Jake Daniels of Blackpool FC

... has come out as the first professional gay footballer since Justin Fashanu. I really hope he gets the support with the football community and I suspect this will be step forward in giving other players the confidence to come out as well.

Blackpool player comes out

Jake Daniels, first player in the UK to come out in 30 years apparently. Only 17, just made his debut.

Good on him, hopefully it will give the strength to many others that I’m sure play in our leagues and feel reluctant to do the same.

Good for him.
Good for football.
Good for others who're still unsure about coming out.

Good for him! Unfortunately you know the dregs of society will have their comments but let's hope if that does happen the lad has plenty of support from fans, his fellow players and staff at Blackpool and any future club he plays for.

A very brave thing to do and he should be supported by everyone for doing it.

Hopefully it encourages others, so we get to the point where it's not a big issue anymore.

That's the spirit.

Why anyone has an issue with this in these enlightened times is beyond me.
Good on the lad, I wish him all the best.

Massive respect for the lad, takes incredible courage to be open and honest in coming out in the football world. Unbelievable he is the first since Justin Fashanu.

I genuinely wish him all the very best for his career.

Good for him.....Hope he has a great career.

Ive been thinking for a while that if I were a Premier League player who happened to be gay I would definitely come out . Yes there would be a few boneheads who would give me some stick but the kudos I would receive from so many people for being the groundbreaker would be huge (as well as securing me a fortune on the chat show circuit!)

Massive respect to him. It’s taken far too long and is a sad indictment of the game, and maybe the perception of players and fans, that others haven’t felt comfortable to do the same.

He’d a 100% be getting a round of applause from me, and I’d assume the vast majority of football fans, If he was turning out for (or against) us any time soon.

It’s definitely something for Blackpool fans to be proud of and get behind.

The behaviour of someone like Evra would make some rethink any decision to come out

It's good that he has the courage to be his true self. And if he does get abuse from knobheads, then it shows what a bunch of cowards they really are. Mind you, I suppose we already know this.

I hate seeing the words he was brave to come out as gay it is disgusting that just being himself is seen as being brave, it isn’t it is plain old honesty. Good on him but nobody should care really straight, gay or whatever shouldn’t matter.

Being Gay

by Penwortham_Claret
I was just reading the other thread regarding Jake Daniels coming out as gay. It shocks me that in 2022 this is such a big deal when in everyday life it wouldn’t even cause a raised eyebrow amongst most. This got me thinking about why it’s such a big deal in football?

The lazy answer is that football is dominated by men but I think the culture has shifted and I doubt this will attract any more negativity that the few ignorant idiots that we see in all walks of life.

That got me to thinking, are there any posters on here who are openly gay? I suppose for all the hours that we spend on here, building friendships in a lot of cases we rarely mention our personal life.

That’s exactly the point, you’d be happy to reveal which town you live in for example and I would guess most would be willing to announced that they are straight. Why is it different?

I am not gay myself but along with 99% of society and as you say in your post wouldn't raise an eyebrow if any friend or family member came out.

In terms of the issues within football, it is the same with racism, in any walk of life there are no issues but when people get into the mobbed up, coked up, drunken state they feel any sort of taunt is acceptable and whilst in most cases this comes from fans, clubs are to blame as well. For example with the Suarez incident a few years ago with Evra, the Liverpool players wore shirts honouring Suarez. If it was a Liverpool fan who did it they'd rightly be banned, but this isn't an issue as I imagine Liverpool will get thousands of people wishing to replace that fan in paying for season tickets. When it is a player worth millions, clubs don't express the same viewpoints.

Also I feel it will be Jake Daniels tag from now within any media outlet. Such as we saw like "Frank Lampard's Derby", it will be "openly gay footballer Jake Daniels" and whilst yes it is brilliant for Jake Daniels to come out as gay and live his life freely and the bravery he has shown in no other job would it be like that. I couldn't imagine sending an e-mail to my boss at work saying "our openly gay accountant John Smith has confirmed payroll for this month" but in sport, media and the celebrity world it is a normal thing which is wrong.

If someone wants to ' come out' as it is put they will decide when to do this

Not at all, I couldn’t care less. I’m interested if people are willing to be open about it in the same way that most would be if the question was raised in a non football social situation

Would you deem it intrusive enough to call me out if I asked if you had kids or was married?

Its only an issue to the same type of people who make Nazi salutes at football matches.

It’s a real shame that it’s still ‘taboo’ as far as football goes, in fact it’s insane. It’s not something even mentioned in literally any other walk of life. The aforementioned type of people are the ones that would be happily abusing anyone that had come out on the football field.

Working for a PLC I’ve worked with a lot of people that are ‘out’ and participated in a lot of round tables about the topic in a corporate environment. I still can’t believe how the sport is so restricted to it that players don’t feel comfortable being open about it.

I’m not really sure why anyone needs to know. I suppose if it makes that person feel better or they want to seek approval fair enough. It does seem a bit a bit like making a grand announcement that you are Vegan or something. Why does anyone need to know if someone is heterosexual, bisexual or trans ? It shouldn’t be anyone else’s business. I don’t need to know or want to know if our footballers are gay or something else I couldn’t care less and just want them to be good at football.

I remember when Andre Gray's disgusting Twitter posts came to light, there was one particular poster (who still posts regularly now) who made some downright awful comments.

I can't imagine this board would be a friendly place for anybody who came out as gay.

Nothing against anyone that’s gay like absolutely crack on.

However professional footy is a kinda different atmosphere than the average work place.

The changing room is basically all men ba a physio or two and such is the nature of the industry/job/sport you’re going to have a close knit group.

Boys being boys (especially the younger ones) are going to have silly nights out stories and all the bravado that comes with it.

I can see how some players wouldn’t necessarily open up the same way to a team mate in knowledge that they were gay or whatever.

Is this discriminatory? Or is it just as is.

Opinions welcomed
