The Penalty

Why was it a penalty?

I looked at it on Match of the Day and I saw no contact and Cornet intent on going down - diving. I felt he could have stayed up and perhaps scored.

By the way, Brownhill played the ball out to him - I mention this because he gets criticised for his passing.

Cornet did what we are absolutely useless at, he "won" a penalty, can't remember the last one we actually "won", instead of the one's we usually get.

It should have been a retake too as

1/ Fabianski is miles off his line before the ball had been struck

2/ Encroachment by West Ham players prior to the ball being struck

It's also not my claret tinted lenses in play but also that of a number of West Ham supporters too

They will have their own Claret- tinted glasses on, of course…

Must admit, haven't seen a replay, but didn't the keeper clatter him?

I'm assuming there's some doubt about it now.

If there was no contact, the keeper would have made more of an issue about it, VAR would also have picked this up. As it was he was lucky to stay on the field as you can't say he was "going for the ball"

It doesn’t matter whether it should have been given or not. It was given, and cornet should not have been on penalties.
I don’t know who's decision it was to have cornet on penalties when we had Jay and Wout in the pitch but if it was Jackson then you can see why he has failed as a manger previously.
Surprising out of all the coaching staff Jackson was the one they kept hold of. Very odd.

1st of all Cornet has scored more goals then any other player at the club this season but most importantly there is an agreement between the player's that's been in place for year's and its who ever wins the penalty takes it. I think Wood had scored two in a game a couple of season's back Barnes won and took the penalty and he explained this when asked why Wood didn't take it for his hatrick

Not sure about that. On the replay (MOTD and Sky) it shows Jay holding the ball as the designated penalty taker and he reluctantly allows Cornet to take it from him. Jay would have scored it, we all know that. Hindsight is wonderful isn’t it

How do you know he would have scored it?

Statistically a much better chance of scoring it. You’re right, I didn’t know, but Sod’s law and all that.

It was a pen. It was a red card. Cornet missed. Move on

Almost correct, however, the referee was 100% correct ---move on.

Fabianski received a yellow card but why was that not a red?

The double jeopardy rule - penalty and yellow card is enough of a punishment for a goalkeeper. Personally I’d like to see that rule scrapped as I think it makes the game more interesting. Keepers would no longer be able to risk taking out a player like they can now.

It was deemed by the referee that he made a genuine attempt to get the ball, unlike Collins at Brentford.
Has he made no attempt at getting the ball, a professional foul , he would have been given red

Look again.......he took out Cornets right leg.

I can say with full confidence that this isn’t the case. When Barnes and Wood were our forward pairing I understand it was the agreement between themselves, being two very good penalty takers of roughly equal ability. But there’s not a cat in hell’s chance that if Charlie Taylor, for example, is tripped in the box, that he takes the penalty.

I meant between the forwards

I note that the ‘double jeapardy’ rule did not apply today for Dawson (West Ham again).

Double jeopardy rule only applies if you make an attempt to win the ball. Dawson just pulls him back by his shirt so ref correct to send off
