For years it was all pretty standard.
Stand at roadside lollipop down by their side, pedestrian approaches and waits, lollipop persons scans the road and raises the lollipop to warn oncoming traffic before making their way to the middle of the road lollipop raised, waves pedestrian across road, thanks waiting traffic and returns to the kerbside.
Now it seams the norm is.
Stand at roadside and either spend 30 seconds talking to the pedestrians with no indication of crossing (ie. Raising lollipop and scanning the road) then just step out lollipop still unraised into oncoming traffic until finally raising the lollipop ( if they can muster the energy) and waving across pedestrian still talking and laughing with them. Or once spotting a pedestrian approach set off to the middle of the road (again not following the lollipop raising routine) with the pedestrian still 5m from the crossing then continue to stand in the middle of the road for minutes on end as new pedestrians slowly approach arround the corner.

Has lollipop school closed and you only need a 30min zoom course to earn your pop now, our local lollipops are atrocious. 🤬🤬
I always had respect for them from growing up as a kid on my way to school to getting my first car but lately they just leave me with grumpy old man syndrome 🤬🤣
And don’t even get me started on the silly dancing ones!!!

Raise the matter with the school. A Lollipop person should be decisive in movement and not keep the drivers guessing their next move.

The change I’ve noticed is Crossing patrols used to help people cross once they reached the curb side, now crossing attendants seem to think if pedestrians on the way to crossing, have priority… meaning they can be holding up traffic for people who were still in the playground chatting when the motorist is stopped, rather than stop the traffic twice, wasting drivers time unnecessarily.

Jeeez you grumpy old gets

It’s women, children and generally elderly crossing a busy road, that’s deemed to be a bit dangerous.

We had a legendary lollypop lady who have no quarter
A car failed to slow down narrowly missing her
She hurled abuse at driver who stopped
She then using the lollypop as an axe slammed in down on the roof of the mini, offering to give the driver more of the same.Wisely he drove off sharpish

Not a matter of grumpy old gets - I have elderly parents who cannot get up after falling, when I get a call, they can be on the floor until I can travel from ā€˜Accrington to Rossendale - I do not appreciate being held up so conversations can be concluded before pedestrians deem to cross. How many other people are held up on emergency missions? How many are then travelling faster to make up the lost time? I know I have remind myself getting stopped for speeding will cost more time than the patrol… but how many drivers don’t and travel onwards less safely for the rest of the journey.

Anyone seen getting fractious or impatient at a school crossing should get a driving ban and be made to write out "I am a cock" 100 times.

It's amazing how everyone in a car is always on a dire mission of mercy rather than just going to Asda.

Just encountered one but I anticipated and stopped as she was preparing to enter the road.

The vehicle coming the other way despite being a good 30 yards away didn't start slowing so the said LL leapt into the oncoming lane brandishing her pole like a lance!

Not saying every car is… but that is the point, who knows why people are travelling or what their circumstances? I use the car at peak times ONLY when I have too, I’m sure I am not alone.

If you're at a school crossing and your that impatient then maybe you should consider using a bus because you obviously shouldn't be driving a car. Some drivers think the world revolves around them and guess what? It doesn't.

I'm sure all right-minded people sympathise with your plight elwa.
Nonetheless it's fatuous to suggest that we put the safety of our young schoolchildren on hold to accommodate the zillion to one chance that someone in your unfortunate predicament may be passing in that very short time space..and that the few seconds you may have to wait could be the difference between life and death.

All lollipop people are trained (or should be) in how to respond to the appearance of an emergency vehicle BTW.

No where did I say it was? It has happened on one occasion… the occasion I was reffering to. My point is I will not be lone in having extremely vulnerable but independent parents. No one but the driver knows their circumstances.

There seems to be a disconnect on here between someone providing an example of why it can be frustrating and other posters drawing the conclusion I am merely being self obsessed. Clearly people don’t want to actually think about any other possible circumstance but their own view.

Again another smart arse who cannot wait to jump in.

Nobody is jumping in, you raised the subject.... So once you were held up, for what, 20 seconds? And you are amazed people are questioning your outburst?
Road rage is a far greater problem than lollipop people not doing their job as quick as you would like.

Quite agree. The reference was made to point out that people chatting some way down a path leading to the crossing is not justification for holding up the traffic. On the occasion I am referring to the pedestrians were not even approaching the crossing - they were chatting, and continued to ignore the crossing even once they emerged onto the roadside, while they decided who was going which way and who was crossing… eventually.

Stickers, you seem to offer a sweeping generalisation that all 'lollipop people' operate this way?
They are employed on busy roads and assist more vulnerable members of the population across those roads to schools.
It's a pretty tough job due to the arrogance of a number of some motorists. I'm not aware that they are equipped with body cams but they should be, in order that police could persue abusive motorists/instances of dangerous driving through the Courts.

Can't believe people complaining about being made to wait a minute or 2 at pedestrian crossings because they deem their trip more important than someone crossing the road safely, who's to say the person crossing isn't going to help an elderly relative or make an important appointment. You're more likely to be held up longer by a learner driver dithering or stalling at a junction, do you have the same problem with them, get over yourself let the person cross and carry on with your trip important or not. To start a post on a forum about waiting at a crossing is sad and you really need to have a word with yourself. whats next level crossings, red lights because believe it or not you spend more time at those waiting than you do at a pedestrian crossings on any given journey unless you're a weirdo that hang around schools in your car.
