Now I probably will be setting myself up for a fall here given my longstanding username......
But imo a lot of their output some 40+ years later still resonates today which puts them in British music in the elite bracket

I wasn't a fan of them at the time TWN because of my heavy Rock roots ... but enjoy their music today as it was "Music of the period" and today resonates as classic late 70's early 80's Music

great stuff buddy

Good band and definitely one of the top 20 or 30 UK bands of all time

Quality outfit, saw From the Jam at the Ritz 3 weeks ago with The Selector in support.
Strange Town and an electric version of That's Entertainment being the highlights.
Martin Atkinson is a big Jam fan coincidentally.

Liked them more when I was younger. Still do but don’t really listen to them much these days. Probably prefer the style council, but can’t abide his solo stuff. He comes across as a bit of a nob too.

On a chance meeting in Manchester, Weller was so taken by an up and coming group on the same show that he changed the direction of The Jam and came up with Sound Affects
It was probably the beginning of the end for The Jam

I could never take to The Style Council. I also find Weller's solo stuff hit and miss, The Jam were way more consistently good.
A mate of mine is Weller's guitar tech.

On Sunset is Weller's most complete album this century imo

I’ve seen From the Jam quite a few times. Always a top night. The Selecter were brilliant! I’d go and watch them again.

“The distant echo of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to the ones that they love and who love them forever”
One of the best opening lyrics ever.

Strange town, that’s entertainment and the butterfly collector are outstanding pieces of work.
Always a fan of The Jam, and I agree with the op, they will go down as one the best British musical outfits in any era.

I love the Jam, proper music from when music was music.
Broken Stones from his Solo stuff is one of my faves.

Saturdays boys live life with insults,
Drink lots of beer and wait for half time results,
Afternoon tea in the light-a-bite, chat up the girls, they
Dig it!

Carnation - melancholy English lyrics at their very best. Ray Davies would give Weller the official stamp of Kinks approval.

One of the more tedious experiences of my lifetime was watching From the Jam. Didn't enjoy them at I'm afraid and I'm partial their music.

Can't say i've ever been a great Weller fan although I fully respect his contribution over the many decades. The exception being On Sunset, which as the OP alludes to his best body of work this century. I fully agree.

Nothing will ever equal The Jam in their prime, and even Paul Weller knows that.
He's made some great songs after that, but nowadays seems to bring out a lot of music with some gems and quite a few mediocre tunes

I was at the King George's gig, too; ticket cost a couple of quid, I think. The Vapors were the support, managed by Bruce Foxton himself, and The Jam were brilliant! It was in between The Modern World and All Mod Cons' albums - so really were the days.

“Saturday’s kids live in council houses, wear V- necked shirts and baggy trousers “
Brilliant one line tribute to Northern Sou culture. I loved how the Jam developed their music in this direction with Heatwave on Setting Sons and other tracks in The Gift.

Just noticed this thread about probably my favourite British band ever. Particularly love All Mod Cons and Setting Sons. The latter never seems to get enough credit for me . It's , in part, a concept album about growing up and the loss of youthful idealism in the face of the world of work and mundane adulthood and Weller's songwriting on tracks like Thick as Thieves, Private Hell and Burning Sky is incredible for a bloke of around 20, as he was at the time. Still enjoy seeing From the Jam whenever they come round, which is pretty often, and also went to the "About the Young Idea" exhibition of Jam artefacts/memorabilia which was on at Somerst House in London 3 or 4 years ago.
Have seen Weller a few times solo and I also agree that On Sunset is his best album this century, and possibly his best solo album full stop.
