What is the point in bringing on Barnes at 4-0 down with 15 minutes left. The game was gone and we learnt nothing new by playing him. There’s surely no harm in bringing Richardson on to give him some experience, we might need him next season with the number of forwards we’ve got out of contract.

Absolutely. It was the perfect opportunity to give him 20-25 minutes today.

True this.
Disappointing we don’t give youth a chance in these situations.

He came on when we were getting beat 4-0 at Spurs last season. I’d like to see him get a go as none of our other strikers score goals either so he can’t do any worse.

Too young and raw.
Won't have had that attackinginstinct coached out of him yet.
Also he's quire short, so probably not best suited to handle the hoof!

We could have Salah Mane and Vardy up front and they wouldn't score either with the likes of Westwood, Brownhill and McNeil in midfield. If it's not a cross or a set piece then we never look like creating anything.
McNeil 0 goals 1 assist
Cork 0 goals 0 assists
Westwood 0 goals 3 assists
Brownhill 1 goal 1 assist
This is from a combined 75 starts. 1 goal in 75 games. 4 assists in 75 games. This is where our problems stem from.

Dyche probably sensed the fans itching to destroy a 22 year old youth team product and figured he’d be a moron to expose Richardson to that.

Tottenham 4 Burnley 0 - Burnley bring on Lewis Richardson.

Away.
As for the logic of the change - pretty obviously we’re trying to get Barnes minutes to get back to full sharpness.

I agree with the poster further up. It did make sense to bring Barnes on for minutes. It's what gets me when people say Richardson should be starting! And I bet they've never seen him kick a ball.

So how many (possibly wasted) minutes will that take?
I've been a huge fan on Ashley Barnes but can't help thinking his time is up now.

I think his time will be up after this season unless we go down. I can see him staying next season in the Championship if we do drop.

There was no point bringing him on at all but sense in giving Barnes a few minutes.
Totally agree though, why on earth would you risk a young player in that toxic atmosphere?

Not having that, why would a young player be destroyed whilst coming on , you can't think for one minute that he would be turned on by the crowd.

No. The second half performance on the pitch today was disappointing. The crowd performance was shocking.

The priority was quite clearly (and rightly) to give Barnes minutes because he's the most likely to be involved in the next few games, so needed more fitness. We all know that (well 99%). But had Barnes been match fit and ready? Then Barnes would have come on earlier - so Richardson still wouldn't have come on.

So the ongoing problem for an emerging young player would seem to be:
If we are playing well we don't need him.
if we are playing badly we can't risk him.
Not great, is it?

You don’t remember young Hewitt coming on then?
Ok it not so much being “turned on” (that sounds so wrong btw) but he misplaced a pass and there were groans, which tbh would still have happened if it was Messi
If they are “good enough” to be on the bench then I do agree that they need the opportunity to see how they do in the first team, but I’m not sure against a team like Chelsea it would have been the best place

Best thing that could happen for Richardson would be for us to be relegated.
Could be 3rd or at worst 4th striker if that happened and would probably get on more weeks than not.
If it wasn’t for ALK I would be happy to be relegated, Clear out the old wood and have the opportunity to blood some players who may not be Prem standard just yet. Having said that it may prompt ALK into a fire sale where we have no chance to get back up.

Nobody is going to turn on a young player when we’re 4-0 down. Who honestly cared about anything that happened in the last half an hour of that game yesterday. If it’s 1-1 and he makes a mistake then obviously the crowd would react, but that’s just not going to happen at 4-0.

Absolutely BFC123.
The logic on this thread used to explain why Richardson couldn’t and shouldn’t have been introduced would have Leonard Nimoy turning in his grave.
Barnes won’t regain sharpness. He was never sharp to begin with. Brilliant player for us, one of my favourites, but his time at this level is up. Probably only a handful of people can’t recognise that. Sadly one of them is SD.
The biggest problem we have with our substitutions, is they are usually the wrong ones at the wrong time. It’s the main chink in SD’s armour. At 0-1 McNeil should’ve been hooked immediately after the goal. He was shocking in almost every element of his game. Dyche makes a sub, hooks Jay. Not surprising there were boo’s ringing out.
It’s all well and good feeling out the same old same old about there not being enough strength on the bench, but when the players on the pitch (McNeil in this instance) are offering nothing and clearly having a mare, and the option is there to change it up (Cornet) not doing so is downright dereliction.
A wasted opportunity not getting the young lad Richardson some minutes yesterday imho.

Yes but Steven Hewitt misplaced a pass in his 10 minutes of first team football, the crowd reacted and thus we can never try a young player ever again regardless of the game situation.
There is some nonsense written on this board but referencing Steven Hewitt is up there.

The manager referenced Steven Hewitt at the time and said he didn't think the Burnley fans wanted young players coming through, the exact opposite to how it had been at Watford.
Re: Richardson, the lad has had 45 minutes football since coming back from his broken ankle. I'm sure he'd have been very much part of the first team squad this season but for the injury. Whether he's ready to come on our not, it's good experience for him being there.

Absolutely not, I've seen comments from many young players over the years who have been given opportunities to go on the bench and how invaluable it is to be part of things on a match day. Same experience watching in the crowd? Don't make me laugh.
