Easiest ratings of the season I think. Not much in many of the performances, just a general apathetic performance that seems to becoming all too common.

5 for the lot. A bunch of players going through the motions absolute garbage. Pressing and tackling seem to be a thing of the past.

Pope 7 Could do nothing about the goals, a few smart saves
Roberts 6 ok
Long 7 did very well, probably MOTM
Tarkowski 6
Taylor 5
Lennon 6
Brownhill 6
Cork 6
Westwood 5
McNeil 5
Weghorst 6

Cornet 6

Mission accomplished you feel, we set up not to take a hammering, and at 2-0 early on we did well to avoid another thrashing.
I felt City wasn't too bothered about putting us to the sword, it had a pre season friendly/training session feel about it, so we probably caught them at a good time

Brilliant game management from them, they have Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and never broke sweat. They just passed the ball around us. At times our players looked scared to challenge them. They probably won’t have an easier more perfect pre-Champions League fixture.

Agreed, it's like we had shaken hands at a 2-0 score line, they looked like a bunch of older kids playing at being interested with a game v year 7s.
It was so pedestrianised and easy for them.

Genuinely Sean Dyche, Billy Mercer and Ian Woan could have played in that City back 5 today and thed have still won.

Weghorst 4

I know Weghorst is the most recent love child of this board but he’s not premier league quality. We have signed a 30 odd year old Peter crouch for 13m.

Depends what you class as hoofball. I would say at least a quarter of our passes were long balls.

In my opinion it was hoof ball yes. Hence my low marks.

After the first 20 minutes I really just wanted to leave. But second half I felt we picked up the pace a bit, tried to find ways through, and at least made the last 45 less of a drag than the first 45.

BUT people have to be a bit realistic here. That city team is about as good as it gets. In the world. Like the best in the world….

Pope- 7 decent performance and a few good saves
Roberts- 5 really is naive at times. Wasted a really good opportunity to either shoot or put in a decent ball. I think I’d probably start Lowton.
Long - 6 didn’t do much wrong. Hard to judge him too harshly. He is what he is. A back up to a back up at this level.
Tarks - 7. Decent and strong as ever.
Taylor- 6. A few decent runs forward. Doesn’t have the reliability factor and footballing intelligence of Pieters.
Lennon- 8. I’ve really liked him this year. He’s properly committed and if we are going to perform a miracle, the rest of the squad need to look at him and his effort levels.
Cork- 6. Thought he did ok. He is committed.
Westwood- 5, really poor first half. Not too bad in the second.
Brownhill- 7. Think he’s been a lot better in 2022. Wasn’t his best game, but the quality of the opposition is another level.
McNeil- 4. Really poor today and no suppose to see him hooked
Weghorst - 6. Puts it about. Thought he was unlucky to get the card and I also think that changed his game a bit. Think there’s a lot more to come this season for him.

Subs:
Cornet- 6. Looked reasonably bright and energetic
Jay rod- 6. Didn’t massively impact the game but found space and got a half decent shot away

Difficult to mark because at half time the scores would have been way, way lower, but tbf we did far better second half and defended much better and even made several half decent, half chances. Today was an irrelevance really unless we got beaten by 7 or 8 which we didn't and it's really all about Wednesday and next Sunday, so let's see where we are after that. The worry is that if Kevin Long has been possibly our best player, how on earth can we hope to turn things around!!

Have to agree with you SHP. This is a league everyone, apparently, is striving to be a part of. I can't believe that anyone with a Claret persuasion gained anything from that; apart from keeping it down to two. The future looks bleak for 'the best league in the world' unless you are backed by multi millionaires at the least. A real sad indictment of what used to be a game.

Routine unfortunately- City have our number like money other team and it showed.

Pope - 8 - couple of smart saves and handled well, no chance with either goal.

Roberts - 6 - actually thought he stuck at Grealish pretty well but his use of the ball isn’t up to scratch in any area of the pitch, and he made a mess of two golden opportunities to create a chance or even score himself.

Taylor - 5 - used the ball nicely but never got to grips with Sterling’s canny positioning high and wide on the right, so ended up close to neither him nor anyone else. Both goals resulted from that and so did several other chances.

Long - 6 - rarely convincing but ultimately let no one down.

Tarkowski - 7 - solid enough individually but I’m not sure the organisation of the defensive unit was what it needed to be today.

Cork - 5 - tidy enough but neither screened the back 4 nor pressed to squeeze up in the first half and way off Gundogan for the second.

Westwood- 5 - better in the second half but offered very little before the break and his instinct to step out of the bank of 5 before the first goal was fatal because it suddenly made KDB McNeil’s man.

Brownhill - 6 - unlucky with the early header and showed more purpose/understanding of his role than most of his colleagues.

Lennon - 6 a few nice touches and one good early cross but gave Cancelo too much space.

McNeil - 5 - no worse than anyone else in that insipid first half but we hadn’t a clue how to deal with Sterling’s position and that of Gundogan and KDB targeting their inside right channel and in not knowing whether to stick or twist, he utterly failed to do either - and didn’t influence either goal when he otherwise might.

Weghorst - 4 - just not a feature on the game and after a lively first few games he seems a bit disillusioned with life leading the line on his own for Burnley. Given he doesn’t run the channels and looks at his best laying the ball up early rather than waiting for support it looks increasingly like he needs a partner going beyond him and without that he’s an ineffective focal point.

Cornet - 5 - clearly given more licence than McNeil to play higher but not much of an influence.

Rodriguez- 6 - added a far better focal point to our attack.

We’ve sort of watched this game before against City, but not quite with this passive a Burnley team. We’ve always struggled against City because unique amongst the top teams, they always keep at least one of their front 3 high and wide as the main source of width, rather than encouraging the wide forwards to attack inside and relying on the full backs for width. The latter we manage better because we can keep the back 4 narrow against the front 3 whilst the wingers manage the overlapping full backs. Against City we’ve previously seen Mahrez play high and wide and cause us problems.

On this occasion it was Sterling, and at no point did we work out how to manage it. If Taylor went to him, it opened up a massive gap between him and Tarkowski; if he didn’t McNeil was caught between playing as a genuinely auxiliary left back or pressing onto Walker.

But this wasn’t helped by the set up, which appeared to involve a genuine, flat, midfield 5. Brownhill appeared to have marginally more freedom to get forwards but when City had the ball it was striking that the 3 central midfielders were flat, so as a result neither applied pressure or filled in the gaps that KDB and Gundogan so clinically exploited. In the second half the solution appeared to be more like what seemed obvious in the first place- Cork dropped deeper, allowing him to fill those inside gaps (almost creating a back 5 at times) and Taylor to get closer to Sterling, giving Cornet more freedom to play higher. By that point though it was far too late and the game had turned into a training session.
