Team for Wigan

Post by BleedingClaret » Fri Aug 26, 2022 2:03 pm

I’d play a back four
With just 1 holding midfielder and proper wing backs

But based on the system we’re trying to play
then I’d go
………………….. Muric…………………….
Lowton …….. .THB …………. Taylor
……………Cork……….Cullen…….…….
……….Bastien…… ..Brownhill………
Churlinov…………………………...Tella
…………………..Jay Rod………………….

I’d like to see off the bench cameos from
JBG - probably has 30 minutes in him
Benson - physically lightweight but fast when others are tiring
Roberts and Lowton could have a flat out 45 each if it’s box to box
Twine - when fit

Rugby match at the ground tonight. Pitch might not be in the best condition.

Good job that we’re not a passing team

Assuming Vitinho is playing LB tomorrow - would be weird to try him there in the cup if he isn't - then seems a toss-up between Benson and Churlinov to start wide right. Might as well have a look at Churlinov as Benson hasn't done a lot yet. Rest same as Blackpool, but defend properly please.

Like him but liked Tella more in that inside left role last week.

I'd drop Vitinho and play Taylor left back and Egan-Riley or McNally CB

Or Bastien for Churlinov?

A pity we seem to be overlooking Lowton as an alternative, as I think he still can be very useful to us

How about a starting eleven containing neither Barnes or Rodriguez?

You saw it here first.

Agree with this -but we know we won’t play that way at present
I said in the opening post I’d play a back four and that would be McNally with TBH and then allow the full backs Taylor at present on the left to push up

But we seem to be playing a slightly strange back 3 or 4 with two left backs 1 that virtually plays left wing the other that plays left CB whereas on the right we just play a RB

So you’d think especially with Mattsen’s suspension that we’d play 2 CB’s and Taylor as a proper LB come wing back

It seemed to be what cost us against Blackpool, they seemed to target that and Mattsen got dragged back but reluctantly and was half a yard behind the pace and Taylor was dragged about and we didn’t stop or defend the balls in from our left

At the moment there is a definite case, more than normal, for stating the team you’d play and the team you think we’ll play because not only is it against the grain to us as Burnley fans with a decade of 442 and solid players but it’s a little odd and unbalanced as it is

Rodriguez looks good in this system
So no
Unless Twine proves capable of playing this role or we sign the new Danny Ings then Rodriguez starts for me
Even then he’d possibly be our best 10, if Twine isn’t ready, but he’s our only capable 9 at present

Muric
Roberts THB Egan Riley Taylor
Brownhill Cork Cullen Bastien
Tella Rodriguez

This midfield seems fine to me away from home. Its not got loads of flair but its got lots of legs, pace and can pick a pass.

The debate will be Taylor at centre back or left back. For me it's an experiment that hasn't worked especially well and Taylor is at least the second best left back at the club. He should play there.

Jay has been excellent in the last couple and should basically be the first name on the team sheet

What I'd select.

Muric
Lowton THB Egan-Riley Taylor
Cork Cullen
Brownhill Bastien Tella
Jay Rod

Lowton and Taylor in their natural roles would hopefully make us more secure at the back, plus add much needed experience in helping us close out the game if we go ahead, well Brownhill, Jay and Tella offer a goal threat judging by their recent outings.

What I think VK will opt for.

Muric
Roberts THB Taylor Vitinho
Cork Cullen
Churlinov Brownhill Tella
Jay Rod
