Three pin plug connect to 12v battery

Post by Foulthrow » Tue Jul 12, 2022 7:42 pm

I’m after a lead that connects a 12v battery to a device with a three pin plug. I thought this would be easy to find but no matter what combination of words I Google nothing comes up that looks even remotely what I’m after!!!

Could any of you good people help me out?

I need crocodile clips on one end of the lead to connect to the battery and a connector at the other end in which to put a three pin plug.

Any help gratefully received! :)

Easy enough to construct your own but you're a bit stuffed if your device requires 240 volts?

Perhaps you are thinking of an "inverter" to turn 12 volts DC to 230 volts AC

Thanks for suggestion but that doesn’t seem to be what I’m after. It’s nothing fancy, simply a lead, crocodile clips at one end and a socket to attach a three pin plug.

But surely anything with a 3 pin plug is 240 volts not 12 🤔

There is no lead for a 12v battery that connects a socket for a 3 pin plug (assuming you are talking about a domestic 240 volt 3 pin plug (aka 13 amp)

Then why not cut off the 3-pin plug and connect crocodile clips to that cable? The again, if it is 3-cables in said plug, what're you going to do with the third one?

If you definitely want 12V out to a normal 13A UK 3 prong plug just buy a short 13Amp extension lead, cut the 13A plug off the end and attach the croc clips to the blue and brown wires of the striped back lead. You can then plug in your 3 pin plug to the socket.

Many years ago i worked in a motorbike shop at weekends and a chap once came in with a slack handful of 6V bulbs requesting "ones like that but in 12V" when I enquired as to why he told me that he was "beefing up the lights on my moped by changing to 12V" I think I knew the answer before I even asked the question 'How?' And as expected, he was simply changing all the bulbs. Perhaps this is another one, or maybe the same one forty years on? Nothing connected directly to a 12V DC requires three wires

Why not just connect one wire to the live and the other to the neutral in the plug?

I doubt you’ll get what you want I’m afraid. A 3 pin plug is to connect an appliance to a power supply. If I’m reading it right you are on about connecting a power supply to an appliance via a plug but the plug is connected to a battery then plugged into the appliance? That’s something you will need to rig up yourself.

Also a 12v circuit didn’t require a Live-Neutral-Earth arrangement. It works with a Live-Ground arrangement which a 3 pin plug won’t give you without a imagination.

Let's be honest, the way this is going there's no way an earth wire is going to be involved.

I am no electrician so not giving direct advise.
However, caravans, motor homes and narrow boats run two systems of 12 and 240 volts. Ask someone who knows how to wire them up. That might get you the right answer.

I'd get in touch with them. I'd be very surprised if it's a battery to 3 pin plug direct lead.

Ok so the battery there comes with charger pack right?

All the step down voltage transformation/attenuation will be done in the transformer of the charger pack

Then you simply take the anode and cathode of the charger pack and connect it to the battery.

Take pictures of the battery and the charger pack/plug

Looks to me like it can be mains powered (240v) or used with a portable battery pack.

In that case, you would only need to charge the battery pack up to use it which you could presumably do at home or on site.

That would be my take on it as well. Looks like a battery charger in the bag. The thingamajig ( thrower) needs a BNC coupling lead from battery ( croc clips at one end?) to the DC motor on the thrower - wonder if BNC coupler is built into the battery charger so can be used when unplugged from the 240V ac mains.

This is what I suggest too.

Often you can get a copy of the manual from somewhere, or maybe there's a cricket forum where you can ask this.

I would think as the battery pack is meant for the Pacemaker everything should be there in the pack.

My best guess is that the mains plug is attached to the battery charger. The bowling machine is r battery powered?

Looking at the pics I'd suggest that you have to charge the battery using a car charger*, plugged into the mains.
Then connect the crocodile clips from the adaptor to the now charged battery, and then connect the adaptor to the bowling machine.

*This may be done via whatever else is in the bag that you can't see from the photo.

They are 240volt machines and plug straight into the mains.

If you don't have a mains power supply available it can be used in conjunction with a 12 volt (car) battery
connected to an inverter to convert the 12 volts to 240 volts. The inverter must be a pure sign wave one
with a power output rating of 600 watts minimum. It might well be that the power pack that you have shown in
your 2nd link includes a correct type of inverter looking at the photograph. In which case, simply connect the
two clips to the correct poles of the battery and then plug the machine into the inverter as you would with a normal
wall socket. The machine is then connected to a 240 volt supply and away you go.

If you don't have an inverter, then here is an example of one you need to buy to get up and running.
Like anything else, you can pay up to £200 or more for one depending on the power rating and the various
features it has. The one in the link is simply an idea of what you can buy, and with it having a power output
of 900W, there is some spare capacity.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LVYUAN-Inverte ... 83&sr=8-11

I hope you find this useful, and good luck with it.

If you get fed up with it, I'll give you £50 for it for my 2 grandsons !!!!!

Bit of googling :
The Paceman 176 feature a variety of power sources including a standard UK mains supply (220-240V) which is fitted with a UK regulation 3-pin plug or battery kit for up to 2 hours of wireless action.
So, it is direct mains 240V powered or, can be powered from a 18Ah battery- which was shown in the kit. Given that the likely use of the Paceman i.e. a sports hall ( no easy access to 240V mains ) or outside on a field which would require a long 240V mains power lead from maybe a club house- which is far from ideal:
  • cable trip hazard
  • 240V cable running across potentially wet/damp ground
  • and the "flinger" ( momentum) is simply mounted on a tripod

I'd be tempted to just use the battery to power the thing and charge it as/when required.
