Just been on the phone on talksport saying he only found out he’d been released when he saw the clubs retained list on Twitter. Very strange if true.

If that’s the case then it is shocking from the club. It doesn’t matter what he has or hasn’t done at Burnley at all.

What was he expecting a new two year contract

No but he could have expected some common decency.

Possibly the worst £1 million pound we ever spent. Not Dyche’s fault though in this case as that’s probably all Garlick would let him have. We probably needed to spend another £14 million at the time but that now probably sits in a former Chairman’s back pocket. Not the right way to inform a player but he can hardly have been surprised he was surplus to requirements.

Garlick signed him I believe, not Dyche. I’m certain he wasn’t surprised but I hope he was informed properly.

I’d be amazed if he thought beforehand it was going to be any different. Having said that it’s very poor from the club but not surprising.

Surely that can’t be true, but if it is that is a poor do all round from our club.

So his agent hadn't been in touch with the club to find out what was happening? If that's the case, which I doubt by the way, I'd be firing my agent ASAP.
I think Dale might be telling a few porkies

His contract was running out and he hadn't been offered a new one .....

Just common sense, do you think he's just been sat back not doing anything knowing his contract is running out, do you really think his agent hasn't asked the question? Nobody is that thick just to sit there twiddling their thumbs, knowing they could be out of work in a few weeks/months.... Could they?

Exactly.. He just wants a bit of publicity for himself to set himself up for his next move

As he says, he knew he wasn’t getting a contract. However, clearly it is poor form not to have a quick word with those being released just to confirm what they already knew/suspected.
It’s not a major issue and doesn’t need to turn into a 5 page thread, but it doesn’t reflect well on the club.

If anything it sounds like he back tracks half way through having realised he’s said something controversial.
Also it’s a great point about his agent.
Complete none story.

I'm pretty sure months and months ago that he had his agent touting him about for a new club, what did he expect after his time here? A new deal?
The club don't have to inform him his contract expires on that date if they didn't offer him a new one then you know your going.
How comes no other player has said the same story we released a lot?
Or maybe the staff just forgot he was even there it wouldn't be difficult with his contribution

Agreed. If he
knew he wasnt getting a new deal then somebody must've officially told him that already, why does he need it reiterating?

We never ,really got much value did we,Injuries Off field Antics, etc, for 1 Million, never worked out for Club and Player, which We all thought would happen, dont know why we bothered signing him,no surprise, just a stop gap, waste of time from the start.

If that is true it’s because Dyche wouldn’t agree to anyone else! Stephens was a player that Dyche always wanted.

Oh cry me a river. So you’re telling me his agent hadn’t been in dialogue with the club and received word that his contract wouldn’t be renewed? Surely that should be his main job.
He’s produced nothing during his time with the club, other than a drink drive charge, so I’m not entirely certain that’s common decency he’s deserving of in the first place. He’s getting his name out there for a new club. God help them.

Anyone who represented us so poorly and infrequently, with any brain, would have known he was going. I have a feeling SD may have defended to keep him after his drink driving ban. After the precedence set by Barnes the club had no other choice but not to dismiss him. When SD went its possible AP and the senior BFC team were not to fussed about following protocol, and may not have dotted the I's and crossed the T's and not officially advised him

No doubt about as much proof as you have to substantiate that DS was telling the truth; though given that it isn't in dispute that DS had apparently already been told that he wasn't going to get getting a new contract, my guess too would be that it's DS who's telling the porkies.

There are the usual quota of ridiculous comments on here.
He may have known he wasn't going to get a new contract his point was that no one officially told him because there was poor dialogue from the club.
You would expect in a professional context for someone from the club to inform of his contract situation, thank him for his services and wish him well even if they think he had performed poorly.
Seems a weird thing to lie about on national radio.
