The problems with not owning your own ground.

Shameful for early August.

It's dreadful but it is now owned by Wasps and they are just tenants

Yep Wasps own that stadium, it's there ground.

if Coventry don't like it, they can always ask to stay on Birmingham's couch again..

Never seen an August pitch like that, anywhere!
Nematodes?

That pitch has had 67 games of Rugby 7's on it in three days, which only finished on Sunday evening !
As others have said, it's currently owned by Wasps RUFC, although they're going through a few financial problems at the moment ...

It might look poor but as long as it's flat it should be OK and with some good work - seeding, water, lights - it should be back to good condition.

Some years ago a Football League groundsman (at Reading I think) used the wrong weedkiller a couple of weeks before the start of the season and killed the grass. I guess he used a total weedkiller, that kills everything, as opposed to a selective weedkiller, that kills non grass plants.

He was sacked which sounds the obvious decision. However, unless he'd made such a catastrophic mistake before, he would surely be the one person who would never repeat such an error.

And it happens still. Whilst trying to find a link to something on this I saw other occasions on a golf course and a school.

It was Murrayfield that had the big problem with Nematodes, around 2013.
Eventually, the SRU replaced the whole pitch with a hybrid one similar to Turf Moor's, a Desso Grassmaster

Not a massive problem with today's technology. Overseed the centre circle and top dress, small amount of irrigation, put the lighting rig over it and hey presto, 100% coverage in 7-10 days.

They are having a pitch inspection before tomorrows game to see if the game can go ahead.

They are going to do a pitch inspection due to players safety, I think so the match might be off. Some on Twitter saying they will get a points deduction even though it was out of their hands.

Is it still a 3-0 defeat?

Not really their fault

It’s not their ground and I’m assuming it was Wasps, and not CCFC decision to allow the Commonwealth Rugby 7 games to be played there

It isn't actually their fault so not sure they will be deducted points.

You could argue it is their fault, since they could easily have anticipated this and requested an Away fixture this weekend to follow on from the Commonwealth Games which is a prestigious one off event.

The commonwealth games could've been taken into consideration when arranging the fixtures in all fairness.

Coventry could've played away games for their first few ones...

Exactly my point, but did Coventry identify this issue in advance and request this?
Assuming they didn't then they are not blameless.

Blackpool and Liverpool the last two that I remember playing the first month of the season away because the ground just wasn’t ready. Surely there’s more. They should’ve just request their first few games away.

Ridiculous that a Championship club can't stage their opening game

Coventry are due to host Bristol City in a Carabao Cup game on Wednesday, but that fixture must be in severe doubt.

I feel for the supporters who've made plans to travel to this game, who then see it called off at short notice.

I wonder if Coventry have any input into the maintenance of the pitch? Possibly not so it's a difficult situation.

Playing rugby on football pitches wrecks them
Reading suffered when London Irish churned up their pitch and Wembley suffers with the nonsense of playing American football on it

They don't.

If you read the BBC article I linked it says that the ground owners make contracts with users and their contract with Coventry didn't originally include the Rotherham match as the Commonwealth games organisers had bought exclusive use up to August 14th. Coventry asked if it could be fitted in the schedule and this is the consequence.

It seems odd that Coventry City did not have some contract with the stadium owners but that's apparently how it was. Whether the earlier start this season for the Qatar World Cup has anything to do with it is an interesting question.

I actually don’t see why they can’t or shouldn’t be docked points. The comment from Doddy, Coventry's CEO that playing fixtures away as “not an option” is at odds with the fact that the stadium is under tenancy until August 14th.

Someone is not being entirely truthful

I understand both Aston Villa and Birmingham City were initially approached to host the Rugby 7's, but declined ....

Surely if Coventry had said to the EFL, " Can we have our first 3 games away from home, because we're helping out the Commonwealth Games ? " they would have agreed to that request ? Or was it a case of Coventry needing a game to get some cash-flow running through the Club ?

It's not their pitch, and also I don't think they have any money.
The games should have been switched.

You're right, he wouldn't repeat the error, but you need to set an example. You can't have other staff seeing that you're allowed to make a catastrophic error and get away with it or they'll drop their standards.

Surely can’t be far off points docking now.

On another note, I’ll repeat that we should go and chuck 10-15m on their table for Gyorekes. Forget Churlinov and others, this is the guy who we need and must surely be fed up with that situation.

It is a Rugby Ground ! It is 100% owned by Wasps RFC, and has been since November 2014 ... The grounds biggest ever attendance of 32,019 was for the Wasps v Leicester Premiership game in 2015, it has never sold out for a Football game.

The ground was initially owned 50% by Coventry City Council & the Higgs Charitable Trust. The football Club were tenants from 2005 until 2013, when the Club and their owners ( SISU Capital ) were sued for non-payment of Rent. Coventry then effectively went into administration, whilst playing Sixfields, points deductions followed but eventually they went back to the stadium between 2014-19, before ground sharing at Birmingham City, prior to them agreeing a new deal to return for the start of last season.
