Most satisfying Burnley victories

As we're reminiscing what are those wins that gave you a real sense of satisfaction?

The couple that immediately spring to my mind are both away wins that set up trips to Wembley.

88 and our 3-1 ET success in the SVT on the dreaded plastic at PNE.

94 and another happy away day when we made the long journey to Plymouth and again won 3-1, when Johnny Francis run them ragged that night after we conceded early.

The 1st denied our "superior" neighbours a final appearance, and the 2nd was particularly pleasing as Plymouth were so certain they'd booked their visit to Wembley after drawing the 1st leg 0-0 at TM, and they even booked their travel if reports are to be believed.

As for matches I actually attended our 2 victories at Ibrox were especially sweet for me to wind up the locals up here, and although the 1st was a narrow 1-0. the 2nd was a comfortable 3-1 romp when Andre bagged a HT.

Reading away in the play-offs. Two top-drawer goals from Paterson and Thompson. Discussing Sheffield Utd at Wembley felt like it was going to be a formality.

The two home wins in the European Cup in season 1960/61 against giants Reims and Hamburg will always live long in the memory. We were such a special team at the time and able to compete against the very best European sides.
I remember Burnley legend Jimmy Robson scoring in the very first minute against Reims and then more than 47,000 watched the game on the Turf against Hamburg.

As a mere nipper these were special days and special memories of our great Club.

Although that dirty **** Hunter crocked Frank, which helped scupper our hopes to get to the FA cup final.

I think there can only be one winner in this category and that would be Leyton Orient.

In terms of pride, I can't think of many better games than we we easily beat Liverpool 2-0 at Turf with 20 per cent possession.

I don't think I'd ever seen a team so organised it was like watching 11 synchronised swimmers in football shorts.

And the geometric lines drawn by TV pundits was something else.

That was the day of the remarkable Paul Fletcher overhead-kick goal. Another special memory.

I suspect for a certain gentleman in the Worsthorne area, it would be the 2-1 win away at Scunthorpe on the last day of the 1999-2000 season ..

We'd stumbled to a 0-3 home defeat to Gillingham five games previously, after which their manager Peter Taylor had shook Stan's hand and said, " Never mind, Stan, you'll get it right eventually ! " This went down as well as you'd expect !! We then won the last four games of the run-in, and this combined with Brian Flynn's Wrexham beating Gillingham 1-0 on the final day, led to Burnley finishing in the 2nd automatic promotion place, with Gillingham 3 points behind !

Legend has it that Stan sat at home on the Sunday morning and wrote a note ...

" Dear Peter, never mind son, you'll get it right eventually .... " ;)

During our Coyle promotion we beat Charlton 2-1 at the Turf. They went 1 up before HT & their keeper proceeded to time waste at every opportunity. Enter Steven Thompson who scored with about 15 mins left, more time wasting from their keeper only for ST to nick a winner in injury time.

Weirdly enough I was thinking of that on Sunday (no idea why it came into my mind) and I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the Wrexham full back who scored the winner v Gillingham and we then signed.

(Mark McGregor - had to Google it in the end)

Any victory, of course, is sweet but just to add a little balance I'll go back to Jan 1962 and a 6-3 victory v Man City with Mc virtually unplayable. A little later on my 14 th birthday in 1966 a 2-0 home win v Liverpool.
Beating Sunderland 2-0 at home in April. 1973 to secure promotion back to the top flight.
In Sep. 1962 I saw us win v Blackburn 2-3, feeling grown up travelling on a coach from Haslingden with my older cousin to Ewood Park. Then there was the 'mauling' of Leeds at home in 1968 5-1 with a very young team and Ralph Coates 'running the show'.
And then there was ......... 🤔🤔 time to stop, I think.

Rochdale 1 - 3 Burnley
Last game in the 4th division promotion season, which was played after the season had finished due to it being postponed once or twice.
Being from Whitworth always a good result beating the Dale (shows how far the club as come) and especially as one tool I knew supported the Dale so to stop them getting into the play off's by beating them was a great end to a great season.
Same tool now supports B'stards and even Dirty Weed's in between also. Tool.

From an exiles point if view (and supporting Burnley fir most of my life in the lower divisions a few that stand out are:

Winning 4:1 away at Southend to clinch promotion.

Beating Spurs 4:1 on the Milk Cup at White Hart Lane.

Wembley win against Stockport.

Charlton away with a 3:0 win to clinch the Championship - and seeing the players celebrating with an inflatable trophy !

Clarets 5 Leeds 1.
Wonderful display by a nucleus of youth team players to destroy the mighty LUFC under that low life Revie.

Away at Leeds in 1974 was special. But Super John Francis at Plymouth eclipses it. Reading away and Martin Paterson wasn’t bad either.
If we win away at Watford and Villa I may be back on this thread with an update.

Satisfying? I remember the 4-1 Win against Derby in 2016 was really satisfying. Mostly due to Derby's ultimate centerback combination.

(even their goal on reflection was incredibly satisfying in terms of pure technique)

Boxing Day 1963. Burnley 6 ManUtd 1. Lochhead 4, Morgan 2.
Burnley 3 Napoli 0
Rovers 1 Burnley 2. Ending the long run after being cruelly denied in the previous 3 meetings.
