Cucurrella - £62m

Chelsea have lashed out £62m on Cucurrella. I remember seeing him play a few years ago for Eibar and he looked a decent player. But I never thought a club would pay that much (especially post-Covid) on a full-back. Gets forward well but one assist last season for Brighton and ten in 100 La Liga games.
Brighton are literally quids in. £47m profit in 12 months.

As much as I hate to say it,Brighton at the moment seem to be getting together a good set up....making money hand over fist on transfers...a lovely new ground ..and an up and coming young manager....b@stards!

I said last summer he's a top top player and I'd be very surprised if he went to Burnley or Brighton. Turns out he signed for Brighton.

Brighton owe millions to the owner and this will help them stay inside any financial rules

Must be one of the highest fees paid for a full-back.

I don't think Brighton need any help on staying inside the financial rules at the moment considering the tens of millions ££££'s of revenue they are getting in from transfer fees at the moment.
Wasn't that long ago people on here were scoffing at Brighton around some of their transfer dealings yet they seem to have made a pretty good job of building a young squad with strong saleable assets

He played 35 games for Brighton last season. So his value went up by 1.3 million for every game he played in the Premier League.

Ben White - £50 million for an average PL defender who is unlikely to become an England regular.

Ben White is a lot better than average and I reckon he'll easily pick up 20+ England caps over the course of his career

Brighton seem to be getting it right now. 80m in player sales this summer, 50m last summer, just shows what excellent recruitment can bring and why it’s not impossible for clubs to compete in the PL. Potter has been an outstanding appointment too. They’ve got around another 5/6 players who could easily go for 30m+ (Dunk, Webster, Caicedo, Trossard, MacAllister).

But we did compete for six seasons and even got into Europe.
It's as though Brighton are achieving something better than us.

It's a hell of a lot of money. Looks a decent enough player but difficult to justify that sort of money. Chelsea have something like six left backs now or something daft.
On Brighton - some of the most plastic, entitled fans I've met. Gobby lot considering they've won sod all and have only just stopped watching their team while sat on top of portakabins.
But there's potential for Albion to be massive. Enormous, affluent catchment area; a lot of tourists; billionaire owner.

Very much an established Premier League club now. With their current model and manager it’s highly unlikely they will go down. Plus they play very attractive football.

But not every team above us in the league can become established though and stay up, unless every club that comes up goes straight back down for the next few seasons.

Its not though. Nobody on here doesn't give Dyche and Burnley all the credit deserved for getting us in to Europe. Its just that for the last 5 years or so you have refused to give any credit to any other teams or managers when they have been successful and instead have used some weird whataboutery logic to downplay anyone else's achievements.
Brighton are a prime example of this and even now you seem unable to admit since Potter took charge Brighton and Potter have got a lot of things right and done brilliantly just like Dyche did at Burnley

But surely the benchmark for any of those other clubs is to get into Europe to be considered as successful as us.

No its not. Thats you just picking something we did well to deflect from other teams success exactly as I stated in my last thread.
If a team gets into Europe and qualifies for the Europa League stages does that mean Dyche wasnt as successful because he didnt make it past the qualifiers. No of course it doesn't change anything but thats the kind of dumb logic you are using in the other direction.
Personally I think the real achievement as a manager is to take a club from the lower leagues into the Premier League and keep theme there the first season like Wilder and Howe did. Dyche couldn't even keep Burnley up first time round and he'd inherited an established Championship team so I think his success is overplayed myself. wouldn't you agree?

Am I right in thinking that on one thread you have stated that the only thing that matters to fans is winning trophies? (or very similar).
So unless a club wins that specific European competition there's no point in getting into it.

No. I said fans don't care how they win trophies. That's all.
Can I ask why you support Burnley?

Burnley is my chosen club.
Has been for 60 years (not saying that matters particularly).
I have no trouble taking the rough times, and we have had some. I enjoy watching football, winning is a bonus not an essential.

There's a handful of clubs that are established.
The rest make up and the numbers.
At somepoint Brighton will go back down, it might take a few years, but it's going to happen, maybe when Potter jumps ship
They play attractive football thanks in part to not having to manage their finances particularly well.

To be honest, had he joined us he’d have been behind Pieters in the pecking order, had to get Dyche fit and “earn the right”……he’d likely be making his home debut today.

Or going to Chelsea for the £15m we paid for him after they met his release clause. Or off somewhere round Europe on a free loan.

I’m no expert but I think Chelsea (not for the first time) have had their pants pulled down. When I saw him play on the telly he seemed to run around a lot, often these curvy sort of runs, but usually to no great purpose. He does have a terrific head of hair though, so maybe that’s what Chelsea are paying for. I predict he’ll be a big flop.

Depends whether he’d have helped keep us up, in which case likely no release clause would apply.
Imagine had Brighton gone down there’d have been a clause to activate.

The difference between Brighton and Burnley in the Prime Dyche era was not the fact that their chairman had shed loads of money and ours wasn't prepared to spend, i think it was the fact that Dyche wasn't prepared to trade when an offer came in for our players as demonstrated with Tarks.
I am of the opinion that Garlick sold out because Dyche became intansigent.

Was more than just linked with him. He was at gawthorpe with his agent having a tour. Led to believe he even had a shirt in his hand at one point. He ultimately chose to go with Brighton and their better play style over us.

He would have started on the bench for sure, made a few appearances on the left-wing as a sub and played at LB when Taylor got injured.
He would have been sold this summer for little more than what we paid for him - or loaned back to Spain.
Hopefully in the future our 'style of football' won't be a deterrent to signing such players but our chairman needs to also work out how to maximise value from the talent we do sign/develop.

They do seem to be getting it right now but it took quite a bit of trial and error and a lot of money lost on signings like that Iranian striker. Fortunately for them they had an owner who was willing to subsidise them with hundreds of millions whilst they were losing £50m+ year but obviously that model doesn't work for most. If they keep selling these players for £50m+ they may even turn a profit one year.
