I keep mentioning it, but Russia are blasting the areas with large Russian speaking populations, AND THOSE ARE THE REGIONS THAT HAVE STOPPED THE RUSSIANS DEAD.

If Putin thinks that shows "splits in the West" then he's even madder than I thought he was
The Tories are almost certain not to follow through fully on their rhetoric of sanctions to oligarchs because of self interest (to both country and party) and the Germans are almost certain not to ban SWIFT on oil and gas.
All our countries have self interest which they weigh up against the lives of Ukrainians. It sounds harsh but that is reality. Unfortunately I am not persuaded that anything will stop Putin achieving his (revised) objectives for that reason. The West is more ‘together’ than I expected, but not as much as it needs to be, that’s as succinctly as I can put it.

100 % agree.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 8:51 amAbramovich still isn't under UK sanctions. He's probably one of the most prominent oligarchs in the world, given his association/ownership of Chelsea, yet we hit the low-hanging fruit, rather than him. Aye, a guy who has privileged access to Putin, and even bangs on about being able to organise 'peace talks' at the drop of a hat through his privileged access to Putin, yet he remains untouched. It stinks.
The government brought in emergency legislation in to put the country into the curfew known as lockdown based on what has been recently admitted to have been no better than guess work. It should bring in equivalent legislation to enable the government to seize all the liquid and physical assets of any oligarchs residing in the UK Immediately. No guess work or modelling involved here Russia has invaded another non-aggressive sovereign nation.

Re: Russia Invades
I fully expect it all to be tightened up over the weekend. Britain’s legal system is far deeper and more complicated than most ‘newer’ nations. It can be argued the the Tories are reluctant… no one knows the can of worms that could result from legal challenges etc. Therefore getting sanctions to leave no wriggle room for legal challenges takes time. Probably more time than anyone is comfortable with. Most of it (not all) is there to protect out rights, so we need to be careful what we wish for. And I presume is why they are going for the banks first, much easier to take out.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 1:05 pmIt isn’t just those though is it?

Re: Russia Invades
The Abramovich situation will only become clear later. I am on the face of it all for sanctioning him. However, after so long, one has to wonder if he is proving useful to the West in ways not being publicised.
An expert on Russian Oligarchs for example last night suggested that Putin while controlling them has been desperate to get them back within Russia for some time, and that it is they who are trying to distance themselves from him s much as they could for some considerable time…
So WE really don’t know what is happening behind closed doors.

The problem is, as in most Western Societies, but especially UK, is we put that tiny minority all over the press and media. It gives them an audience they don't deserve. It wouldn't be difficult for Putins propaganda machine to make 2 and 2 look like 6.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 12:46 pmHaway man, they are what, 11 MPs and a very small % of the electorate

I assume (well hope to be honest) that you think its profiteering and isn't necessary, rather than the slightly more darker explanation
Do you understand what effect £2 per litre will have on this country?
I mean if you are just looking at a slight rise on cost getting to and from your weekly trip to Tesco, then yeah, it's not a big deal, but that's not where it ends is it?
£2 a litre will raise the cost of everything and will push a fair portion of this country into relative poverty.
Industries will collapse. People will lose their jobs and infant mortality rates will rise.
All because of a stupid war between the West and Russia.
A war that some people seem weirdly excited about.
I'll happily make sacrifices for the people displaced by this pointless conflict, but I certainly won't celebrate its impact for a few likes on here.
I'm off this thread for good now.
I'm sorry if I've offended anyone.

Interestingly China not showing any Premier league games this week on tv as worried about shows of support for the Ukraine, their media is unanimously in support of Russia showing footage and interviews from Russia Today and other Russian broadcasters without veracity, it’s virtually a propaganda tool for Putin with nothing from the Ukranian side ...so much for China as an honest broker !
Re: Russia Invades
I think you're seriously underestimating the strength of the Ukrainians if you think they should just surrender their land. After that Putin will invade Georgia, you will be telling them to roll over and have their belly tickled too. The Ukrainians can win this war, they have the numbers to do so.Mala591 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 12:18 pmIf NATO ‘stands by’ and doesn’t intervene Russia will succeed in their illegal occupation of Ukraine. To save thousands of lives Ukraine should accept the inevitable and surrender. Europe will have changed drastically and will be a much more unstable and dangerous place to live.

Looking back at various reports, there was a belief that cutting the water to Crimea had the potential to lead to another armed conflict.
