It’s been coming for two or three seasons. The lack of turnover in the squad, quality incomings and quite probably, some fresh ideas.

Just got stale didn't it. Postponements looked to be a factor when we fell about four games behind everyone but ultimately we got back into it and it was in our hands today. Agree you'd have to go further back than this season but was always going to inevitably happen one year.

Brighton 1st match of the season, losing after coasting showed we had lost something.

Lack of investment has caught up with us. No wonder Dyche was p!ssed off.

Wasn’t lack of investment just poor investment

Gibson, Vydra and Hart will have cost a fair bit.

Just didn’t work out, a club of this size with the budget we have just can’t have as many passengers as we did.

Walters and Wells on the books from the previous season as well.

Should have targeted potential lower down the league

Can’t really argue with that, you have to speculate to accumulate, but BFC finishing 7th was probably the moment that the owners thought best time to think about selling.

Exactly! and those squandered points in the early weeks of the season would have been so precious now wouldn't they, and we threw away several leads in the first couple of months, which in previous seasons rarely happened.

Season after season we’ve started really slowly, which I think in part must be due to our very late transfer business. Dyche regularly talked of the importance of a good pre season - that’s great but not if most of your incomings don’t have it.

We scored 34 goals in 38 league games this season.

What happened in previous seasons led ultimately to that damming statistic.

Got what we deserved. It was an absolutely dreadful season and I’m glad it’s over. The club feels miles away from the one I’ve known since I first watched them in the 80’s. I’m sick of feeling miserable about something that should being giving me joy.

I’ll look forward to a season with no VAR, big club bias and a load of defeats.

Not really. We didn't hire a Technical Director to not spend money on transfers.

Sadly, we hired the worst performing Technical Director in the history of the profession. He succeeded in stretching our budget by signing veterans for little money, signed no youngsters of any real note for the Academy, and dedicated the bulk of our transfer money towards the daft pursuit of players that were never going to sign for us.

That led to a constant build up of money in our dry powder store that made the leveraged buy out possible.

Poor recruitment got us to this point, pure and simple. A complete inability to identify players within our budget, who were likely to be sold by their existing clubs, that were likely to sign up with us and who were suited to the successful system we employed. It wasn't the framework that failed us it was our recruitments teams inability to source players that could re-invigorate that system and build on it with a bit more quality.

Improving our recruitment was the right idea, but we hired the wrong bloke to mastermind it. He proceeded to hire a bunch of other failures to support him and he may or may not have moved the recruitment decision making away from Dyche, leading to the creation of a toxic environment that seemed to revolve around recruitment issues.

A team can't afford to have a single bad recruitment window and under Rigg we had several in succession.

One harsh reality about the Prem though is that regardless of how much you spend every team bar a select few will get relegated.

We've had a far better run than most and next season you'll see a couple of established sides dropping unless it's Leeds. Unless all the promoted come straight back down.

Southampton look in real danger and they are seen as a stable club

Summer 2018, despite other posters on here justifying poor transfer window after poor transfer window, others saw it for what it was, a slow motion car crash. I hope Garlick never steps foot in the town again.

right, so lack if investment then. The reasons behind it are irrelevant - we didn't sign quality players end of story

It is obviously more than this, but three games stand out for me where we were just too negative.

Norwich H
Newcastle A
Watford H
Norwich A

We got a total of 2 points from those matches and with a bit more desire and willingness to attack, I still think we could've comfortably picked 6 up as a minimum.

Last season, we only stayed up because of wins at some very impressive (but m/t) stadiums of the huge teams, as we really struggled against the teams in and around us

This season that has continued, and we've struggled to change those draws into wins

Essentially, we've got what we've deserved as we have been poor to dreadful for about three season sadly

Just not good enough for the premier league, the number of poor displays this season has eventually cost us our place in it.
How many of our regular first team would start in a better than average team.... Pope...Tarks.....Mee?. our midfield would struggle in div2.
Sorry to see it happen, and really do feel gutted ,but hey as clarets we pick ourselves up and go again. We do need a rebuild for sure but at what cost?
The support was fantastic today, your great and deserve better than what this team has given you today....LIMP...PASSIONLESS...DOWN WITH A WHIMPER
you did all you could to lift them, but they were very poor again......Once a claret ,then a claret for life....i feel your pain, but we all know you will still love Burnley tomorrow and next season.....DOWN BUT NOT BROKEN

Someone renown in these parts talked often of fine margins. There’s the particularly galling dichotomy here at the strategic level through poor or lacking investment, and the tactical level of not turning up against Norwich, twice.

Fine margins indeed

Lack of investment over the past 3 years has cost us. Even one decent signing per window who could have gone into the first team could have made the different. Instead we’ve watched an ageing and injury prone squad with nothing been spent while we waited for a takeover to go through.

Nail on the head, we treated the Europa qualifying as though it was an hinderance when the reality is for most of our players it would be there only taste of European football. I got speaking to someone pretty high up and he was moaning about the ground changes we would have had to make had we qualified for the group stages.

A club like ours should go all out in any competition we enter with our strongest side.

This sums it up.
This is what Dyche alluded to when he said they’d lost their Edge. It was the same lot listening to the same message. If we’d have moved a few in and out we might have been ok.

I've seen suggestions from players that it was refusing to adapt our game and play our strongest team in Europe sealed our fate. Players fought to finish 7th, then were rewarded by being benched in Europe. It's one thing doing that for cup matches (which also ****** me off) and quite something else doing it in Europe.

I am to be honest. More competitive and exciting. However, I’m really worried about the clubs future. Financially we’re up the creek with no paddle. I can see a Sunderland/Portsmouth style fall.

One thing I’ll say about today, the enjoyment the geordies took in relegating us will live with me forever, absolutely no need at the end from a large number of their supporters, I know I’d not do that when I can see a set of fans hurting, when’s there’s no rivalry between us
