The most important fixture since Orient?

Win and Everton really are in trouble.
Draw which is what we do all to frequently and the pressure remains on us.
Lose and we’re down.

Only a win does it.
A true Orient match.

It’s certainly not too much to say this match could decide our long term future.

It feels like the end of an era,

But a victory, and hope is rekindled

The worry is it has a draw written all over it. The story of our year.

To survive we have to at some point take a gamble.
Draws really don’t do it.
But is SD a gambler?

Beating Plymouth to guarantee we were not relegated back to division 4 was the first most important game since Orient and possibly wont be bettered in the importance stakes. We have had a few more as well and sadly lost some of those.

I was going to say Plymouth.
But even Sheffield utd at Wembley, given our financial position could have been terminal.

So no, nowhere near.

Yeah, I'd say Plymouth in '98 and Wembley in '09 were pivotal moments and changed the direction of the club for years.

Whereas this relegation, it's kind of inevitable sooner or later. Also, if we beat Everton we're still likely to go down. It's a big game, but that's it.

Given the concern many knowledgeable fans have re our finances, relegation brings with it very real dangers.
Thinking we are heading to being a comfortable Championship side may be way of the mark.

Relegation means we are heading to uncharted territories.
Yes with some assets but with potential instability we’ve not experienced for a long time.

For me it’s not quite an Orient game but it could looking back be a very pivotal one.

I think your right about it being pivotal and quite rightly link it to our debt laden club, thinking about it on the long term consequences if ALK use the television money parachute payments .pay off creditors st the detriment of team building we could well plummet so in hindsight although not Orient scale losing this game and all hope of staying up gone we could well be screwed.

Obviously it's important in the grand scheme, but beating Everton alone won't guarantee our survival, as we'll need to win 4 of our last 10 minimum to give us a decent shot at staying above the bottom 3 come the season's end.

Fine winning on Wednesday, but if we then lose the 2 away games we'll likely be no better off, especially if Everton & Watford start picking up some results.

I only hope the players realise the importance of Wednesday, because in any of our previous crunch games this season they've been posted AWOL.

How on earth is it reasonable? A next to meaningless (by that i mean we neither stay up nor go down after it) game against a side who like us may still avoid relegation from the PL Vs a game where our very existence was at risk? Not reasonable. Relegation isn't assured if we lose, so it obviously isn't the most important fixture since Orient. Can't imagine anyone's opinion backing that up. If people want to avoid ridicule, then they shouldn't set themselves up for it. Not that it was my intention to do so...

For years clubs who finished bottom of the old fourth division we’re more or less guaranteed to be re-elected into the Football league. That particular season could have seen the ironic relegation of one of the founding members of the football league being automatically relegated to the Conference.
This would have been historic and catastrophic for Burnley.
My judgement is no, the game against Everton is not the most important fixture since then however but it is right up there as being one of those games to determine our future. For me what shaped our season was the loss to Brighton ( first game of the season) and the manner of our defeat having opened the scoring after 2 minutes.

Anyone who remembers Orient and the atmosphere around the club - the crowd - the town. The common knowledge ASDA had signed a contract to take the Turf if we lost… cannot help but ridicule a match that much as we need to win for moral, it will not relegate us if we don’t or guarantee survival if we do game.

Of course it's a reasonable question.
To be honest, it will take more than beating Everton to get us out of the sh!t we've got in to.

You again miss the point.

Is it the biggest game since arriving in the Premier League? Is a reasonable question
Is it the biggest game since Orient - it isn’t even comparable to the Orient game… ON ANY LEVEL.

Lots of rumours/hearsay stories have come out around the Orient game, but I've never heard that Asda had signed a deal to take the Turf.

You can trust me at the time I had many good sources within the club. That football match is the reason the industrial estate (now opposite the college) happened. The club had no option if Burnley FC were to survive, they were on the move.

It is a reasonable question.

The answer will all depend on the financial ramifications of relegation.

A win doesn't mean safety but a defeat leaves us more or less needing snookers.

As big as the Orient game? No chance but the OP didn't suggest that.

Re: The most important fixture since Orient?

I think it’s reasonable to say that financially staying in the Premier League is important for us, go down and there’s nobody on here or probably at the club who can be certain of our future.
In that sense the Everton match takes on a whole new dimension. Win and we still have a chance of renewing the squad and fighting another day.
Lose and we have no idea about our future.
Relegation might enable us to build a new young vibrant side, but the more likely scenario is a period of chaos when our short term goals clash with our long term interests.

So no it’s not a game with the same consequences as the Orient one, but it looks pivotal to me.

I’d certainly say it’s one of the biggest in Dyches time in my opinion. For me it will be a big indicator of how the future will go under him. If you can’t get the players up for this game when they are on premier league wages, how are you going to get the same players which a lot will be up for the inevitable fight of getting back up next season on less Money.

The Everton game is absolutely huge in out quest to avoid relegation. Win it and by the end of the weekend we could be in 17th. Lose and we really do look doomed to the championship. But the championship really isn’t that bad a place to end up. Orient game it is not.

I guess it depends on your personal interpretation of the finances.

I don’t believe the concern from many is that we will just become a championship club but considerably worse

The most important matches are those that lead to one of two very different destinies. Orient was one of those because if we'd lost we might never have come back. The play-off final was one because had we lost our financial outlook was such that we might never have been able to compete at Championship level for the foreseeable future.

I'm not sure whether we do or don't stay up this season is in the same camp, simply because the nature of gravity is that at some point we will be relegated from the Premier League, and if we don't go down this season it's quite likely to be next season or the one after, particularly given the difficulty of managing the level of fundamental change our squad needs whilst remaining competitive. Even if we survive those seasons, you simply can't keep punching above your natural weight forever.

So in that sense, no game this season is a choice between very different destiny - those that are left just define when whether that destiny arrives now or later. The consequences of relegation, whenever it comes, may well be messy. There may be arguments that this summer is a good time to go down, or bad. But the fundamentals remain the same regardless.

It's a massive game in that the OP is correct if we lose we are down but we all know if we go down reality is some people will lose their employment. Dropping out the top league always reduces all revenue streams into the club, from corporate (they could drop 40%), merchandise, season ticket sales, walk on sales, TV cash etc etc so with that comes cut backs.
So let's hope we take this to the bitter end for the sake of the town and the club.

This is why the club should never have been sold in what was effectively a leveraged buyout. It's like taking out a very large mortgage on a house, while your long term employment prospects look dodgy. In fact, it's worse, because a house won't devalue as quickly as a small, and not so 'fashionable', EPL club being relegated to the Championship.

And yes, Wednesday evening is massive for us. Relegation in a couple of years time wouldn't be so bad if most of the debt had been paid off and the parachute money is then used for rebuilding, but under the current circumstance, not so good.

I agree that's a fair view. I was at the Orient game, as many others on here were and there is very little, if anything to compare. Not that often I agree with N/Castle claret but spot on with this. Of course it's significant to both clubs and their imminent future but that's about it really.

It’s our financial set-up which in my opinion makes it a pivotal game. Not that winning will ensure survival but that losing will send us into a potentially very dark place.
Not sure we are really aware of the economic consequences of relegation.
