Garden tools...

Doing some work in the front garden the other day and my garden fork handle snapped.
Popped into our local DIY shop this morning and couldn't resist the old "Two Ronnies" Fork'andles ... andles for forks line.
Needless to say it brought a smile and a long chat about gardening and tools for the job ... probably around 40 minutes later I was on my way home with a lovely new "Fork'andle
Now the Fork I was replacing the handle on, is older than me and was my Grandfathers favourite gardening fork (in fact I believe it was being used when my Mother was a child... she would have been 100 last month) so for Β£7.99 and 1/2 an hours work, the good old fork now sports a new handle. Hopefully it will give another couple of generations of gardening work.

Bosscat, I still use my Grandadβs spade. He died in 1972 and I fully understand how these humble garden tools spare held so dear to us. He was the one who introduced me to Burnley back in the 50βs. Respect to you.

my Grandfather died in 67 ... the fork (and spade) were then used by my Dad who passed in 85, and I have used them since

Classic episode when he was praised for saving the council a fortune by having the same brush for 20 years! It only required 7 new handles and 10 new heads in that time!

I bought this practically all metal spade - good colour isn't it. However after it's first use:

I've still got the pitchfork used by Tommy Danna, the legendary Burnley groundsman of the 50/60s. It then passed onto his assistant John Jameson, who gave it me, as It had been so well used by those 2. It has about 4" of fork left. It's an unusual bit of Turf Moor history. I don't think it's the type of thing, they would want in the Club museum.

Tommy Danns, not Danna, as above.

I got another spade, this time green but with a wooden handle. I think the extra bit of flex with wood makes it tougher.
On a groundsman's fork, as a groundsman we used it to help replace divots and lift scuff marks, although a metal rake is better for this. Mostly the fork would be used for drainage, pushing it into wet ground then levering the ground up. This would get surface water to run down and, we were told, aerate the ground (I'm not so sure about the latter because pushing the fork in smooths the clay on the surface of the hole). After that we'd shovel sand on top, and if we were keen, get a broom and brush that sand so it went down the holes so hopefully keeping the surface of the hole open for water to penetrate.
Divoting - one of the most boring jobs!
These days I don't think they get divots at the top level because of the strongly rooted grasses and the plastic weave mixed in although they do get scuff marks, notably when players do that 'on the knees' goal celebration. As a former groundsman I cringe when I see that!
