Squad size

Are we limited to 25 squad players with a minimum of 8 homegrown? I think you can have as many players under 20 or 21 on Jan1st 2022 but not sure if that applies to the overseas players we have signed. Anyone know the facts on this and how it might impact on the 14 players we have brought in?
I can count 28 players who may have to be in the 25 with the likes of Richardson, Costelloe, Helm, Dodgson, Tucker, McGlynn who do not have to be in the squad of 25?

Clubs in the Championship shall be permitted to name up to a maximum of 25 Players, of which a minimum of 8 must be a Home Grown Player.

Under 21 players (other than those who are on loan at the Club) do not need to be named on the Squad List to be eligible to participate in a League Match.

A "Home-Grown Player" means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).


These are the players that have been involved with the first team so far this season.

Since the U21s don't have to be counted the above would be 24 registered players. Phillips set to leave drops us to 23, so we have space for 2 more over 21s. We have no concerns meeting the homegrown quota.

Thanks for that. Means if we sign two more over 21 the likes of Norris, Long cannot be involved. As Thomas wasn't 21 on January 1st 2022 doesn't he count as an under 21? If so we have three slots if Phillips moves on.

Forgot about Long and Westwood. So we'd be on 26 currently. 25 once Phillips leaves. So we'll probably be looking to loan Thomas out and move at least one more on (or just not register Long, for example)

To count as U21 on squad lists I believe they would have to be born on or after 1st January 2001, which rules out Thomas and Zaroury.

I thought you could update your squad at each transfer window, not 100% certain though, and yes it's unlikely Westwood will see meaningful action until next year, even if he gets himself fit he'll need a fair number of run-out's to get anywhere near match speed I'd suspect.

You don't have Muric as homegrown but he's been at City since 2015. Costelloe is not homegrown, not been in England long enough.

Loan players count as part of the 25 regardless of age and I don't think it's just outfield players that count, so I think the signing of Dervişoğlu has taken us to the limit now. So presumably Philips/Norris will leave or won't be registered

I've misread it - doesn't include goalkeepers for Leagues One & Two but does for the Championship.

I count 26 players on loan or over 21 and 7 under 21 this January. So one of Long Norris Westy will have to sit things out until January if I have understood all this.
