Just rewatching the game...again.
I read a couple of comments suggesting that there might be an option to buy on Maatsen, was that just wishful thinking???
What a player.

I suspect they'd want a hell of a sight more than we'd be prepared/able to stump up.
Be great if we could get him, though.

I didn't know much about him to be honest when we signed him. We were in the car on the way to Shrewsbury when it was confirmed and I don't think the other three in the car knew much more than I did. However, I've since read quite a bit about his year at Coventry and their reaction to him after forty league appearances was of a player they would have desperately liked back, similar to how we'd have wanted Gary Cahill back in the following year after his loan at Burnley.
I've now seen him play once and how impressive was he? I can't imagine, if he continues like that, he'd be a player we'd be able to sign on a permanent deal.

For those who think we'll be priced out of signing Maatsen permanently, it''s worth noting he's only contracted until 2024 at Chelsea, so if he impresses this season, and we make a PL return, he shouldn't be out of our budget with only 12 months on his contract.
Wages might be a different story, but I wouldn't completely rule out him being snapped up on a perm deal next summer if things go well.
Of course the other potential problem is if he keeps playing like Friday, then other clubs will also be interested.
Let's just enjoy him well he's here, and what will be will be.

I am adamant that he’s is going to sign if we are promoted

Winning promotion would change things - but then the price would increase. Some of the Premier League fees now are frightening. Chelsea have just agreed a £20 million deal for Villa's Carney Chukwuemeka. The lad's only 18.

Yes that is truly extortionate (however I do suspect they have signed a top talent there).

Also worth bearing in mind that Chelsea look like they are signing Cucurella from Brighton so with him and Chilwell as LWB options, there doesn't seem to be much of a future there for Maatsen.

And just to think it's not that long since that we wanted Cucurella

And Chelsea still have an unhappy Alonso on their books too.
The resources and depth of squad clubs like City and Chelsea have is ridiculous - it cannot be good for football when you have so many good players who cannot even get a look in.
The list of players who have been on the books at Chelsea who have never kicked a ball for them and then end up as big players at other teams is incredible.
Gallagher is back at Chelsea - fantastic season at Palace after a fantastic season at West Brom. He’s broke into the full England team too last season. But how much game time is he going to get if he stays at Chelsea ? And if he gets very little surely he will go backwards whilst he stays there.

The lad looks an excellent athlete and reminds me of a left sided Reece James when he was at Wigan. I thinks it's also only fair to give an awful lot of credit to Charlie for covering him when he foraged forward.

Yes, that would be a big factor too, it's a double edged sword in situations like this.
Like you say, just make the most of him and hope he can help us over the line.

Well we have had players on loan , and simply not used them enough for whatever reason.
Maatsen is a wonderful prospect who will do well and even if he was with us for one season we will have done well out of the arrangement.
My Chelsea contacts think he is a fantastic. They said use him or lose him!

This lad will be worth £50m+ in the not too distant future.
Unbelievable talent.

I commented at the game that he reminded me of Reece James. The lad seemed to ooze quality.

No chance he would have walked into a Dyche side he would have been sat on the bench for months until he sulked back to London

Hell of a lot of ifs in this scenario, but wingbacks are going to be crucial to our play this season. I see the two wingback and two holding midfield positions as being foundational, the positions around which the entire system revolves, much like how Dyche's system had its foundations in the two centre halves and the target man. Far too early to overthink this, I reckon, but
if we're promoted Maatsen will be playing a huge part in it, and in that instance it would be worth breaking our transfer record for him if he's available.
