, tricky one for Dyche Wednesday does he change a winning team ? id have money on both Tarky and Westwood comeback in.

Why would you change a system with which you are so set on that the U23s and U18s play it most of the time?
No change in formation for the foreseeable ;)

I never said change it, i was agreeing with other posters that id like to see Collins in the side, but if you look at the last few games even though its been 442 players have changed positions, Cornet being a prime example, so why couldn't Collins play a holding role in midfield and make us even stronger and harder to beat.

I wouldn't play it every match, certainly not against Brighton, but teams like Citeh, and the top clubs, that like to play balls into the gap between the back 4 and midfield, it would cut out a massive weak spot for us, that has cost us many times.

Having three good central defenders isn’t reason enough to play a back three. And none of our centre backs really have the attributes that suit playing in a back three. Today, and recent performances demonstrate that there’s little wrong with the formation (I’d say Cornet’s role in the 4-4-2 is the only question). The main issue is the attitude and positivity, throw in a bit of confidence to boot.

We attacked in great numbers today, full backs overlapping, midfielders bursting into the box - no surprise this lead to Brownhill’s first goal, McNeil getting into goalscoring positions.

Collins looks a great talent, and he’s walked into the side seamlessly. But he doesn’t get in ahead of Tarkowski, who is our best player. Just be a little patience and enjoy the fact that we have strength and depth in this position and a succession plan, regardless of what division we find ourselves in next season.

I've been pushing for 343 for ages, but not atm. We have finally made 442 work again and that is down to WW bring able to trap balls played to him and bring others in. Collins is really impressive but Tarky is the best cb we have had in 40 years. I think Collins might turn out better, but for now he will have to be patient.

Exactly, how many times have we seen balls played between the lines or had players like Son running at us with pace and have been chasing back, i don't think for 1 moment Dyche will put Collins into a holding role but if he could play there it gives us options, what i like about Collins is he's good with feet, although Tarky is a good cente rhalf he does quite often make a sloppy pass out of defence, we would also get more height into the side.

Unfortunately, just because a player looks really good and composed at the back it doesn't necessarily follow that they will be good in a defensive midfield role.

For sure everyone’s got an opinion and you are entitled to yours but doesn’t mean it’s not miles off it. Chucking a centre half, who’s never ever played in midfield, just because he’s a big lad, into a 4–1-3-2 formation is up there with the worst shouts on this board, make no mistake.

But that's your opinion RVclaret and i doubt for 1 moment we will ever find out if he can play there or not, Dyche likes the 442 and will play the players best suited to that system and that isn't putting Collins into a 442 but if he wanted to change for some reason to a 4132 or a 532 or even 352 then both Tarky and Collins could play in the same side, we have had a cracking win today 3 nil away, i haven't said change the system or shape how can you after a great win, i have just agreed with other posters that id like to see Collins in the side but not at the expense of Tarky, its a great position to be in to be able to bring in such a good player when another is unavailable.

Collins played very well today
And will be ready for next season no matter what league we are in
But today we played another team who struggle to score goals
Tarks has to play Weds if available, and for the rest of the season
Simples !

Everyone seems to think Collins will be with us if we are relegated.
Other premier league clubs will be watching him and I fancy wanting him every bit as much as Tarkowski.
Play him now, he has the feet and awareness to play either a holding role like Alexander, or if SD was very brave the attacking centre back alongside Mee and Tarkowski.
Yes it probably won’t happen but Collins brings youth skill and a surety to our defence and the ability to counter. We would be fools to waste that in the situation we find ourselves in.

Fine

We'll make a huge profit on him then

And we have to get used to doing that, rather than keeping them to their contracts run out and we get zilch

Indeed fine and yet we’ll not have made any use of his ability to save us from relegation. Rather see him playing now and then see him playing for us next year in the Premier League. A win win situation.

Unfortunately right now he’s got an outstanding centre half in front of him in Tarkowski and our club captain and leader Mee. Collins has been excellent when called upon and rightly is receiving plaudits. Tark and Mee have the experience of battling their way out of relegation though and therefore are Dyche’s first choice pairing.

Said this before and I will say it again. If he was English he would be a future England captain, of that I have no doubt. Early days but for me is already up there as one of if not the most impressive CB's I have ever seen play at the Turf.

When you have a player of Collins class you find a place for him not wait for someone to depart. Maybe he couldn’t do the midfield role I suggest but I fancy in our situation it’s a gamble worth taking. Good players adapt as we saw with Alexander. He’s got the brain and feet to do so, so he’d be first on the team sheet for me.

What's this desire that some Burnley fans have to constantly play players out of position? Collins is a CB end of.

What is our fans obsession with turning centre backs into defensive midfielders? Every time.
The spirit of ABC lives on seemingly. ;)

Ablueclaret used to say "I fancy" a lot as well before asking for a defender to be moved into midfield.

Do you know him?

Buying young players who can be ready to step in when a good player leaves.

Could catch on.
Exactly people have been crying out for succession planning, and that might mean players find their appearances limited in the short term, but it also means that when Tarks departs we already have his replacement in the building.

Tarks had to bide his time to replace Keane, and that didn't work out too shabbily for us did it.

As did Keane, as did Taylor, as did Pope.

Why we moved away from this is anyones guess.
