A couple of months ago my case of brand new clothes was lost at the start of my holiday and never recovered. I then spent 3 days wearing the same clothes, then having to buy some more.
A tip I received from someone is useful for anyone who is unfortunate to lose theirs. Put your name and telephone number in a clear plastic sleeve in your case/hold-all. If it's lost, to identify the owner, luggage handlers will open the cases, looking for the owners identity. It could save you a lot of hassle.

Yes a good tip. If you’re a couple it’s good to split packing some of your clothes in both cases, that’s of course hoping both cases don’t get lost.

Why not just put name, contact number and email address on an external label?

My best tip is travel light and put nothing in the hold.

Find accommodation that as public washing machine or an apartment that as one and then wash every other day.

When we go lanzarote for 2-3 weeks, we take a 10kilo case each buy our toiletries at the airport or local spa shop and use the on site industrial washer that takes 30 minutes, then hang out to dry.

Works a treat and eliminates any check-in bags for the the hold and waiting for bags at destination

I increasingly travel with just 10kg hand luggage and get toiletries at airport. Miles easier.

Did this on the lads' cycling week in Mallorca last week, no problem in getting enough stuff in a 10 kg locker bag including bike pedals. I was amazed they were passed through security but there you go.

I’ve always put a label inside the case. External labels can be ripped off during the ‘handling’ process

Don't bother with cases. Simple wear all your clothes on top of each other. (An idea I stole from Joey on Friends). It makes for an uncomfortable flight but at least you know you everything will arrive.

Better still, choose a naturist holiday and no clothes will be required or indeed allowed.

As for labels, everyone should be actively discouraged from showing their home address on the
outside of their luggage until the home journey. This will prevent any scumbags from knowing you're not
at home and popping round to rob you blind whilst you're away. TOP TIP THERE.

We always interchange items of luggage and always put a holiday and a home address label,
together with dates,, inside the cases.

Don't bother wearing all your clothes on top of each other, just become a nudist. It makes for an uncomfortable flight with everyone staring at you but at least you know you wont lose any cases or have to spend every other day of your holiday in a laundrette doing your washing

Currently in that situation right now, arrived in Romania on Saturday, no luggage. Filled in a formed at the airport who said they shall deliver it to my apartment yesterday morning, still waiting for it to arrive.

Simply take one change of clothes and plenty of deodorant.

I've never had the misfortune to lose a case travelling, but a mate did once and loved it.
That's because his insurance allowed him to spend a few hundred quid on new clothes.

Does insurance not cover that these days?

P.S. don't forget the wellies and velcro gloves if you venture out for a walk.

Just done 10 days Croatia/Slovenia with a backpack, easy peasy.
Wore one pair of trainers for duration. Pack spare jeans, 10Ts, 5 jocks n socks, deodorant.
Job done, hotels provide the toiletries.
Any accidents buy local.

Top tip

Smear your cases with feaces before checking in your luggage .Even the most desperate baggage handler will give this a wide berth, hurling onto the carousel with gusto , and perhaps accompanied by cheeky oath or two .

Buy an apple AirTag for £27. Can track exactly where your luggage is and the battery last for 12 months.

Has anyone tried posting their clothes to a hotel a few days in advance of travelling?

I did, but they got lost.

Some idiot once took my bag at Hong Kong airport because it was the same.

He then wanted me to exchange bags with him in central HK because he assumed I'd have taken his after I couldn't find mine...

Baffling!

Although I’m insured, I haven’t yet claimed, in the hope Tui Paphos would get in touch and tell me they’ve located them. After losing a lot of weight, I needed new clothes. Sadly I never got the chance to wear any of them. I’m lucky I only lost my birding tripod, as my telescope was in my hand luggage, or it would’ve been a very expensive loss.
Re Tui complaints and lost luggage depts, they’re the pits, never replying to messages left on their website, for a call back.

We did a Danube Cruise sailing from Nuremberg on the Main Canal to Kelheim then The Danube to (just south of) Bucharest.

A couple from Birmingham had flown in to Munich via Amsterdam with KLM and their Bags were still in Amsterdam. They were given some cash to buy a few clothes until their bags joined the ship (rather difficult as the ship had to sail) 2 days later still no bags (by this time we were in Regensburg and we heard their bags were now in Nuremberg) their bags were finally waiting for us in Vienna .

The staff on the Emerald Sun cruise ship were fantastic, laundering their clothes each night and leaving them outside their cabin before breakfast each morning.

There was a great cheer at Breakfast when they arrived in wearing different clothes and did a twirl...

Ssorry to hear your plight Alan!We lost luggage for our first cruise round the med.It was the time of the liquid bombs at Heathrow.

The mrs had spent hundreds on new gear,for the cruise.we were told that it might be at the next docking place.Every day we were up early scanning the quayside, as we docked in different ports! There was luggage waiting ,but never ours!We spent the days shopping for new clothes instead of sight seeing.Total disaster it was ...guess what,2 weeks after returning home,knock on the door,and a courier was there with 1 suitcase,full of the mrs clothes.Totaly sodden,apparently it had fallen off the buggy at manchester airport, before our transfer to Heathrow!!Ps we always put our name/address/phone no, on a A4 sheet within a waterproof sleeve...learnt that one years ago!!!!

That works unless it gets ripped off. Bags go through all sorts in an airport and it is easy for a label to get trapped and ripped off.
Best thing is to do both, definitely put something inside your case.

So after landing last Saturday, I am finally on the way to the airport to collect my luggage, 6 days later! At least I actually have it and it isn't lost forever.

So, I presume that you wear about 4 sets of clothes again and again for 3 weeks?

Either way, surely waiting for bags at the destination airport takes less time than doing your laundry every few days. The last few times I’ve travelled my bags have been ready to collect by the time I get through the passport queue.

Just keep a set of clothing in your second home.

Saves a lot of hassle and means the staff/maids/au pairs don't have to constantly pack/unpack your suitcases when you get back.

Taking just hand luggage helps avoid bag drops at both airports on departure and transfers on arrival as well as not needing to collect cases at the other end - you might not have had to wait on the last point but many people have and do.

Well yes, of course some people wait for luggage, I have done too. I will also just travel with hand luggage when going away for a weekend etc. My point is that doing laundry every few days on a three week holiday isn’t going to save time, as any time saved and more will be spent in a laundrette.

Fair enough, but travelling light and putting nothing in the hold isn’t really a practical suggestion for the vast majority of travellers. 7-10 days? Maybe if travelling without kids. But your 10kg Ryanair allowance won’t go very far once you’ve put a beach towel in there and there’ll be a lot of faffing around buying toiletries (not ideal if you can’t take your favourite aftershave!) and doing laundry that surely negates the reason for doing it.

Anyway, it will work for some people, but not the vast majority.

Just spent 10 days away with hand luggage, travelling between hotels and apartments (with washing machine, just in case) no problem.

When I go away on golfing holidays, I take my older stuff, and wear them at the course, then bin them, saves packing on the return home

Loads of people take just hand luggage. With Ryanair you get 10kg plus another bag. I buy toiletries airside after security. 7 and 10 days with 10kg - 15kg per person is simple. I don't do laundry (because 10kg - 15kg per person is plenty for 7-10 days) but I'm sure some people do and just use the hotel laundry service and also get their beach towels from the same place.

The poster who suggested taking just hand luggage was a good suggestion for many people.

No, my main point was that taking hand luggage was a good suggestion for many by the poster who made it, and it's not just about collecting your luggage at the other end which is what you suggested (there have been huge problems at bag drop which don't exist if you just have hand luggage).I don't think you understand hotel laundry services, which is fine because you won't need them taking hand luggage for 7-10 days.
