Staged or just a massive overreaction?

Looked staged to me, Smith was laughing along with everyone, then he marches up takes the longest most obvious swing and yet Chris Rock never moves, not his arms to protect himself or his head to get out of the way, Smith then walks off smiling and smirking, typical American over the top cobblers

Certainly not staged, you can tell by the reactions and Will Smith's comments directly afterwards. He shouldn't have done it, but I think the joke was making light of what was seemingly considered a private medical matter and he just lost it. Livened proceedings up a little, at least.

Attention seeking fannies.

A real pity the BBC felt this bit of playground handbags more important than other events this morning.

It occupied the first 14 mins of the 8am news on I player.

Whether staged or not, does it really need to be headline news with everything else that's going on, I put Sky sports news on at 8'o'clock and it was the headline on there as well, turned over to G.M.B. (yes I know its not something I watch normally) the education seceraty is on there and the 1st question Suzanne Reid asks is for are his thoughts on it

Sky Sports News or Sky News?

I know Sky Sports News can be a little random & click-bait sometimes, but why would a sports channel be commenting on the Oscars (unless they thought it was the former Chelsea player)?

I think it’s because Will Smith won his Oscar for his portrayal of the Williams sisters’ father. Very tenuous link between the event and sport though.

Probably not, but it's a public interest story and people like celebrity incident. I'm not saying it's necessarily right but it is what it is, and the networks are aware that it'll get people watching. It'll be chip paper in a day or two anyway.

What the education secretary should have replied to Ms Reid was something like “have you really brought me on the programme this morning to discuss something like that” followed by “ with what’s going on in the world I have no interest whatsoever about it.” Just to add I didn’t watch GMB so I don’t know what the ES answered.

Is it just me who thinks he obviously doesn't actually hit him? There's daylight between his hand and Rock the entire time. It's looks a stage fight punch.

To be fair, when you’re on every morning, there’s only so much you can cover on the main stories.

Not staged, and from reading up on things it appears that Will Smith’s wife is a bit of a nut job.

100% not staged, why would a programme stage something to show the whole production in a bad light, it makes no sense. This is the Oscar’s not the Brit awards.

I think Will Smith needs professional help, have done for a while

That may be the case. but having to have your head shaved due to Alopecia and then having someone publicly take the **** is not ideal.

Obviously staged. Attention seeking bullshit really. If it wasn’t, then my only wish would have been for Ricky Gervais to be up there as he would have ripped Will Smith apart with his jokes.

Appreciate that, but the point I was trying to make is that Will Smith (supposedly a Hollywood good guy) probably lashed out not because of the joke Chris Rock made, indeed he was actually laughing along initially, but because of the countless other jokes that have been doing the rounds about his marriage and his wife’s infidelities with men half her age.

Hmmm. Not really. Unless you're happy for someone to punch you next time you say something they don't like.

Will Smith knew he was going to be up on stage receiving the best actor oscar shortly after that "joke". That could have been his platform to do something positive.

Stole the attention from the other winners. I've already forgotten the name of the person who directed the 'Best Dogfood' commercial.

Smith was laughing along with the joke until he saw his wife's face. I think he'd have got a bigger slap later if he hadn't done something.

He then embarrassingly shouts, "keep my wife's name out of your mouth!" but Rock had called her GI Jane, so Smith was technically calling her GI Jane too

Fairly low rent, making a joke about his wife's alopecia. To be fair, he should have smacked him harder.

When I first saw the incident I didn’t understand the joke and therefore though Will Smith was being a dick

I then read about his wives alopecia and that changed my mind.

If I had alopecia or just went bald and someone joked calling me b0llock head it wouldn’t bother me, however hair is very important to a lot of women and losing can be very distressing. Smith was brave to call out a out of order joke knowing the crap he’s now going to get.

That said having done further reading it appears there relationship is all over the place and Smith looks a bit unstable

she is not a nice woman at all. The joke was lame but was weak as **** tbh, had it been certain other comedians it would have been brutal. I'm a massive Will Smith fan but he got it badly wrong last night

What peed me off was every time I changed channels this morning to get real news all the news channels were covering the Oscar's be it the slap the frocks and dresses, the parties etc it's just a load of back slapping luvies being fake. Or face slapping in Wilf Smith's case)

For those saying it’s fake, what does Will Smith gain from it all?

He doesn’t need publicity, certainly not that type and his nice guy image takes a hiding.

I just don’t see why it would be staged.

Just the same as typical British over the top cobblers then I guess.
It was clearly real, could see it in the reaction of his wife, rock and smith.

Real for me too. Chris Rock initially laughed the punch off but after Will Smith shouted the abuse at him he looked clearly flustered. He looked lost for words..and that isn't Chris Rock. He also blundered his first lines after this.
There is also no way the Academy would allow obscenities to be shouted at such an event without it being off the cuff.

However it looks initially that Will Smith laughed at the joke..whilst Jada rolled her eyes. Once it panned back to Rock something must have happened between them for Smith to get up...or Smith suddenly realised what he had said.
Will Smiths abuse made little sense either. Rock never mentioned Jadas name. I think Smith was either feeling the effects of too much champers or something a little more lets say..powdery. His acceptance speech was total rambling nonsense.

Anyway away from all the shenanigans, well done to all the winners, particularly Coda and Sir Kenneth Branagh for Belfast, amazingly his 1st ever Oscar. Sadly due to all the fall out from the the Chris Rock/Will Smith farce their success has been largely overshadowed.
