Jay Rod and Barnes
Are these going to be surplus to requirements, I just read an interview with Kompany where he must have been asked about playing staff and retaining players. He said the club needed to do what it felt right and he will be judged on what happens after his appointment but understands why the club offered existing players contracts, he then said he was really glad to have kept Corky, but no mention of Jay and Barnes. I think we can all see these guys are going to look odd in a Kompany team, not saying it won't work, but don't seem to fit, could we see either leave?

I would be happy to see them both on the bench when the season starts, which woul mean we are upgrading across the squad.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
We're not going to buy a whole new starting XI so Kompany's going to have to work with some of what we already have. If they can't play in his ideal system, he'll need to tweak it.
If he wants shut of them, we'll need to buy at least three forwards. I'd say that's very unlikely.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
In those 2 players Kompany has a means to an end. They are both very experienced and will offer the right insight into our club for those new players coming in. They are required if anything for the transitional period from where we were to where Kompany is hoping to take us.

Jay is a very intelligent and technical player. He’ll do well this season. His problem has been staying fit.

33 in July and not a good age to have issues with niggling injuries. I suspect that the style of play from Kompany will require very high fitness levels and a lot of mobility. Not how I see Jay or Barnes for that matter but we will soon find out.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Jay is a very technical player with a good footballing brain, he has a wide range of different abilities he can bring to the team.
He will have plenty to add to the games, and he will will be great for the youngsters to learn off both footballing wise and regards the town and its people.
Barnes triggered his own extension didn't he?
I can't see there being much need for him in a VK side abilities wise, and he's a bit of a class clown whilst VK is a very serious and intelligent bloke.
I don't think Barnes has it in him this season to get double figures, so shouldn't really be regularly used.
Possibly 4th choice and odd cup games Possibly is only real hope.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Barnes move on. A loan or cheap fee.
Let's hope all the players get a fair crack of the whip in pre season though.
Everyone should start with a clean sheet now.

I said at the time that Barnes triggered a new contract that Kompany would ship him out on loan, and nothing that has happened since has changed my mind.
Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
I think Jay and Ashley will play a part for us this season. I just hope this thread doesn’t turn into another one slagging off our own players!

Barnes was surplus last year and I think he’s got lucky with another contract . He’s 4th choice I guess . Jay Rod very different ,as IF ( and it’s a huge if) he can stay fit he could be very useful indeed in the champ with a bit of service .

Agreed BigVince and this wasn't meant as an exercise in slaggibg off our own players. Regardless their levels now they have both been great servants for the club and are part of the most successful era in my lifetime.
I mean it wasn't that long ago Barnes was being linked with a move to Chelsea

Both will have their part to play, but whether either will be 1st choice I have my doubts, however it's a long season, and we will need everyone in the squad to contribute if we're to enjoy a successful season.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Barnes should have been sacked over the drink driving, not sure if we could have done that, but he should have at least been shipped out. Was it due to Dyche being to loyal ? It has certainly bit us on the backside wage wise at least.
Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
The fact that Barnes is still at the club shows how poor our transfer dealings were the last few years of the Dyche/Garlick era.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Both players have something to offer, they can also pass on their experience to the younger players and they'll be good lads to have in the dressing room during a transitional season.
If they don't get much game time, with a bit of luck it will be because they can't dislodge others ahead of them who're doing a good job.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Jay particularly I could see being very useful in the championship.
He’s actually a much much more intelligent player than some on here seem to give him credit for. His movement and natural footballing brain may help him adapt as his age starts to show a bit.
He knows the division and I could see him getting a decent goal return if he does play regularly.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
I reckon Bashley will do nicely in the Championship where referees will be less likely to be biased against him on 'historical grounds'/small club syndrome. He 'buys' fouls, agreed, but that is permitted under the rules and he certainly is able to both take punishment and dish it out but he also has an eye for goal and now, hopefully injury free, could be a capable back-up forward for us.
Can't see him getting another deal next summer though.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Both players are 20 goals a season in the Championship.
Do not underestimate the ability of either. We are very lucky to have them still. The others are unproven. Hopefully good enough too.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
I'd say that's rather optimistic about Barnes being a 20 goal man in the Championship. The most he's ever scored in a season is 18.
In league 1
In 2010-11.
Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
I’d be shocked if they scored 20 combined. Barnes never been close to 20 in the championship and Jay looks half the player he was even 2 years ago

I am more confident that Jay will have a successful season in the Championship than Barnes. Can see Barnes wanting game time and going out on loan in Jan
Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Hi Bill. Did the prolific Jimmy Greaves have any pace? Geoff Hurst? Teddy Sherringham? Andy Lochead? Charlie Austin? Speed is not always an essential requirement for a goal scorer. Anticipation and reading the game are big assets.
Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Unless we plan to buy another three strikers they certainly aren’t surplus to requirements.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Really unfortunate that Barnes was able to trigger his own extension. Feels like he belongs to a jurassic era now passed.
Can see Jay Rod contributing a bit, not as a regular though.
We need two new forwards as a minimum. Really don't get some on here obsession with Vydra, really flatters to deceive. Wrong age now, we need to shift him on.

Jay should be a useful asset at this level, but he won't be bagging 20 a season.
Vydra is still undergoing his recovery, and we still don't know whether he's been offered an extension or not.
Assuming Cornet and Weghorst both move on, we'll need at least 1 new striker, perhaps Richardson could step up, but he's had his own injury problems in the past year.

Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
I think both Barnes and Jay Rod added to the squad at the end of last year. And the manager who many regarded as overseeing a resurgence in form preferred Barnes to Weghorst.
As other have said, I can't see either staying fit through a 46 game campaign. It will be interesting to see if they can still physically compete in the Championship in their 30s.

And that's the big question, both have increasingly suffered injuries, and naturally due to their age it takes longer to shake off the niggles then it did a few years ago.ClaretPete001 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:03 amI think both Barnes and Jay Rod added to the squad at the end of last year. Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
Well it definitely applies to Westwood as he's out for a while with his present injury, and how long it'll take for him to get back up to match fitness is anyone's guess after such a long enforced lay-off.ClaretPete001 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:15 amIt is, and I think it equally applies to Westwood and Cork.
Cork I think will be fine in the Championship with the younger legs around him.
Re: Jay Rod and Barnes
As it stands they’re the only 2 senior strikers we have, with Vydra now being out of contract, and also injured. Effectively we need to sign 2 more.
Signing 2 strikers that are going to hit the ground running could prove an expensive proposition. It sounds like we could be on the verge of signing Muleka fairly cheaply , but there’s no guarantee he’ll settle in quickly. Therefore I think both of them could have a big part to play for us this season.

I don't think Westwood will feature much next year after missing pre-season and several months up to Christmas.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:19 amWell it definitely applies to Westwood as he's out for a while with his present injury, and how long it'll take for him to get back up to match fitness is anyone's guess after such a long enforced lay-off.

Cork has to transition to a different kind of player because his game was based upon covering the most years in the PL.
In the end, we had several opportunities to pull away from relegation most notably after the Dyche run through February and March and then after Jackson's initial 4 game winning run.
It was notable that on both occasions what followed was a pretty dramatic loss of form losing to fairly ordinary PL sides.
Why that was I don't know but I suspect that it was an inability to sustain the high levels of performance that was a feature of the squad a couple of years ago.
So, I'm less sure.

I’m glad we have Jay but think Barnes would be gone if it was down to the club. He was injured last season so he may well turn out to be an asset next season.
