Double international, football and cricket, Andy Goram has been diagnosed with terminal oesophagal cancer. Sadly this has spread to various other organs.
A super keeper at his best. My wishes are with him and his family at this dreadful news.

That's absolutely shocking news for Andy Goram. I remember him as a young teenager back in the 1970's vying for the position of goalkeeper for 'Bury Boys' with another lad from St Gabriel's in Bury. Andy attended Seedfield High School, close to the old Bury General Hospital. Of course he went on to have a wonderful career. Still a relatively young man. Stay strong, Andy.

Sure he used to feature on the cover of an early 80s BFC programme, Oldham playing in orange and Billy Hamilton challenging him....

Devastating news for him.

Just checked and I was getting them mixed up. It's one of the Futchers in orange with Billy on the cover.

I remember 2 Andy Gorams chant when he had mental health problems. Not the most sensitive of chants but I admit it did make me smile.

Very sad news. He looks about 70 years old in that photo. Best wishes to him for a relatively comfortable last chapter in his life.
Top Goalkeeper.

I've had this cancer, twice.
The first time in 2009 I was cured by surgery.
The second time in 2017 I was cured by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
On neither occasion had it spread.
I see that Andy Goram ignored the symptoms until it was too late.
The lesson to be learnt is this: if you feel food sticking in your gullet, get yourself to your GP immediately.

Isn't it known as the silent assassin? Most people don't learn until its too late but is it down to heartburn and changing the lining of the esophagus?

I'm not sure what causes it, but you're right, the symptoms can remain hidden until it has spread beyond the oesophagus. The survival rate is increasing, but it's still quite low compared to other cancers.

As far as I'm aware, which is limited knowledge to be honest, it's mostly due to heartburn/acid reflux changing the cells/lining of the esophagus. Even heartburn can go unnoticed. Like a slight bit of chest pain and that's it. But, and again this isn't necessarily correct, my understanding is eating red meat and spicy food whilst suffering from heartburn/acid reflux isn't great to eat. I'm probably completely wrong it's just something I looked at years ago because my friend died of it with no time to fight it.

Thoughts with Andy and his family at this distressing time, hope he can at least enjoy his final months in peace.

Been a tough year for Rangers stalwarts, Walter Smith, Jimmy Bell, and now Andy Goram.

Read about this yesterday,Goram was a fantastic keeper...so so sad to see him looking a shell of his former self
Cancer really is a b@stard.
Enjoy your last days Andy, don't think you will ever be forgotten up here, especially by the Rangers fans.

Horrendous illness and I wouldn't wish it on anyone

That said, I would argue the good character assessment. Known round Glasgow for his suspect behaviours and his overtly sectarian opinions, plus by his own proud admission, racial slurs when playing against Van Hooijdonk, I don't think we can rewrite his character just because he is ill

My Dad had cancer of the oesophagus in about 1982 and had to have surgery. I remember how it all started when my Mum and Dad came round our house for a meal and my Dad said he had trouble swallowing his meal. I can picture it now.

Unfortunately the cancer returned in about 1984 and I had the hardest and most difficult task that I have ever had to do in my life when I had to tell my Dad that the cancer had returned.

My Dad died in 1986.

Sorry I got thinking of my Dad in my post just now and didn't say that I hope that Andy Goram stays strong and somehow pulls through.

His weight loss however is reminiscent of what happened to my Dad.

When I say "character" regarding a sportsman, I tend to judge them only from the character they show on the field of play.
Their lives, opinions and general behaviour are of little or no interest to me.

Good to know you hold your sportsmen to no moral standard whatsoever, as long as you're OK :?

Bloody hell, life can really kick you when you're down at times.

I really hope that he finds some inner peace and that his final days are as restful
and as pain free as is humanly possible. Stay strong Andy, and thoughts are with you,
your family and your friends.

Same goes to anyone else suffering at the hands of this dreadful disease, or any other for that matter.
