Not working is it. Seems to be one of the smaller long throws I've seen. Should we go back to throwing the ball to feet for the return pass and cross?
I think so.
Got a couple of throws tonight in good positions where we could have tried to play it in and cross a ball but instead they just seemed wasted. I don't think I've seen it work successfully for us once yet.
Thoughts?

It’s the poorest aspect of our game atm. They just need to put a defender halfway between six yard box and the edge of the box and it’s an easy clearance.

Complete waste of time and just gives the ball away. Needs to be either improved or abandoned.

Rather than being a Rory Delap style "missile" it's a very slow, looping throw that doesn't reach the danger area....ie it's a bit of a waste of time. By the time the ball has slowly completed it's arc the defender marking our designated "flicker-on" has had plenty of time to adjust his position to make sure he wins the header. Even if not the fact the ball has no pace on it means it just gets flicked on very slowly, again giving defenders and keeper plenty of time to read it's trajectory.

It's absolutely crap.

However, our 'normal' throw-in's aren't much better. Lost count of how many times we throw it to someone's stomach/thigh/chest when it needs to be to feet.

When I first heard about Roberts long throw I was expecting something like Delaps which was a low trajectory and fast, but Connor, although he has the distance, also seems to get a lot of higher on it so it ends up being “floated” in making it easy for the defender.

If used correctly it could be effective, but for it to be effective, you don’t do it every single time.

Not exactly Rory Delap or David Challinor is he.

Just watched a compilation of the Delap throws. What a weapon that was. Still not seen anything come close to that.

the mistake I keep seeing is it's Tarks trying to win the first ball and not Weghorst

Look at how quickly Leicester return the ball into play, they expect it to be thrown in quickly and are on the move before we are set.

We are slow and ponderous meaning we end up either throwing it backwards from a positive position on the field or persisting with the aimless long throw.

Do you mean in terms of a flick on?

If so, I’d rather Weghorst was awaiting the flick on to try and get a shot away. Weghorst also isn’t massively effective in the air, especially considering his size.

yes the flick on, fully get what you are saying but Tarks doesn't seem to be winning them. It's surprisingly ineffective

Weghorst was really poor today with his heading ability
Like you say isn’t massively effective
For a big guy you would be expecting better from him

Tonight I convinced myself that it’s deliberately under-thrown in the hope that the defender’s headed clearance lands at the feet of Westwood to put the cross in whilst the big men are up. I’m not being sarcastic, I genuinely think this may be the case. Either way it’s terrible and I reckon I could probably get a similar distance.

It has to be tactical - unless my memory fails me (it often does) there were videos knocking about of Roberts taking throw ins for Swansea that were comfortably reaching the penalty spot

I really don’t like floaters. Have a second look.

This. We do it the same way as we float free kicks into the box: to win the second ball.

Our throws are terrible and it's even worse when Lowton takes them. Roberts can actually pick out a man with a quick throw and he can help make some ground against top teams defensively too.

He admitted himself you can't control exactly where the ball lands with his throws but personally I'd rather see them than us just throwing it backwards like Taylor and Lowton do because they're so slow.

It would help if any of our players could win a header. Unfortunately our 6’ 5” striker doesn’t jump, and isn’t very clever in the air. That’s just not his game. Wood was better in the air.

Roberts long throw was the best part of his game last night and the throws were dross

Completely ineffective so far.

Not long, no accuracy....little point.

A couple of times he's thrown it long down the line, which was way more effective - though his teammates were a bit slow on the uptake.

Yep, it's weak. Fulledge Colts could defend it....

Not easy when you have to run uphill on the Longside/Cricket Field Stand end.

It's a mid length throw. I can't really recall us winning a clean flick on from one. It's always short of where we are attacking from.

Put it away or use it as a decoy to create space for someone to have time to cross
