Forgot to say thanks to heavy roller again

Enjoyed that - thanks. A few points:

1. I think we wore the claret shorts. I liked that kit - white/claret/white. Wasn't there a version with light blue shorts too?
2. No free kicks at all were shown and hardly any throw-ins.
3. Everton were a lot more energetic. We played a slower passing game but our passing was off.

We didn't wear claret shorts in that era. It was the mid 60's when we had claret shorts and light blue shorts.
The pitch was in an awful condition, par for the course in 1962 and our very deliberate passing just didn't work for us.
The season was just over a week away from a very long, enforced break until March due to the 'big freeze'.

Classic Jimmy Mac goal....started the move himself and finished superbly with his "so-called" weaker foot. The man was a genius. We were third in the First Division after this game and I think that's where we finished that season.

Amazing how high we were in the table and some of the all time legends on show yet some of the passing and defending would have this forum in meltdown if it occurred today. Probably unfair to compare standards and our modern day expectations.

The only short colours we wore then were either white or black

I like it. Perhaps we should re-introduce it, if we had a player it could apply to!

There are 25 seconds between their 3rd goal and the re-start.

I'd guess we average 2 minutes these days.

Harry Potts, I'm told, was always known as the schemer and Jimmy Mac followed him. That was in the days when the wingers would centre the ball rather than cross it.

As I said didn’t look a good day for us, but Everton we’re very slick and more ‘modern’ in style, and as Tony said Young was outstanding

Young was a terrific player and I seem to recall him being outstanding that day. Years later I worked with an Evertonian who adored Young.

Roy Vernon was their other inside forward that day, but remember him more as part of this forward line.......Douglas, Dobing, Dougan, Vernon & MacLeod.

I can’t really remember that Blackburn team, Douglas obviously but the others at different clubs. Remember us drawing 2-2 at Goodison a week before we met in the FA Cup in 62 and Vernon scored both.

Young was adored at Goodison though. He was there eight years.

Blackburn were a decent enough team around the time we won the First Division in '59/'60 and they reached the Cup Final in '60. Not sure whether Vernon featured in the Final but I suspect he would have done. They had a half-back line of Clayton, Woods & McGrath behind that forward line I previously posted.

Clayton was to Blackburn as Adamson was to Burnley, but to be fair the whole half-back line was exceptional.

Should have mentioned that on their way to the Cup Final in '60 they somehow contrived to beat us in the 6th Round. We were leading 3-0 on the Turf before they managed to draw level after being awarded a controversial penalty against Alex Elder. Then beat us in the replay at Ewood. As a tiddler at the time I was gutted for days.

That cup tie was the last one I missed on the Turf until we had to play behind closed doors last year. I wasn’t going then but my dad told me all about the dodgy pen.

Very dodgy penalty. Only around 15 mins. left but we fell apart. Sat in the main stand for this one with my eldest brother. Just a few weeks short of my 8th birthday. My enthusiasm still expected us to win the replay.

Looking at the league table at the end of that superb link we were still five points behind Tottenham with some ten games left to play. One major setback apart away at Wolves we went on a terrific run culminating in that unforgettable night at Maine Road at the beginning of May.

My first game was 62/63 season the opening fixture with Everton the result 1 - 3 . Hey ho nearly sixty years on.... off to Brentford on Saturday ....don't you just love it .

Game two weeks later at home to Sheffield Wednesday now added. Not sure how this passed a pitch inspection.

I was on for this game vs Wednesday and will always remember the blue lines and orange ball and of course the buzz whenever Jimmy Mac got the ball. A burst of speed for the fourth goal tells us that he was far from being a spent force at this stage. This was Jimmy's last home league appearance in a Claret shirt.

The snow was rolled wasn't it?

I've seen games into the 1970s on rolled snow, blue lines and the orange ball. It was just taken for granted. Likewise it looks like there was snow on the Bee Hole End.

I think there was a story that our groundsman painted the goalposts blue too but the ref told him the Laws said they had to be white. Of course I might have imagined that.

And that was it for football at Turf Moor until March apart from a sudden 'thaw' that enabled a 4th round FA Cup tie to go ahead v Liverpool in late January. Same all over the country and for those on here who remember it there is no accurate way to describe how cold it was. Ice on the inside of windows is something I recall from being a 10 year old in Rossendale but school was open every day.

One of only two first division games to survive that day because of the weather and we didn’t play another league game for nine weeks. Shocking winter.

Alex Young "the golden vision" seemed to hover in the air waiting for the ball then bullet in the headers.A class striker who played Sunday league for his local pub team when retired.
