I don’t think it’s Cornet who we needs to decide to stay at Burnley.

I think it refers to the chairman.
But if there is a release clause and it gets triggered the decision is Max's.

Chances of him staying seem close to zero.

Get that - we all know the financials but we also know the gamble.
If Max could put 15 + in the back of the sack and we could sign a striker for under £5 mill. Lose one of Taylor or Brownhill, how would that sit?

I thought the release clause was now void? If not it seems odd that it’s not been met as there are seemingly a few interested parties?

Oh he would be fantastic. I wish, wish we could get him to stay at all costs. We've undersold three of our players and most fans know it. Now the club has to try to ease the pain and convince Maxwel to stay with us.

It would sit brilliantly with me to hold onto Cornet for a season and maybe negotiate a lower release clause next summer. Doesn’t look like it’s going to happen though and looks very much like we need to sell him to fund incoming, of which we’re still a good few short.

Looks like the release clause is only valid if someone pays the full amount up front. Both Everton and Newcastle are said to be reluctant to do this for FFP reasons.

Yep that’s another theory been put out there by Nixon last week. Seems to be some mixed reports.

I guess it could mean that an interested club would only find out about such clause in the event that they approach the club or table an offer. It would prevent the player’s agent from touting him out. Only going off what Nixon wrote though so no idea if there’s any truth in it. Would seem a strange thing to fabricate.

Will be an interesting one if that turns out to be the case. Seems fraught with difficulty to enforce such a breach because not sure how it could be determines beyond reasonable doing where the information came from especially is this age when leaks are commonplace.

Convinced it's all to do with FFP and the release fee requiring upfront payment to be triggered. Guess it's a case of who blinks first.

Nixon gets a lot right but that is utter, utter nonsense - why on earth would a player sign a contract with a clause like that? Knowing a club employee could, the next day, leak it to the press to render it void?

Obviously not in the current circumstances but that aside he would've definitely played as a forward in VK's system

Not disagreeing that it may be nonsense. But I think the assertion was that it was void because Cornet’s agent had leaked it, not just anyone. Guess it would be very hard to ever prove or enforce, but in a way no different to a NDA.

I could see Cornet playing as a forward in the new system. Picture the role that Costelloe took up on the right, and imagine Cornet doing the same but off the left side coming into the middle. Cornet and Maatsen down the left would be absolutely terrifying for Championship sides.
That said, he will surely leave the club. We can't afford him (if rumours of him not having a relegation wage reduction are true) and we need the money he will bring in. It needs sorting.

Lose one of Taylor or brownhill, we might as well lose max cos their both vital cogs, brownhill was superb last night and will put some big performances in throughout the season, Taylor also put a big shift in also and he will be just as vital. And the striker we need to go after right now is lucas juao, and keep max, we'd rip it up.

Seen it reported a lot that the 17.5 has to be paid upfront, this is why no one can afford it.

I thought that Costelloe was played on the right because Maatsen is so good up the left.
Obviously i could be totally wrong

I read somewhere that Max is only interested in going to a team in Europe. If true then only West Ham fit the bill. No one outside England could afford his release clause, and those few that can are fishing in far bigger ponds.
West Ham are a funny club, they can pay a lot more than that for players, but I assume Max is just a back up plan, should their preferred option fall through. Let's hope they get their main target, it might just lead to Max thinking the Stay Put option is better in the long run.

Whole idea of Maatsen having so much space down the left is having an inside floating 10 like Bastien was. Cornet played most of his Lyon career in that exact role Costelloe played on the right, cutting in onto his left foot, it’s something we sadly never tried in the Prem. Anyway, I’m accepted he’s off anyway there’s no doubt it my mind it will happen.

There'd still be an inside 10, there'd just be Cornet as well starting from the left, moving into the middle dragging defenders in, creating space for Maatsen to attack.
Pipe dream though.

I think MC seems happy to stay and just wants to play.
Think there is something with Pace maybe wanting to sell which is bonkers given that we’ve already brought in £50 million. Maxwel Cornet could genuinely be one of the best ever championship players…
That game last night has put it into perspective. Yes Huddersfield we’re poor but we looked pretty good with a very average looking side out.

I'm pretty sure that the payment terms of a transfer fee don't have any impact on FFP though.

& the rest CW sale alone pretty much pays for this seasons incomings with change & that’s without even going into the wages saved, it must be 1 hell of an loan interest rate to be constantly scratting about looking to sell, save & scrimp.

Because the transfer fee is spread over the period of the player's contract for profit and loss purposes. So if they paid £20m and gave him a 5 year contract the charge for each year would be £4m.
Edit - and I think FFP looks at accounting losses, not cash flow

Think he does but Cornet wouldn't have put the physical effort in that Barnes did. It was very high tempo stuff from all of the outfield players and that is one attribute that Cornet doesn't possess. Barnes isn't the answer but temporarily at least he is able to bring other players into the game. Again not a strength of Cornet.

He must have watched that last night and felt a tingling desire to be part of that. Then again he’ll see he’ll be playing in the Premier League, probably earning excess off 75k a week so we’re up against it

Todays press says Everton have agreed personal terms but not a fee with Burnley.
Later, Newcastle have made a bid to pay more money but over time, owing to FFP.
It seems certain that yet another Prem quality asset will be sold, to solve the chairman's financial needs, no matter what.

Yes but if a club can't pay that fee, then we don't have to release the player.
