was he approached? Did he say "nope, I want to play for Norway?" Does the England set-up not hear of him?

He's Norwegian so assume he wanted to play for Norway.

Apparently his first words were “I’m Norwegian”, after sampling the delights of Leeds.

He's Norwegian!!!
We've no more "missed out" on him than we've missed out on Lionel Messi.

Gareth wouldn’t play him anyway. He’d have to play second fiddle to Mason Mount.

Simple I'd have thought. Regards himself as Norweigen. Presume his mother is also Norweigen.

He wasn't but even if he had been I doubt he'd think of himself as being "English".

He would have qualified to play for England I imagine. So it’s a valid question. Messi on the other hand would not have.

If he was born in Leeds the surely he wouldn't be eligible for England only Yaaarkshire they are an independent nation like the Scousers are they not?

But if he'd come to live here and had decided to apply for a British passport and identified specifically as 'English' then he could have done?
Much like he could have opted to play for Spain.
He didn't though. Mainly because he's Argentinian.
And Haaland is Norwegian.

Surely someone born in England is eligible to play for England regardless of the nationality of his parents? He’d have to WANT to of course….
In a world that allows Tony Cascarino to play for the Republic of Ireland based on him once attending a stag do in Dublin surely Haaland would have had the option of playing for the country of his birth?
Fair play to the fella tho, considering himself Norwegian. As pointed out earlier, he’d struggle to get Kane out of the side. Not because he isn’t good enough, because GS treats Kane like SD used to treat Ashley.

Being born in Britian would not make a person eligible to be British. Not sure how he would have been eligible in any event.

Wasn’t the deal with Cascarino’s eligibility due it being found that his mother was adopted and his Irish grandfather wasn’t actually a blood relation. I think the Irish FA said afterwards that was sufficient but who knows, that could’ve been a face saving exercise.
Either way it’s entirely different to Haarland. Born to Norwegian parents who moved back to their home town in Norway when he was 3 or 4, where he then grew up. Regardless of place of birth he’s Norwegian.
The two are not the same.

He could apply to for English citizenship anytime he likes because he was born here, much like I can apply for Irish citizenship anytime I want due to where I was born.

This is the thing with international sport, you can pretty much play for who you want now. And that's no bad thing. Haaland isn't 100% Norwegian, or English or German but none of us are really.
It's more like supporting your club side. You can pick one where you were born, who your dad supports, where you grew up. Or just pick one with the best chance of winning.

He regards himself as Norwegian. So he's Norweigan. Irrespective of where he was born. My cousin was born in Saudi Arabia when my uncle was working in the oil industry there for a couple of years. She doesnt regard herself as Saudi Arabian so she's not Saudi Arabian.

Haaland will no doubt be glad he opted for Norway ahead of England. Southgate would have ruined him.

Riiiiight….. so it’s all about how you regard yourself. I genuinely didn’t know that. I suppose that’s where the “if a dog is born in a stable, that doesn’t make it a horse” analogy comes from.
I’m going to be Northern Irish from now on… always had an affinity with the iron.

It's just drivel.
I was born in N.Ireland, left when I was 1 ish and I've never been back.
I'm entitled to Irish citizenship, but I don't consider myself Irish, never have done, never will and that's the part Bobinho is struggling with.
Someone can be born somewhere and have absolutely no feelings towards the place and don't consider themselves as being from that country, especially when they leave at a very young age, aged 3 in Haaland's case so he's no memories of living here.

My OP didn't question his affinity. He had the technicality to play for England. Gareth Southgate is talking drivel at the link above. You can say to the boy "OK, you consider yourself Norwegian, but being born in England entitles you to play for England, and you can make that decision all the way up to being awarded your first senior cap. Your measure is one of affinity vs possibilities...."
Basically the England set-up didn't follow him and therefore not court him well enough

Don't think it's drivel really. He was living in Norway and playing in their national setup from U15 level up to the under 21s and presumably quite happy with it. I imagine at that level it doesn't make much sense to be flying 14 year olds in from Norway for the England youth team.
He was still at Salzburg when he got his first senior cap an I can't imagine many people thought England should be naming a 19 year-old from the Austrian Bundesliga in the full squad at that time. There's not really an obvious point that we should have tried to hijack his international career.

Very complicated. The kardashians aren't from hobbiton as it doesn't exist, but apparently they are still hobbits.
