Weghorst miss
Weghorst miss
I'm a new and pretty unrecognised poster (no offence taken haha) but I've been pretty critical of Weghorst in general and don't rate him.
It's pretty easy to say he should have buried it but the defender flung himself at the ball and got a good break.
Would have been amazing if it went in obviously but I don't massively blame him.

Re: Weghorst miss
I think he’s been pretty useless since he arrived bar a couple of games, but he couldn’t have done more I don’t think bar hitting the target which is what he did. He did lift it a bit too rather than it being a daisy cutter, which is all I’d have hoped for.
Just got to say great block really.

Need to see it back but I think the point is 1. A slightly more mobile striker gets to the ball quicker to finish it (imagine Ings for example) 2. Could he have elevated his shot so it went into the top half of the net, foreseeing the sliding Mings?
Re: Weghorst miss
Got to give Mungs the benefit in that one was a great block ... just as we are praising Pope

Re: Weghorst miss
Couldn’t really have done anything more. Fantastic challenge by Mings. Weghorst started the move off with some decent hold up play, something we were seriously lacking at times with Barnes and in particular Cornet. He’s gone through a rocky patch and the goals aren’t coming for him, but I’m hoping we see him line up for us in the PL next season with a new manager and a full pre-season.

Re: Weghorst miss
A sign of a player adapting to the league. He just needs it to be natural to him to lift the shot or drill it low. Instead he stroked it like Barnes stroked the penalty.
In Germany the defender doesn’t get that, which is why Wout was a tad casual. This is a step up. But he’ll get there.

He lifted that all he could seeing it back. There simply wasn't the space to get anymore elevation due to a superb piece of defending.

Not sure on this take. The question is, could he have done more to ensure it DID go in? For example, if he lifts it into the top corner, it’s a goal because Mings doesn’t get there.

This. People who actually understand football know that he is adapting to the PL. problem we have is we need him to adapt quicker. If we stay up, I fully expect to see the best of wout next seasonCrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 10:52 pmA sign of a player adapting to the league. Top scorer in the Bundesliga behind Lewandowski over the past 4/5 years.
Parachuted into a team, low on confidence, playing very little football and scrapping for their lives. And not playing to his strengths either.
Can he do more? Of course. And should we stay up and play more football, on the deck and under a new manager, then that will be time to properly judge.
Calling him useless is just moronic.

Easy with hindsight to say he should've fake shot johan cruyff turned and no look 360'd it into the net. He did everything right, hit the target and 9 times out of 10 it's a goal, great defending from Mings.

If he had a time machine he would have trapped it, waited for Mings to dive, then flicked it up and headed it at the underside of the crossbar with the ball bouncing just over the goal line.

Certainly wasn't useless away at Palace and Brighton, home to Spurs, Man United. Scored at West Ham too. He's had poor performances sure, to say he's been useless is your typical b**locks though.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 10:59 pmWhy don’t we just stop making excuses and call a spade a spade.

Great piece of proper football all round. Good ball, good save, good pass, good block.
it looks like he should have scored, and he would have scored, but for a fantastic block.
That's fine, it's part of the game. It's as nature intended.
It's not like not getting a penalty for the exact same reason you conceded a penalty the game before, or anything.

So good in them performances he’s been dropped for a player you constantly say is past it in Barnes.
He has been useless and any other opinion is just claret tinted specs. Top earning players don’t get dropped (especially here) unless they are useless.

You just sense it's that split-second mental agility at this level and he's still adjusting to that. Would have backed Barnes to score in the same situation

I said months ago I'd like to see Barnes given a run in the side and a new contract??? We haven't seen Barnes given a real run in the team for a long time, kinda impossible to say he's past it until he was given a run.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 11:03 pmSo good in them performances he’s been dropped for a player you constantly say is past it in Barnes.

I think it's obvious why he's been dropped, the team was set up to defend deep and hit it long, suits Barnes' game more than Wout.
I'm as objective as anyone on here so the claret tinted specs is funny. He's had some really good performances, some not so good.

Re: Weghorst miss
The thing I really hope we start doing when evaluating Wout is stopping with the Bundesliga evidence as the reason he is not the problem and we/the players/our tactics/the manager are.
Judge him on what he is producing here, for us, in this league. Anything else is utterly irrelevant. Paul Stewart was playing for England and Liverpool a couple of years before he came to Burnley - equally pointless saying “Yeah but…” back then considering what he was ‘offering’ us.
This thread shouldn’t be an overall Weghorst bashing thing though, he’s had at least two of them already and did nothing wrong (imo) tonight. He won a couple of duels, did a couple of clearances and did everything he possibly could with the chance he got. Sometimes you just have to hand it to the defender.

Take 5 mins to look at our team statistics this year.
Lowest possession percentage- 38%
Pass accuracy- 69%
Cross accuracy- 21%
Goals from open play (not set pieces)- 18 (second lowest)
Goals from counter attacks- 1 (joint lowest)
I could go on.
To say Weghorst has been useless, and at the same time completely ignore the circumstances he has come into and how badly we have been playing, is disingenuous and you know it is.

Nah, it’s a good finish. He could go high, he could keep it right on the deck, but he focused on going for the corner and getting clean contact which is all you can ask.
Mings just did miraculously, unfortunately.

Re: Weghorst miss
He's been fine in the majority of games, certainly an upgrade on what Wood was offering in the same team. I'm fine with him squaring the ball to Vydra to win the Wolves game instead of scoring himself. If you wanna just count productivity in stats and return, he's still our most effective striker goals/assists to minutes played. His hold up and energy means he offers more than just goals/assists though.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 11:11 pmYour not being objective though, you were raving about him when signed and now he’s turning out to be a poor signing your constantly defending him.

A world class striker would have dummied it and then chipped into an empty net - we’re £100m short so we got the honest hard working striker whose effort was blocked by outstanding defending.
Did brilliantly to get into that position in the first place, excellent effort from Roberts too

Are we playing to his strengths? Not remotely.
I AM judging him on what he is producing here, and taking into account the backdrop of a relegation scrap, a side low on confidence playing god awful football, it’s not remotely surprising he is finding it tough.
Out of interest, what were you expecting him to do, bearing in mind just how poor we are in possession?
