The club shop used to sell lapel badges in the 60s with 'Turfites' on.

We adopted Claret & Blue in 1910 so certainly not before then
I'd imagine we'd have to wear the kit for at least a handful of years before it became a nickname.

When I started supporting, from afar, in the early 1960’s we were known as The Turfites. Not sure when that changed, definitively, to The Clarets.

I always remember as a kid that Burnley were called the Turfites but this was never really adopted by Burnley fans who have always used ‘the Clarets’. I think the Turfites handle seems to have been dropped sometime around the early seventies.

Didn't the club once try to introduce a mascot by the name of Turfy Topper ?
Never really took off.

We were the Royalites for a while after the visit of the future Edward VII to the Turf.

Now Reading, formerly 'The Biscuitmen' are now the Royals after Royal Berkshire.
I remember as a lad at Elm Park, the crowd would shout wither come on you Biscuits or come on you hoops.

When I moved to Burnley in 1961 I had a quiz book that gave Burnley’s nickname as the turfites, when I mentioned this I was told that I did not know what I was talking about and that the nickname was definitely the clarets.

Am I right in thinking we had a spell out of Claret and Blue during and after WW2, but reverted due to popular demand?

I remember the football stats books from many years ago when we were nicknamed 'The Turfites'. Man City were 'Citizens', Aston Villa were 'Villains', Chelsea were 'The Pensioners', Sunderland were 'Rokerites'. Everyone had an official nickname. West Brom were 'The Throstles'( what happened there?) and I'm sure Crystal Palace were 'The Glaziers'.

glad the "Turfites" was dropped, makes us sound like some kind of soil infestation.

My rattle in the early 60's had "LARETS" on it. The "C" got lost and was never replaced.

I’ve always thought Bulls would be appropriate for a nickname. It’s the name of the pub where the club was formed and I can’t think of another high profile football club with the same nickname.
Not that I think we should change the nickname now, it’s just seemed like a missed opportunity from some years ago

Not sure being named after a pub is a good thing. We would be called a pub team!
