McNally?

I have asked a couple of time so apologies if it has already been answered.

Does anybody have anything concrete on what has happened with the lad?

Injured/unfit/out of favour?

Not seen him mentioned at all since he came on (up front?) as sub. Has he been playing for the Under 21's

Just seems really strange as I thought he would have stepped pretty much straight in alongside HB. It now appears they are fetching other central defenders in so a starting berth appears even more distant.

Anyone got any info?

Just a league one player that has taken the step up and will take some time to develop.

I’d imagine both him and Egan-Riley are part of the medium term project. THB and Meyer loans to try and give us the immediate quality to push for promotion this season.

Some of the players we sign will sink, some will swim and others will need time.

McNally has had a sharp rise from Ireland to League One and now to a promotion chasing Championship side. I think Kompany is being fair with him and is not risking chucking him under the bus, he'll introduce him when he's ready, rather than it being the case that he's not good enough.

Just look at the grief Muric got after Blackpool from one mistake that wasn't wholly his fault.

It’s a massive step up from league one to championship.

I suspect Kompany is just taking his time with him.

He hasn't played for the U-21s as far as I know.

Thing is, like Twine, he was supposed to be one of if not the best in his position in the division.

Appreciate he is not up to the first team yet, but he needs regular game time either in the U21's or out on loan

Long term replacement for THB if we can't sign him next for season.

Possibly!

Only seen the pre season clips where Kompany appeared to be pulling McNally on one side about his positioning and body shape when defending.

I have absolutely zero idea about why he's not been involved and was very surprised he didn't play against Shrewsbury but can only think the coaches are making sure he is ready before getting him involved, Oxford fans spoke highly of him and the attributes they reeled off seem to be perfect for what we need.

If any of the press read this board then maybe they can ask VK at the next press conference about how he's settled in etc.

Here is the video from the official site

2m 30secs in and then again at 3m 20secs

VK may have pulled plenty of players that day but this is the one that was filmed and shown and it's stuck with me. Some people in life are confident and cocky, if he's not like that then it may take him a little while to believe he belongs in this company, it's natural.

Apparently we have a couple of clauses in for our on loan defenders that mean they need to play a certain amount of games.

That's always going to hamper his chances, also I think he's only had 1 season in English football and that's at league 1 level.
He jumped there from Irish football which is barely full time.
All things considered, it's asking a hell of a lot from a young lad to come into a promotion chasing championship team from his footballing career so far.

However I don't think he can get a better mentor than Vinny, and I'm sure his time will come, he certainly seems yo have the attributes required for this level ( maybe even higher )

I agree and the clause stipulation which seems to be a major thing with a lot of the loan players could be the reason why THB came on for the final three minutes, get those games topped up early doors!!!

Odd strategy to sign young players to develop then sell but completely block their progress with loan signings. Mcnally should be going out on loan imo, sitting on his arse with 0 gametime does his development no good.

We have absolutely no idea why he's not playing.

From L1 training to basically PL quality coaching is some leap.
Interesting that Twine and McNally seem to have struggled a bit so far, could it be fitness levels?

Weirdly It did occur to me at the time that McNally looked a little overawed in the videos, although I get it’s easy to make that kind of observation in hindsight.

He has quickly moved from league of Ireland to a team that have just been relegated from the premier league though. Although it has a different look from last year and less ‘established’ premier league players, even the young lads who have come in have come from the continent and/or man city… so maybe he’s just not used to the rigors and the detail in the training methods he’ll be experiencing now. He might just be lacking that confidence…. and VK may recognize that and be managing it.

Either way, Oxford fans rave about him, people I know who have some decent knowledge of league one rave about him… and hopefully he’ll turn out to be a great signing for us.

Meanwhile I’m just pleased we seem to have struck gold, at least temporarily, with THB. Not sure how we manage it but our record with centre halves has been consistently good over the last decade.

Twine is a lad that I think might take a little while to adjust to this level.

Physically it is a big jump.

Twine is injured difficult to judge his ability to adjust at present … he has suffered the type of injury that players get at any level from non-league step 7 to the very top
of the game
