Vincent Kompany interview part 2

I see the club has posted part 2 of the interview with the new gaffer. Does anybody else find it weird how they've done this? For starters, the second part doesn't seem to include a video. I'm sure there's a marketing strategy behind it but I'm not too keen on the drip feeding of content.

Anyway, here's the link: https://www.burnleyfootballclub.com/con ... w-part-two

Would you go as far as to say its a PR disaster?

As for the interview, really refreshing comments from VK throughout, particularly about wanting fans to be buzzing about going to games.

Video is there on the link, just scroll to the bottom.

Have to say, I'm yet to hear anything from Kompany that isn't positive. Yeah its all words at the moment yadda yadda but I'm really pleased we've got him.

It wasn't there when it was first published. I've refreshed and can now see it, cheers! Fair play, it's actually quite a long interview as well -- far shorter than the teaser of part one!

That should say far longer* than the teaser of part one. Having a bit of a nightmare. Shame edit feature is only available for a few minutes!

Much more of an insight from that second video. Going to be a very different style moving forward that’s for sure. Puts a lot of emphasis on attacking play and entertainment.

No idea how it will all pan out but I’m certainly looking forward to it.

In a way, us being in the championship might be a blessing in disguise when we are going for a complete refresh of style and a lot of player turnover.

Not saying it's going to be easy, far from it, but I think the fans will see what he's trying to do and stick with it. I think this would have been a lot harder in the prem as we spend most of the time without the ball.

I just wish they'd stop using the word "BOSS" this word is taken from the slave trade yet we do all the anti racist stuff (which we should).
I truly find it annoying that the club do not seem to understand this word and use it again after I'd pointed it out to them once and they changed the post accordingly.

Comes across very well. Notable how often he mentions entertaining the fans, I suspect after the more pragmatic approach of Dyche this was a big part of the board's remit.

I like what he had to say about derby matches:

"Derby matches are the best. I think you play football to win games but the type of games you win matter. Usually what happens is there’s a lot of playing it down on these occasions, but I prefer to build it up.

"That’s what those games are there for – high risk and high reward. Whatever happens, you go again, but it’s still worth giving it the appropriate importance it has just because when you do win, it feels better.

Comes across as highly intelligent, grounded and ready to get to work. Very impressed. Hoping this will rub off onto players like Collins - being coached by an all time great defender must surely be a huge positive.

He was a very impressive man on the pitch he comes across as a very impressive man off the pitch, especially impressed with what he said about derby games “why play it down I prefer to build it up, it makes winning them feel better”, very refreshing view on it and it’s the view of a winner which he certainly is.

Vincent already looks au fait with the local inclinations and comfortable slipping the odd bon mot casually into a sentence:

"But whatever we want to achieve in the future will be based on vert local foundations."

Come on you Greens!

I enjoyed this interview. As people have said, he comes across as intelligent, a student of the game, thoughtful and ambitious, all without resorting to cliches or sound bites, actually speaks with honesty (which is something our former manager claimed to do but rarely did -an observation not a criticism)

The style of football clearly will change -that could go either way but it will be more exciting to watch and if it works- will definitely encourage more fans back to watch the matches.
One thing I am excited to see is the amount of movement off the ball-we were that wedded to the ‘framework’ under Dyche that options off the ball were painfully low -hopefully Kompany can find the balance between a strong shape out of possession but more freedom in it.

Excellent interview. I've been excited by Vincent all along, but after seeing some of the dressing room antics I wasn't so sure of his intelligence.

But this guy is highly intelligent and speaks from the heart. I think he will be a great match for us.

Boss is Dutch in origin and is a bastardization of the Dutch "base." Its use was a uniquely American way of avoiding the word "master," which had quickly become associated with slavery by the mid-19th century. Can I suggest that you contact CBS, the New York Times, Miriam Webster dictionary and all of the etymology sites on the internet who all appear to have got this wrong too.

I didn’t know that and so I looked it up. Originally from the Dutch baas. My understanding though, is that it was a word used to avoid the word master which did have slave connotations.
It was therefore a word used to identify a manager etc but not in the slave trade.
Of course I might have misunderstood the explanation.

Debate on the use of the word boss but what I always found ridiculous was Dyche being referred to as gaffer in interviews by people who didn’t work for him.

As for this Kompany interview, he comes over really, really well I think. He will rightly be judged on results at the end of the day but this is an exciting appointment and his early words have been positive and encouraging.

Having learnt this today... I've thrown out my Hugo tee shirt, all my Springsteen collection will have to go, and as for the rather large African handbag seller who's just approached me in a Spanish bar, saying.... How you doing boss... Iam not sure what conversation to have with him

Funny the word ‘Boss’. Yes it is NOW associated with slavery. The word BOSS was an Americanism based on the Dutch ‘base’ to differentiate between slave ‘masters’ and commercial ‘bosses.’

I found it quite interesting that Kompany was none committal on targets for the season. Highlighting that he wants fans to enjoy the football.

Seems to contrast Pace, who in his hiring post stated:

““Vincent is a proven leader and I’ve been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley Football Club, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the Club back to the Premier League.”

If he can translate the words into action then it will be great. Not wishing to be disrespectful to Dyche, who I liked and did an amazing job for us, I never really thought he totally understood the club and the fans. When he arrived it felt a bit like he was on a mission to convert the peasants. What Kompamy has said already would seem to show a greater degree of empathy. We do need to give him the time though. As he said things won’t be perfect overnight

If a black musician stomps down on a Boss wah pedal, is he symbolically beating on his former masters, or is it because it's the only way to be sure you've turned the bloody thing off?

Comes across and really intelligent, positive and could be a great motivator. I'm sort of glad he had his time at Amderlecht and got his feet wet before hand rather then going straight from playing to managing us. It will have taken some of the rawness away and will have given him some great experience even though the championship is a different proposition.

Love the way he wants the playing style to connect with the fans. It's going to be the polar opposite of what we've had. Even though the polar opposite has made us successful in a way. Also think being in the championship will help his style and hopes of playing attacking football far easier to do. I'm even more excited about his appointment now. The style will be a positive for the players also.

Can't wait to see this new journey.

I found it funny when he said "I want to make it a place that on a Sunday with your kids you want to be there" - that is probably the Manchester City speaking from within him as they're always on Super Sunday :D

I thought it was a good interview. It's easy to make the usual statements of "We want promotion this season" etc, but he was more keen to emphasise style of play, long term ambition and wanting to make Burnley fans enjoy going to Turf Moor. You'd think if he can achieve those aims, then success on the pitch will have occurred in parallel.

I thought it was a stunningly good interview. Most managers trot out the same old tired lines and I thought he was the complete opposite. Don't worry, I have a few more superlatives I can use if he manages to translate it to the pitch !

Decent interview that. After the devastation of last season, I can now say I’m looking forward to the championship. Some good football, hopefully more wins and no VAR. It will be nice to look at the fixtures and really believe we can pick up points in every game as opposed to the odd few. COYC!!
